Romance and adventure and serial killers, oh my!

Set in Victorian England, mostly. That magical time when science was reaching out for the impossible, such as solar engines that could power cannons.

Miss Amity Doncaster had quickly taken control after discovering a badly wounded Benedict Stanbridge during a stop in the Caribbean. Once in New York, Ben stays in America while Amity continues on to London.

It isn't long before Amity finds herself the focus of gossip claiming that she and Ben had an affair while on board the ship. This gossip attracts the attention of serial killer known as the Bridegroom. Amity manages to escape thanks to her fan weapon.

Barely off the boat to London, Ben rushes to Amity's side. Determined to protect her, he declares that they are engaged. He, Amity, and her sister Penny join Scotland Yard's Inspector Logan to find the killer, a member of the Upper Class.

Not only is there a romantic connection between Ben and Amity, but there was definite sparks between Logan and Penny. So many fascinating characters, good and bad. Various twists and turns in both main mysteries soon become a tangled mess.

Yes, there are perhaps a few too many coincidences, but it doesn't take away from the story. Some parts that I really liked include Amity's lack of excitement with her first sexual encounter, Penny's confession that her great love affair with her deceased husband was anything but, Penny's lecture to Ben about the use of condoms, and how Virgil appears normal despite his insanity. Plus both Penny and Amity actually save themselves before Logan and Ben arrive at the killing place.

The thing that has always delighted me about Quick, with rare exceptions, are her main characters, strong yet sometimes clueless about romance. I'm wondering if Declan ever got his own book and I missed it. Loved this romantic adventure. 4.5 out of 5.
