Features & Highlights

  • “A fearless exploration of the line between mental illness and true evil, a place many thriller writers visit but without the kind of fearless insights [Tawni] O’Dell reveals in this powerful novel” (
  • The New York Times Book Review
  • ).
  • Dr. Sheridan Doyle—a fastidiously groomed and TV-friendly forensic psychologist—is the go-to shrink for the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office whenever a twisted killer’s mind eludes other experts. But beneath his Armani pinstripes, he’s still Danny Doyle, the awkward, terrified, bullied boy from a blue-collar mining family, plagued by panic attacks and haunted by the tragic death of his little sister and mental unraveling of his mother years ago. Returning to a hometown grappling with its own ghosts, Danny finds a dead body at the infamous Lost Creek gallows where a band of rebellious Irish miners was once executed. Strangely, the body is connected to the wealthy family responsible for the miners’ deaths. Teaming up with veteran detective Rafe, a father-like figure from his youth, Danny—in pursuit of a killer—comes dangerously close to startling truths about his family, his past, and himself. With “poignant…achingly beautiful prose” (
  • San Diego Union
  • ) and “rich, compassionate storytelling” (
  • Entertainment Weekly
  • ), O’Dell weaves a masterful, thrilling tale reminiscent of Gillian Flynn’s
  • Gone Girl
  • , where the past and present collide to put Lost Creek’s long-lived ghosts to bed.

Complex, Unpredictable and Deliciously Satisfying!

I absolutely loved this book. I love this author in general and have yet to read a book I didn't like, but this one is by far my favorite. It had a great story and was captivating the whole way through. It wasn't expected, not at all predictable and had a entirely satisfying ending. LOVED.
I will definitely be re-reading this one!

I have enjoyed all of the author's books and "One of Us" ...

I have enjoyed all of the author's books and "One of Us" was no exception. The story revolves around a Pennsylvania mining community and the main character Daniel is a criminal psychologist and lawyer who escaped the poverty and hardship of the mines, an abusive father & a mother convicted of killing Daniel's only sibling Molly as an infant. But his past is always with him and there is no shortage of complexity & long ago murders are eventually made clear.

Another Solid Story

I just love Tawni O'Dell. I have read most of her books, and she never fails to deliver a solid, engrossing story with memorable characters.

In One of Us, we are introduced to criminal psychologist Danny Doyle. Dr. Doyle specializes in high profile cases--serial killers, psychopaths--and he is well-known for his many books and television appearances. Dr. Doyle lives in the bustling city of Philadelphia. But Danny was born and raised in Lost Creek, a coal-mining town with its own grim history. When Danny is called home to care for the ailing grandfather who raised him, he is pulled into a dark mystery with ties to his own family.

I enjoyed this story very much. Like most of O'dell's other books, the plot moves quickly, the dialogue is believeable, and the characters--even the least likeable ones--have a sense of humor. It's a good read.

A Delicious Read

Great dessert of a novel....delicious! It has just the right amount of character development, suspense and plot development. The prose is well done, but easy to read.....nothing that will tax your brain.

Tawni O'Dell has done better.

A slightly above average small town noir thriller that meanders between a long ago travesty and the unhinged actions of a true sociopath. A bit too "stylish" for me to rank it higher. I found neither the protagonist or his grandfather all that compelling. Tawni O'Dell has done better. I speak of Back Roads and Coal Run which were both excellent renditions of life in the same Pennsylvania region as in One Of Us.
