Adam Ramsdell saw something long and black rolled in on the swells, a long parcel of...plastic? It disappeared under the first line of breakers, then appeared again, battered by an insistent ocean. As the bundle moved, it undulated; probably a tangle of plastic ripped from the massive raft that polluted the Pacific. If he didn't handle this, a seabird would ingest it and die, a fish would nibble at it and turn into a stinking corpse on the beach, a curious child would find it and... He shuddered. At one time, it had been his job to figure out every possible consequence for any given situation, and he knew only too well what could happen in this worst case scenario. He made his way off the rocks, down to the sand. The ocean rocked the black plastic back and forth, back and forth, pulling the parcel back out into the deep, then shoving it farther onto shore to the spot where the foam gathered and the waves grew shallow. As he walked, a wave rolled the bundle lengthwise—and a feminine arm flopped out. He broke into a run. He splashed into the water, grabbed the arm—it was icy—and the plastic—it was a long rain poncho—and dragged the corpse all the way onto the sand. Because it had to be a corpse, didn't it? Yet in the quest for life, he flipped the body out of the poncho and onto her back. With the sun on her icy, colorless face, his feeble, unrecognized hope faded and he knew the truth—she was dead. He unwrapped her neck to press his fingers to the carotid artery, when he saw them—the marks of a man's fingers ringing her throat. She'd been dead before she went in the water. A young woman. A pretty woman. A violent crime... Adam knew he would feel no heartbeat. And he did not. But he couldn't leave her down here for the seabirds to feed on and the ocean to retrieve. He had to get the body up to the road, onto his ATV and up to the village. From there, he could call the authorities and— He looked up the cliff toward the road. What a helluva climb. Yet he wasn't a man to shirk his duty. Bending at the knees, he grasped the body around the waist, threw it over his shoulder and stood. The woman explosively emptied her stomach down his back, gave a gasp, another, another, and when he flipped her back onto the sand, she opened her eyes, looked at him—and screamed. She screamed as if all the screams in the world had been pent up inside her, as if she had given terror and horror a voice. He jumped back and held up his hands in a "not going to touch you" gesture. She rolled over onto her hands and knees, coughed up more seawater, took a long breath as if preparing to scream again...and slowly let it out. She turned her head. The braid of her dark drenched hair hung over her shoulder. Just out of reach, he knelt on the sand. "Can you speak?" She stared as if she didn't understand. Maybe she didn't. Maybe she spoke another language. Maybe she'd suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen. Maybe— "Yes," she said. "I can speak." She was hoarse. She put a hand up to her throat and held it there. "What's your name?" Keeping his voice pitched low, trying hard to present an unthreatening appearance, he asked again, "What's your name?" Slowly, moving with the care of someone battered and bruised, she changed positions. She sat on the sand and concentrated at him, her hand still on her throat. Again he asked, "What's your—" "I don't know." Her gray eyes were wide with confusion and terror. He sat back on his heels. Adam Ramsdell had found his first lost soul.POINT LAST SEEN by New York Times bestseller Christina Dodd --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. Wow! What a roller coaster ride!

Gothic is a strange little town with a few strange (but interesting) citizens. But then what do you expect from a town with a ghostly legend about bringing “lost souls back from the dead”? The cast of characters include Angelica, who actually owns the town; Rune, the local psychic; Clarice, a visiting actress who is working on an upcoming role; Adam, a metal working artist who mostly wants to keep to himself; and Elle, who washes up on the beach. Dead. Well, dead until Adam tosses her over his shoulder to get her body up to his truck. Then she isn’t dead, but she doesn’t remember anything, except that her first name is Elle.

I must admit I am one reader who will jump to the last pages if a book starts to lose my interest. Not once was I tempted to jump ahead. While I did figure out a couple of points, there were so many plot twists I never even suspected. And that’s all I’ll say about that, because I don’t want to give any of it away. I can say if you like good mysteries, you will enjoy Point Last Seen.

Good thriller

Adam is walking on the beach and finds what he thinks is a dead body, but it turns out she is not dead. Due to almost dying Ella has lost her memory and she and Adam must figure out who almost killed her before it's too late. Loved all the characters in Gothic and really enjoyed the storylines. I look forward to reading more books by Christina Dodd.

Point Last Seen

Pretty good read. The outcome was somewhat predictable. I like reading this author’s books, but like a lot of books by other authors, the price is too high. I cannot afford a lot of the books that I would like to read.

Christina Dodd at her best.

A very typical plot, man finds woman who has lost her memory. However, knowledge of metal working, fortune telling, and interesting persons in a quirky town lead to several mysteries.

Slow Build Good finish

An arc was provided in exchange for an honest and unbiased review

I am a huge fan of Dodds's work, but I have to say that this novel was very hard to get into. It took a really long tie to build the characters and the story. I understand that is the case whenever there is a new series starting. I understand that the build-up will pay off in later novels and it finally did pay off in this novel, but it was really hard to get there.

If you want to truly enjoy this novel, you have to be prepared to invest in characters who start off as not being very likable. I know it's hard to accept as usually Dodds characters, although flawed, although real, it is usually easy to see their good graces under it all. In this case not so easy.

Ultimately it paid off. with a somewhat rewarding ending that tied up some of the ends that were dangled throughout the novel.

The covid reference was unnecessary, will hit too close to home for some, and will serve as a reminder of the pandemic for later readers. It hit too close to home for me.

The first 300 pages were a slow build-up to the amazing last 137 pages. Some things seemed kind of rushed and without a real explanation. I'm sure those will come back in later novels.

I look forward to the next novel in this series where hopefully my investment in this novel will continue to pay off.

Not my speed

Unlike Christina Dodd's previous works, I simply forced myself to finish the book. I enjoyed the idea behind the book, but I couldn't connect with several of the characters. Rune was too flamboyant for my taste. And I was confused as to which character was the focus when there were inconsistencies with the he/she back and forth during conversations. As a whole I like Adam and Elle's characters, but the flash romance was too much too fast considering the seriousness of Elle's situation. I didn't care for Adam and Elle's attackers showing up at the same time and everything coming to a head on the same day.
This book just wasn't for me, but I look forward to Mrs. Dodd's next work.

Dark, Setting Driven Suspense

This book has a wild plot that is somewhat unbelievable, wild characters that range from the heroine whose life is in danger to the reclusive hero and even to a perhaps trans psychic, and a really wild setting that is not helped by the out-of-control weather on the Pacific Coast. All of that being said, the book is a 3.5 for me, with the believability factor rating it down and the quirkiness of the setting being enticing. It is a dark novel with crime and violence lurking under the surface and a lot of hints about more to come. The village of Gothic makes the story since it is a one of a kind type of place where the castaways of life seem to have gathered, started a new life there and support each other. Adam Ramsdell is a sculptor of sorts (large, metal and not displayed in galleries) who is hiding from his disturbing past. Elle is running from her past but she doesn’t know why because when Adam finds her on the beach, she is half-drowned, suffering from hypothermia and has amnesia. All of this boggled my mind and stretched the bounds of realism, but it did contribute to the story. I enjoyed the story itself but not all of the constant drama. I especially enjoyed the developing relationship between Adam and Elle and how they learn to trust and depend on each other. Sex is a part of the story and it is rated a hard PG with some rather vivid descriptions that I tended to skim over rapidly since I did not think they added to the story itself. The entire book requires an active imagination but did not require me to remember all of the nitty little details about Adam and Elle’s past lives since these details were revealed slowly and methodically, in a definite teasing manner. I did not like the character of Rune, perhaps a trans, but not well portrayed, a psychiatrist who is now a psychic. That was over the top for me and just put there to appease the current trends. Rune’s advice and insight could have very well been given by her in her role as a psychiatrist; the psychic thing was not necessary and did not add to the development of the plot nor the entertainment value of the story, in my opinion. All in all, those who enjoy quirky thrillers will enjoy their trip to Gothic, but the emphasis is definitely on strange.

Welcome to Gothic, CA!

Gothic, CA is a small town that keeps alive based on a legend regarding lost souls returning from the dead. The town is gearing up for The Gothic Spring Psychic Festival, which draws in tourists and helps keep the town alive.

Adam Ramsdell settled in Gothic to find some peace from a scandal, and to work on pieces of metal that the ocean churns up onto the shore. Adam keeps to himself and is haunted by his past, a past that keeps him vigilant even in an out-of-the-way town such as Gothic.

Madame Rune, Gothic's psychic, pays an unexpected visit to Adam and convinces him to participate in a jousting reenactment. Before Adam can leave, Rune imparts to Adam that a lost soul is coming to challenge him.

Adam doesn't believe in superstitious nonsense, but is surprised to find himself heading towards the ocean rather than home. As he contemplates wading out into the ocean, he catches sight of something washed ashore and he approaches the black plastic to find a body. Feeling no pulse, he prepares to carry the body up a cliff where he can get cell service. Soon as he tosses the body over his shoulder, Rune's prediction comes true.

The lost soul of Elle comes back to life. Elle has no memory of what happened or who she is beyond the name, Elle, but it's obvious from the bruises that someone meant to do her bodily harm. Elle is absolutely terrified and refuses medical aid because she fears it will lead a killer right to her.

The elusive Adam sets all the town's tongues wagging when word gets out about a woman being seen with Adam, more so when her screams are heard!

Rune is recommended to Adam to help Elle try to recover some of her memories. Who knew Rune had a professional side? One session finds the three of them taking cover for their lives. The question is, who was the intended target?

I was thoroughly entertained by this story! I was kept wondering about Adam's past and loved how easily Elle made friends with all the town's citizens and won over Adam. There are many interesting side characters, but my favorite is Rune, who is a little eccentric but whose flair takes center stage. I missed a few red herrings, that were at a reveal towards the end, became an a-ha moment thinking back. I look forward to reading more about the people of Gothic!

I received a complimentary copy and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ is a bit generous

The book started incredible, then got a little odd… but I kept on reading. The ending felt like the author had to wrap the story up and was late getting this to the editor, it was rushed and too much in too few pages.
