About the Author Douglas C. Giancoli obtained his BA in physics (summa cum laude) from UC Berkeley, his MS in physics at MIT, and his PhD in elementary particle physics back at the UC Berkeley. He spent 2 years as a post-doctoral fellow at UC Berkeley’s Virus lab developing skills in molecular biology and biophysics. His mentors include Nobel winners Emilio Segrè and Donald Glaser. He has taught a wide range of undergraduate courses, traditional as well as innovative ones, and continues to update his textbooks meticulously, seeking ways to better provide an understanding of physics for students. Doug’s favorite spare-time activity is the outdoors, especially climbing peaks. He says climbing peaks is like learning physics: it takes effort and the rewards are great.

below average book
I used this book for two semesters of physics; I didn't like it. I found the explanations lacking and non-intuitive, and not many tips how to solve problems, but also the equations are not listed clearly. I found my self going on youtube and reading knight-jones-field college physics book as a supplement just to figure out what the book was trying to say.
To give an example of why I didn't like this book: In chapter 22 under Energy in EM waves, the author makes zero attempt to help you understand notation. I had no clue what a rms value was. Only after looking online did I find out that if you use the rms values
the S ----> S(avg).

Buy a different book if you're learning physics for the first time
I used this book for two semesters - both for physics I and physics II, so I feel like I am qualified to write a review for it. If you're like me and are learning physics for the first time for real (I don't count middle school or regular high school classes as really learning it), then you are going to want a different book. This book would probably be great for someone who is already well-versed in physics and is learning to brush up - it is NOT good if you are trying to teach yourself (aka if you have bad professors so you really depend on the book to learn the info). The terminology can be very confusing with extrapolations of formulas that are irrelevant. And, many of the pictures/diagrams are not intuitive and are actually quite confusing sometimes. I bought the book because it was the required textbook for my courses and I didn't know any better. I am sure there are far superior books out there, which I would have rather have purchased.

Horrible Book Overall
I am beginner in physics and my professor made me buy this book. The reading is actually not that bad, but the examples for the problems and the explanations ARE NOT FOR BEGINNERS.
Not only that but what really bothers me is how messed up the answers in the back of the book are.
For example: the answer for a problem will be 134.67 and the book randomly rounds it off to 130. Or it will be 137 and the book rounds it off to 140.
This is extremely annoying for me. Ive done the HW for two chapters so far and at least half the answers in the back are done like this.
Whoever did the answers section in the back should never do it like this again, please I BEG YOU.

Decent book.
No problems with the seller, the book came in good condition. The book itself was a decent read, with a few clear examples and a few not so clear examples. Ch. 16 on electricity was not very well written. The diagrams was a little difficult to follow, and my professor taught the chapter in a completely different than from the book.

Normal Textbook
Needed it for my physics I & II classes. Seems like a decent enough textbook so far. Lots of good explanations and examples as well as practice problems.

Book itself maybe great
The book itself maybe great. The problem lies with answers. Now, this book actually helps you understand what physics is. BUT, this book does not teach you how to apply them. Giving off answers to the exercises and problems do not help students to apply physics.
Since, I like to learn how to apply them, I bought the separate Study Guide and Solutions (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321762401/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_10) for this book. This guide is a PIECE OF CRAP. Clearly, the AUTHOR (I do respect him for writing a good book) wants money out of students pocket. How to learn physics with a book that give you couple of problem's solution guide in one chapter. I'm serious. The study guide guides you maximum of 10 questions. He should've given at least 20~30 problems in the solution book to help students out. But he didn't. If you are studying with this book at school, you should really asking your professors a lot of question to actually learn how to APPLY physics.

This is one of the worst textbooks for physics
This is one of the worst textbooks for physics. It does not explain anything well, especially if you are not good at physics already like myself.

NOT CLEAR ENOUGH!! TERRIBLE!!!!
Even though I did not buy the book, I am enrolled in an AP Physics online class and this book is not helping me AT ALL to understand the concepts. It gives you all these formulas and does not explain what you need them for, everything is just thrown at you and you are expected to know it without any rigorous explanation. And then at the end of every chapter there is all these problems that are technically impossible to find with the little information the book gives you. Physics is my favorite subject, I was so excited to take this course, but, honestly, this book is just making my life miserable, I wish I had dropped the class when I could. Yes, that's how bad the textbook is.

Good book for a good price
I am renting this book for the semester for my online physics class. I received this book about a month ago and it has been helpful so far for this course. I mainly use it just for the homework questions rather than to teach myself physics because my online physics professor posts lecture videos online that I use to learn the material.
After ordering it, I received this book within 2 days in fairly good condition. It has some minor dents and scratches but that is expected since it is used. There is some occasional highlighting within the text throughout the book but nothing too extreme. I am very pleased with the condition it came in.
In comparison to other websites and books, the cost on Amazon was the most reasonable and affordable to rent at $40.
If you are thinking of using this book to teach yourself physics, I would consider finding a simpler edition. When I tried to use the text to help me on my test, I found it confusing and not very helpful.
I gave this product 4 out of 5 stars because while I do find it helpful in the context of using it solely for the homework problems, it may not be helpful for someone looking to teach themselves physics right out of the book.
Overall, my experience with this product has been good.
