Alys Clare divides her time between Tonbridge, England-in the area where ""Tavern in the Morning"" is set--and her ancient stone cottage in Brittany. The author of two previous Hawkenlye mysteries, ""Fortune Like the Moon"" and ""Ashes of the Elements,"" she has also studied archaeology at the University of Kent at Canterbury. --This text refers to the paperback edition. From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Clare's captivating first in a new medieval series dramatizes the clash between the old pagan ways and Christianity in 11th-century England. In 1087, with the death of William the Conqueror, the common people are in a rebellious mood. Meanwhile, Lassair, a 14-year-old girl from a Fenland village with special gifts, is learning to be a healer. When two young men ask her to use her skills to locate a hidden treasure, she can't refuse. Lassair joins the men on an arduous trek across East Anglia to the coast, where they unearth a 500-year-old solid gold relic. This relic, Lassair realizes, has the power to cause immense harm. Clare ( The Joys of My Life and 11 other Hawkenlye mysteries) brings the people of the period to vivid life with close attention to such matters as food, clothes and religious belief. Engaging characters, like Lassair's obnoxious sister and her storytelling grandmother, enhance a well-crafted plot that builds to a chilling climax. (Sept.) Keeps your attention!

Very well written, fun, interesting. I have already ordered the next book. It is a real pleasure to books about ancient European customs and beliefs, especially as fiction. The characters and situations are easy to understand. But I would love a pronunciation key for the proper nouns...even a short lesson on prefixes and suffixes. Great job!

Slow start but a good read

Enjoyed it very much. Not as good as her Hawkenlye series, but the characters grow on you. Looking forward to reading more Aelf Fen mysteries.

Good book

First in a series that takes place in the 11th century England. The king is William Rufus, son of William the Conqueror. There is magic in it, but mostly the life of the common people in East Anglia. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in that period of history.

Solid. Unique. Interesting.

This book got me out of my book hangover - I️ started 4 in a row and just couldn’t get hooked after the Outlander series. I’m curious how this will become a series. If you like historical fiction you will enjoy this.

Out of the Dawn Light

This book moved slowly in the beginning. The characters were hard to remember but I am sure that goes with the time. I enjoyed the second half of the book and I will read book two.

CCC

A bit disconnected. There could have been so much more, but instead this book just resorted to hints and suggestions. The only exception was Hrype's account. But even that was a bit vague and unsubstantial.

Very Enjoyable

This is the first book in the series, and I really enjoyed it. The main character is a 13-14 year old girl, and like any real girl has silly thoughts and day dreams. She has to deal with her shrew of a sister while her sister is pregnant. I liked how realistic the story was when she left in the middle of the night to go on a short adventure with a man she was crushing on and her childhood friend. Remembering my own youth I remembered the silly mistakes I made. I liked watching her grow a little wiser with the trials she faced. As I said before I really enjoyed this book, and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series. I recommend this book.
