Pierogi!!

We love pierogi at our house, but I have never tried to make them from scratch before. Tonight, my daughter and I made the beef and onion filling with the traditional dough and the breadcrumb topping. They were fantastic! The batch made more than we could all eat, so we have a lot of leftovers! I was surprised at how easy the whole process was we didn't get a pierogi maker and didn't have a 3" round cookie cutter, so we just used a glass and sealed them by hand. It was a lot of fun and worth every bit of effort we put into it. We can't wait to make another recipe from this book!

I was looking for a pierogi recipe that my great aunt used to make - and I had lost what she had written in one of my moves... My fiance found this e-book for me and it read easily and the techniques are reminiscent of my great aunt as well as the fillings. This e-book impressed me so much that I had to buy the physical copy for actual kitchen use! Ms Wysocki wrote the instructions in a very clear manner. If you follow her directions, you willhave delicious pierogi. While I am happy for the moment trying the traditional fillings and dough, I will indeed try Rose's inventions as well! Thank you for helping me find a comfort from the past! I hope the author would consider writing another book to include the Polish donuts and other dishes!

Another aspect was describing the delicious little pockets and giving us a little historical background! For a first cookbook, Rose Wysocki did a very nice job!

Amateur effort

Amateur effort with giant print to cover up lack of content, poor organization and bad editing. In addition, there are surprisingly few recipes for fillings, and many are weird, non-traditional recipes. I don't believe that jalapenos are a common Slavic ingredient. Several of the sweet berry filling recipes are virtually identical and could be shown as one recipe with a note that other types of berries or fruit may be substituted. There are strange appearances of cheddar cheese, which is not a traditional Polish ingredient. Not a single recipe for any of my family favorites - potato, onion and sauerkaut (no cheese); dry curd cottage cheese or pot cheese with sugar, cinnamon and raisins; or ground beef (or veal or pork), dill, onion and potato. These are common recipes, as I have had them at other meals, both at friends' houses and restaurants. Finally, with print so large, it takes several pages of excruciatingly repetitive instructions to get through one recipe, which is irritating and inconvenient. I am very disappointed.

Delicious Pierogi!

We used to enjoy delicious pierogi while living in the northeast, but after moving away, we were unable to locate anything of similar quality. I purchased this book for my husband for Christmas, and we decided to have a pierogi party while family was in town to help and enjoy! We started w the traditional dough recipe and made kielbasa as well as potato bacon fillings. Then we improvised a Buffalo filling that had been popular in our old neighborhood. With the remaining dough, we tried out a dessert recipe that we ended up enjoying for breakfast as we were so stuffed from dinner. It was a delightful evening of both making and eating pierogi (with many more leftover in the freezer!), and we all agreed the pierogi party needed to become an annual Christmas tradition. Many thanks to Rose for putting this marvelous recipe book together - it is a delight, and we can’t wait to try out even more recipes!

Pierogi: from infinity to beyond

This was an interesting cookbook. It built upon several alternative dough recipes, from traditional and regional variations to some newer approaches. Similarly so with a nice variety of fillings, traditional potato and mushroom versions to more modern Polish-American variations. Well written, clearly described recipe ingredients and measurement/cooking instructions. The bonus is a lot of background cultural information about Polish as well as Slavic cuisine in general. The definitive pierogi cookbook.

read the product description

I bought this book after "taking a look inside" and looking at some of the reviews. As it turns out, there are no photographs in this booklet (pamphlet?).

The recipes reminded me of my mother's pierogi - both dough and filling. They sounded authentic and while the book is advertised as 196 pages, I presumed there would be more kinds of authentic / tradition pierogi filling that I see in the cooking magazines.

As it turns out, this book is published with an extremely large font, 20 pt or so, and many recipes continue on to the next page just to end with simple sentences, "Proceed with the remaining dough and filling...", leaving the rest of the page blank.

Although the price of the book is affordable, if the publisher decided to cut corners by using a smaller font-size, they would have saved many pages and likewise reduced the publication costs of this book.

If you just want plain and basic pierogis, maybe this book is for you. Again, my gripe is with the publisher and not the author.

As it turns out, the product description is very misleading this go-round. 196 pages of pierogi recipes? Not so fast.

Missing Something?

Page 75 has directions about adding milk, and milk isn't in the list of ingredients. Otherwise, and effort with which I wasn't impressed. Should be revised or proof read.

A Book to Entice Memories and Taste Buds

The author has put a great deal of research into the history and making of pierogies. I have tried several of the recipes and have enjoyed the results each time. Some of the recipes remind me of my grandmother's pierogies; some remind me of my mother-in-law's. Since both are now deceased, I am so happy to be able to share these dishes with family. This is a great book to give as a gift to friends or family just beginning a home or to those finally finding time to make favorite dishes from scratch. The large, clear print in the book is easy to read and the steps are clear and concise.

Missing page

I have to say that it is a good recipe book, but there are pages missing, which is Pierogi Filling Recipes. Where are they???? The author needs to revise and re-edit the book for proofreading.
