Description

From School Library Journal PreS-K—This instructional book about biting goes above and beyond a basic lesson with its cheeky rhymes and bright, over-the-top illustrations. Wheeler writes in precise rhythmic rhyming verse, informing readers what things are good and bad to bite, in a style reminiscent of Jane Yolen's "Dinosaurs" series. The refrain features the titular "People don't bite people" and always ends with "biting is for food." The suggestions appeal to common sense, reminding children that they are not wild animals, and giving the characters the opportunity to right their behavior, by politely chewing a piece of pizza rather than gnawing on their mother, for example. Caldecott honoree Idle's wide-eyed, retro children jump off the page with ultra bright pastels done in Prismacolor pencils and expressions as sweet as the foods that adorn the cover page. Adults and children alike will appreciate the humor in both the text and illustrations, an element which is often missing in didactic works, from the up-close views of teeth and tongues on the endpapers, to the twist ending featuring gingerbread people (the one exception to the title's rule). VERDICT This book is sure to elicit giggles from group read-alouds or one-on-one sharing. Add to any collection in need of a wildly entertaining title that addresses a common childhood issue.—Clara Hendricks, Cambridge Public Library, MA "In People Don't Bite People ...that Class-A preschool felony is faced head-on with the snappy verve of a 1950s tooth-paste jingle: "It's good to bite a carrot. It's good to bite a steak. It's bad to bite your sister! She's not a piece of cake." The drawings are bright and no-nonsense, quickly removing, like ripping off a Band-Aid, the stigma of biting. The message is outlined and repeated in tick-tack-toe squares with plenty of illustrations and humor, straight-forward, with a hint of Mary Poppins's intolerance for nonsense." ― The New York Times Book Review * "In a combination of listicle, admonishment, and pep talk, the well-matched Wheeler ( Babies Can Sleep Anywhere ) and Idle (the Flora books) remind children that they are too long in the tooth, so to speak, to be chomping on others.... Wheeler’s four-line stanzas deploy repetition and rhythm for maximum percussive punch.... Idle’s pert, radiant pictures alternate between neatly divided worksheet-style grids (which correspond to the bitable and nonbitable items and people mentioned in the verse) and blithe vignettes.... The aesthetic is reminiscent of 1960s educational films, with every character exuding comic, pedagogical earnestness. Whether readers are biters, bite-ees, or witnesses to a biting incident, they’ll find this a toothsome treat." ― Publishers Weekly, February 2018, *STARRED REVIEW* *"Paired with a neatly drawn cast of doll-like animals and human figures in Caldecott Honoree Idle’s spacious, harmoniously hued illustrations, Wheeler’s infectiously exclamatory rhymes present her anti-biting message with lighthearted but compelling persistence . . .xa0A chewy theme for children with biting issues, and a rollicking readaloud for all." ― Booklist, *STARRED REVIEW* "Subversively lilting rhymed verse. . . The humorous text is all fun and games (the refrain: 'Biting is for food!'), but the underlying message about anger management is useful and age appropriate. Idle’s dynamic colored-pencil illustrations use many of her familiar poses from her Flora books . . . Simple rounded shapes in saturated hues, surrounded by dimension-giving, drop shadow outlines, keep the pictures clean, lighthearted, and easy to follow. A sweet conclusion that smartly anticipates preschooler logic provides an exception to the no-biting rule." -- The Horn Book"A rollicking reminder of what to do—and not do—with your pearly whites. The commandments rhyme and scan terrifically right out of the gate.... Refrains reiterate that "BITING IS FOR FOOD!" —once fabulously rhymed with "You're not a zombie, dude!"... Idle's pencil colors are rich and soft...get this [book] to summon instant rereads and loud participation." ― Kirkus Reviews, February 2015 "This instructional book about biting goes above and beyond a basic lesson with its cheeky rhymes and bright, over-the-top illustrations. Wheeler writes in precise rhythmic rhyming verse.... Caldecott honoree Idle’s wide-eyed, retro children jump off the page.... Adults and children alike will appreciate the humor in both the text and illustrations.... This book is sure to elicit giggles from group read-alouds or one-on-one sharing. Add to any collection in need of a wildly entertaining title that addresses a common childhood issue." ― School Library Journal, March 2018 Lisa Wheeler has written many books for children, including The Pet Project , illustrated by Zachariah OHora; Spinster Goose , illustrated by Sophie Blackall; and People Don’t Bite People and People Share with People , both illustrated by Molly Idle. FIVE STARS!

11/10! I seriously wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. It’s catchy, hilarious, and so clever. It’s not too long or too short, and the illustrations are beautiful and so funny! Our 2.5 year old very randomly started biting her best friend when she was frustrated, so I panic ordered this book. She now asks for it by name every night, and sometimes I’ll hear her chanting the “chorus” of the book while playing... “People don’t bite people! Biting is for food.” One happy mama over here. Thank you to the author and artists!

Awesome book to remind kids not to bite

I'm a preschool teacher and it's really hard to find books on biting that are fun and entertaining for 18 to 24 month olds, When I saw this book I thought the title was fun and I was hoping the story would be as well. I am so glad I did because When I read it was definitely funny and entertaining, I know the kind of books my students are into and this one they are going to love. I am actually taking it to work tomorrow, I will update on how it goes. But from the writing it is a cute book for any child.

Probably best for kids 3+

Cute book, fun rhyming. But it’s been a little tricky for my 20 month old, my youngest. Probably better for kids 3+ or younger kids if they have even younger siblings because of the reference to “babies bite”. My kiddo still thinks she’s the baby so kind of counter productive. Also, at home we’ve made the word “bite” kind of a bad word and this is more nuanced talking about biting food vs biting people and is harder for my little one to differentiate. My almost 5 year thinks this book is hilarious though and loves it.

Really helped my grandson to not bite people!

I really like this book. It has really helped my grandson and he enjoys reading it together. Often asks to read it again. We have other books similar but this on is one he asks to read.

A hilarious book with a great message. As a librarian I have parents coming in asking for a book to help with their child who has a tendency to bite and now I have a great recommendation. The refrain "People Don't bite people, a friend should never bite a friend, biting is for food' lends to a wonderful chant and easy to memorize rule of thumb. The illustrations provide ample opportunity for parents and children to point out what's good to bite and what is not. There also some wonderful little surprises in the artwork- look very carefully at the gingerbread men.

Funny, funny, funny

I laughed out loud when I read this in the bookstore. Then, I read parts of it out loud to my teenage daughter, which she found embarrassing -- my reading, that is, not the awesome book.

Cute book, fun rhymes, helped with biting!

We were having problems with our 16 month old biting her older sister and me (her mom) when she would get mad or frustrated, since she can’t fully talk yet. About a week after we started reading her this book, we noticed the biting was over. She’s 19 months now and she still needs a reminder every now and then because she’ll bite her own arm when she gets frustrated. Then we say “Biting is for ——“ and she’ll say “food” and quit biting herself. The critiques I have about this book are: it’s pretty tall/wide. I didn’t look at the dimensions prior to buying it. Also it has paper pages instead of hard pages, so my little one ripped a page. They’re pretty hard on books at this age so you’d think it would be hard. Overall, glad I bought it and I will pass it along to friends who have biters!

Love the illustrations and rhymes.

I prefer this to Teeth Are Not for Biting, I think it resonates with my toddler a bit more because it focuses on people not biting people (whereas the other book is kind of unclear because it says teeth are not for biting but then says you can bite food).

Works!

My 18 month old was biting 2-3 times a week. We read this book many times during the week and she loves it! When she gets angry she says "People don't bite people" while shaking her finger. That is how I know the message got across to her. 2 mo ths after my purchase and consistent reading and using the phrases in the book and we no longer have a biter!

If you have a biter, get this book!

Fun, rhyming book that is not "lecturing". A quick read and the child will learn the rhymes very quickly.
