Description

Larry Levin was born in Philadelphia, PA, and lived in various parts of the country, including New England and the Pacific Northwest, before returning to the Philadelphia area. He has been a lawyer for over thirty years, and is now in private practice. In 1982, he married Jennifer Berke, an attorney. Their sons, Noah and Dan, were born in 1990. Oogy is Larry's first book.

Features & Highlights

  • In the bestselling tradition of
  • Rescuing Sprite
  • comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted.
  • In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue--ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms, and decided to take him home. Heartwarming and redemptive,
  • Oogy
  • is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

A must read/listen to

I haven't listened to it yet but I read an article on this poor beautiful dog a couple years ago and it broke my heart. I am an animal
lover and I know I will walk away with a feeling of pride for this dog...

Would love to meet Oogy in person

This is a true story of a disfigured dog and the wonderful family & vet office that saved his life and treated him like a King! Oogy's life started out in a horrible way. But, Larry Levin & his family gave him the life that all dogs would drool for. I would love to meet Oogy and his family. I wish Larry Levin was part of my family, too. This man went beyond becoming a great pet owner. He treated Oogy as if he were another son.

The reader is great. I would love to have lots of books read to me by him. His voice is soothing and expressive. In an audiobook, the reader influences the way the story is perceived. I felt like this could have actually been Mr. Levin's voice. It was as kind as he seems. It made the book even more enjoyable.

The only down points I found was that some parts were drawn out with too much unnecessary detail about unimportant things not related to Oogy. The other down point was that he skipped around a little too much in the timeline of events. I was a little lost in the first part of the book. These points were not a real problem and affected the story very little. It's still a wonderful book to teach us about loving a dog unconditionally.
