Description

Review “Liviero writes a dramatic, heartfelt tale based on a little-known aspect of the Holocaust…An absorbing account of loyalty and love in wartime, freshened by unusual historical events.” ― Kirkus Reviews “Gripping and fresh―A skilfully told, poignantly drawn narrative. Good...but not great

A story based on facts during the Nazi occupation and the "desire" by the Nazis to create a super-race of all blue eyed kids.

You won't want to put it down !!!!

I read some of the other reviews and some said the book was kind of slow at the beginning, etc. I didn't think any of the parts of the book was slow. It kept my interest the whole time and I couldn't hardly put it down until the end. The one complaint I have is the Epilogue at the end of the book. . For a few seconds it had me really confused. I just think the Epilogue was not needed at all. If the author wanted to include that part of her story in the book, to me it should have been told several pages back, not in the Epilogue. Warning: Do not read this book before you go to sleep because you will not be able to go to sleep before you get to the end !!!!!!!!!!! My favorite character in the book next to Henrik was the cafe owner. The author made him so believable I could see him in my head. Don't want to say too much about the story because I'm afraid I'll give too much away. It is basically the story of a young man in Germany whose sister was stolen at a very young age by a Nazi general and his relentless journey to find her and bring her back to their mother.

Narrative bringing out empathy and a greater understanding of what loss means

Gemma Liviero has become one of my favorite historical fiction writers with vivid prose and suspense woven into a story of survival with the power of love to overcome pain and fear.

Disappointment

I'm not sure how this book has gained such great reviews. It was dull. There are many other WWII books that are much better.
