Description

This book brings IFS to life in an exceptionally clear and captivating way. Between the evocative and fun illustrations, the living room metaphor, and the integration with Buddhism, it presents a wonderfully creative vision of the way our parts dance with each other and with us in our minds. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn about the IFS model or about their inner lives. Richard C. Schwartz, Ph.D., Developer of the Internal Family Systems Therapy model. --Author of Internal Family Systems TherapyThis wonderfully illustrated guide is very helpful for lay people and all seeking to understand one's inner life, as well as a help for therapists and their clients. The illustrations touch a universal understanding of each part of our inner world and how it impacts our outer world. The explanations and vignettes that accompany the illustrations allow the reader to easily comprehend the psychology model of parts work as defined by Internal Family Systems(created by Dr. Richard Schwartz). The book allows us to deeply understand, laugh, make personal connections and give us practical tools. I loved it and keep reading it over and over. The only thing that's really helped my C-PTSD

The Inner Family System (IFS) is the only form of therapy that has made any difference for me, and this book does an excellent job of setting out the process and explanation without getting overwhelmingly wordy and academic. My therapist used this in conjunction with EMDR, but you can do IFS alone with great benefits. Highly recommend.

Easy-to-Implement Immediate Benefits

This type of therapeutic approach to having a balanced mind seems a bit ridiculous when you first read about it.
I felt a bit silly "talking" to my parts but having a mental conversation with the aspects of our personality (our "parts") during times of stress, or even when we are contemplating our life choices or making professional decisions really helps clarify and balance the whole thought process.
Techniques are easily implemented into daily cognitive approaches and practice.

Great bias to the feminine in the illustrations borne out in part of the text

I'm still reading this book so I will hold my overall opinion until I finish it. One troubling issue in the first few chapters is the female bias in the book, primarily with the illustrations - 9 of the 10 'parts' in the first 6 out of 7 illustrations are female, ALL the parts are female in the seventh! The first rebellious part is a headbanging guitar playing smoking teenager that's, you guessed it, female.
Then on page 39 is a clear example of misandry - "Multitasker...With the large number of roles that must be filled in today's world, ESPECIALLY BY WOMEN, many people need this part". Really? Does the author forget that 93% of workplace fatalities were of males in 2017, that's not because 'large numbers of roles must be filled especially by women'.
Also on page 39 we are introduced to the multi-tasker that looks a lot like the eight armed goddess Ambika, right down to the bracelets on every wrist, which gives a hint of the Eastern influences in the book.

Best book on Parts Work that I've Found So far! Amazing!

What an absolutely beautiful book. I have several books on the IFS system, but this one is the one I will read and re-read. It is so comprehendable, so clear. I have come away from just reading this book more whole, more free, more connected.
THANK YOU Tom, Lauri, and Sharon!

Parts Work, great introduction

This book was recommended to me after I had expressed interest in the Internal Family System work. It is indeed really worthwhile to read and reread it, because it contains so much information presented in an easily understandable way.
The one quibble I have with this book compared to Jay Earley's Self-therapy is that Holmes keeps repeating that it is difficult and/or impossible to work on your own with this system while Earley obviously takes the position that it is very well possible to do this work on your own or with a buddy, not necessarily with an IFS therapist if the situation isn't too dramatic.
Personally I am not really fond of Sharon Eckstein's drawing style, but the illustrations support the text in a wonderful way nevertheless.
Reading Holmes and Earley both together gave me an even broader introduction to this wonderful parts work. It is my intention to keep studying in this direction.

Great Illustrations!

I have been doing Parts Work for about a year now. This book makes the work easier to understand. The illustrations bring the Parts to life and solidify what I've experienced so far. Parts Work is amazing and has helped me in a way no other type of therapy could.

A Wonderful Book

I am a lay person under a counselor who has practiced what this book teaches for 12 years. I see her for anxiety and depression and have never been disappointed in a session. She told me to buy this book after our second session and although I have to wade thru it's depths I don't regret it. To be truthful it is so deep I am reading over the first and second chapter for the third time underlining what I understand and don't understand so my counselor can answer my questions. If you aren't under a counselor that practices the "Art of Parts" by Tom Holmes this book won't do you any good. You need a counselor who practices this way. I have grown, and healed, and am a much stronger person because of this book and what it addresses from your childhood. I am a born again, spirit filled Christian and still recommend this book there is no witchcraft or "woo woo magic" in it.

psychology has come a long way in the last 40 years.

The premise of the book is sound by my observation and it helps greatly in understanding people around me, and myself. Useful when making "hard decisions".

All the pages fell out

The book's content is good, but the physical book was in terrible shape. It's like the spine was not glued correctly or something- the middle pages all fell out.
