Description

About the Author Bill Hammond was Born 8/18/49. He went to Vietnam in 1969. He was raised on a farm in Montana and spent most of his free time in the Mission Mountains. He still would rather be on Horse back, riding the mountain trails.

Features & Highlights

  • My tour in Vietnam was 1969-1970. I was with the CoB, 1/7 Marine. 1st Marine Division. I was in the bush for the majority of that tour. Private when I got to Vietnam and a Sgt E-5 when I left Vietnam. All the years since 1970 I've been mentally living in Vietnam. I am learning to live with PTSD.
  • I have spent 49 years living with these memories. They have followed me, not only in waking hours, but also in sleep. The time has come for me to do a little emptying of my mind and memories of a place that seems more like a bad dream than reality. My Tour of Viet Nam. The hardest part of the whole ordeal was being sent home without my fellow Marines, and not knowing who lived or who died. I have a sense of guilt for leaving them behind.
  • I end each story with the Words “Another day closer to the world and Wake-up” because Nam was so foreign and backward and violent compared to what we had left behind, and it seemed like another place other than the real world, like a bad dream. The fact that we might go home outside a body bag to the World was a constant topic of conversation throughout my tour. When we weren’t talking about the last firefight or ambush, we were talking about the possibility of waking up from this bad dream and being back in the world again and home.

Walk in their boots

I've known Bill my entire life, it's inconceivable what these young men had to endure and be expected to lead normal lives with little or no support from their nation. So glad to see that they're finally getting the support and recognitions they deserve.

A personal experience in war!

I read this book having been of that generation but not participating in that war. They wouldn't talk about it when they came home. This book gave me a picture in print that I had only seen in artist paintings! I felt that I was there with him. It was sad and clear how those young men had to be someone they were clearly not! It was written in the first person and I could feel each emotion and heartbreak. He made us feel what he went through. Great job of it too!
To those who would read this book, you will be captivated at his clear description of events that changed his and others lives forever!
I thank him for sharing his experience with us.

An story needing to be told...

My husband had the pleasure of serving with Bill and is mentioned in this book.. He said it brought back very painful memories but also recalled the deep commitment, dependency and trust they had that still exists today. An easy book for even those who don't enjoy reading, yet an extremely moving account of normal individual kids from all walks of life, having to cope with surviving hell on earth...
