Description

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Young Orion likes to doodle, and his notebook records his scary personal world—big dogs, wasps, girls, the ocean, spiders, heights, storms, and…THE DARK. He's listed many ways to solve his fear of the dark, from amazing inventions to capturing the sun, but at the end of each day, "it's bedtime again." One frustrating evening his nemesis returns in a personal visit. A surprising physical hand pops out as a page extension of the immense Dark greeting young Orion with an invitation to adventure. Orion then begins a time of exploration, understanding, and even enjoyment through visits to the magical shadows of his surroundings while he makes a discovery—"The Dark could be my friend. And nobody (not even me) is scared of their best friend." Digital cartoon illustrations with whimsical pencil doodles (including Orion in his bunny slippers) offer a wide range of fonts and humorous scribbled comments on a child's world. While the small-font doodles might not make this an easy read-aloud, a variety of text in illustrations, speech bubbles, Orion's notebook, and first-person narration create an intimate environment for an inquisitive individual reader with an interest in science and fantasy. VERDICT Strong support for those with unspoken fears, this book is a recommended first purchase for all libraries.—Mary Elam, Learning Media Services, Plano ISD, TX Reminiscent of Oliver Jeffers, Yarlett’s illustrations are a joyful mix of digital collage, sketchbook, and saturated watercolor done in a palette of blueberry and Starburst candies. Many pictures invite close inspection, adding quirky details that fill out the story. Orion’s adventures replace fear with fun, ending with a hug, a new friend, and a well- traveled pair of bunny slippers. This made my 4 year old more scared than before

I purchased this book for my 4 and 6 year old who have been having trouble going to sleep at night. My 6 year old is having the most issues being scared, and I think sometimes my 4 year old feeds off it and thinks he should be scared too (even though he doesn’t have any ideas of what he is actually scared of). Anyhow. I thought this book was very cute, BUT it apparently made my 4 year old more scared of the dark! Apparently all the things Orion was scared of in the book just gave him ideas of things to be scared of too. I found this out at 4am last night when he woke me up and needed me to go lay with him because “he was scared of the new book.” He does not ever wake me up at night to do this, so this is saying something. My 6 year old seemed to like the book. However, immediately after reading it he says, “well, I’m still scared.” So, to sum it up, despite me thinking this was a cute book it did not work for my kids and instead made things worse. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nice book but think first

My son really likes this book, and it's a fun read with lots of pictures and funny little details to add to the story. Like Emma Yarlett's other books, it teaches a lesson and this one is about not being afraid of the dark. My son was not afraid of the dark, but this book put lots of ideas into his active imagination about monsters, the dark, and strange noises. While I know the purpose it to make children unafraid, maybe it was coincidence, but around the time we got this book he started fussing about his dark room and monsters. While I don't think he's truly afraid of monsters, he has about 4 night lights in his room now. It didn't really help curb any possible fears. There seems to be a theme with this author's books and my children. They love the entertaining story and illustrations, but they start mimicking the negative theme such as not sharing like in Sidney and Stella, and being afraid in Orion.

Super cute book and has helped with nighttime fear

My 2.5 yo daughter is scared of the dark. During her well visit I mentioned it to her pediatrician. Since my daughter is a bibliophile and always has a book in her hands the doctor said a book would be the best way to approach the issue with her.

While this book may be a bit old for her she LOVES it. After three nights of reading it in a row (the second two nights by her request) she said “look, He not scared anymore! I not scared anymore!”.

This book is super cute and really seems to be improving her nighttime fear.

Makes talking about being afraid of the dark easy.

I can't wait to read this to my little boy (Orion). My 7 year old daughter is already enjoying it and is looking forward to reading it to her baby brother. THe illustrations are creative and unique. The main character's fear is very real and easy to relate to for kids who are scared of the dark.

This psychologist recommends this book!

What a nice little book to help your kids who are having issues with going to be. As a clinical psychologist who works with kids I use this book in my office and also with my own kids. Personifying the dark as a friend to go on adventures with makes something abstract and scary nice and tangible for little ones.

Cute book

It is a cute book but it is laid out a little confusing for early readers. I just make sure to read it to my little ones or walk my 6 year old through reading it.

Didn't live up to hype

This book was just OK. Didn't really help take the scary out of nighttime for my kids, nor did they find the story particularly engaging. We read it twice and it's been on the shelf ever since. Different approaches work for different children, but the glowing reviews didn't hold true in our household.

Better Name "Orion is Afraid of the Dark"

Its true, you cannot read a book by its cover. I thought the story line would be more about the constellation Orion, telling the kid about the night sky. As an adult I know why there are 3 dots over Orion's name, but the book does not have a connection to the constellations besides the kids name. Its purely about a kid, named Orion who is afraid of the dark. If you have a kid trying to overcome the dark, it might be good. I thought the book belabored all the reasons that make kids afraid of the dark more than how to overcome it. It would definitely give a child who is not afraid of the dark, ideas of why she/he should be. My niece loves the stars and the night sky, and is not afraid of the dark. I decided to return the book because I thought it would give her new fears and reasons to be afraid of the dark, rather than embrace the cool things about the dark like seeing stars. Cool illustrations, but not a great story.

Perfect

My son's name is Orion, and he is afraid of the dark actually lol. This is perfect, I love the book. It's going to part of his Easter gift, and I'm excited about it. It's a hardcover book with a paper folding around it, which can come off. Took some pictures of the book. But for some reason it won't allow me to post them. Really worth the buy. Thank you

Nice book for the kid afraid of the dark

I love the concept of this book and my daughter loves the cutout features. Its has a nice story line and takes on a creative approach to not being scared of the dark. The graphics are nice, however some of them distract from the story and doesn't make the story read smoothly. The text in some places is also a little hard to read as it blends in with the graphics. Overall a nice addition to our book collection as I like the creative approach to teaching kids not to be afraid of the dark, that instead to look at it as adventurous.
