Child Pornography alert

First, I have an ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) of the book for review. So my copy may not be the same as the final published book.

Second, I didn't continue reading much beyond the rape of one of the girls.

My thought is this book is child pornography. (Or at least pushes the "envelope" on the line.)

The book basically starts with an old picture and a flash back to when three under age girls are being watched by a pervert. Their disrobing and bodies is described in detail. (Would get an R-rating in a movie.) The pervert's physical and emotional reaction (detailed body parts) is described in vivid (X-rated) detail.

Thankfully the rape of the one girl is confined to "thrusting" and "grunts."

The next chapter begins with a girl (or woman) imprisoned by a pervert... I stopped reading... the book is being recycled.

If this is what it takes to "scare" people (see the "scariest novel of the year" just above the book's title)....

Scary

There are so many levels and secrets in this novel that it will truly keep you guessing until the end....and then you still won’t believe it. The 3 women are portrayed so beautifully considering what they’ve endured and they have wrestled with some horrible demons (of the human form). It should be noted that it does deal with a lot of violence towards women, which some readers may not like. However, they each prove their strength, perseverance, and courage!

Lying In Wait

three teens escape small town boredom for a night of skinny dipping at an isolated lake. But the fun ends with a brutal assualt. One girl is raped and the others are injured warding off the attacker. The three, Shiloh, a tough teen with a gift with horses and a tumultuous home life, Kat, the daughter of a detective assigned to a current case involving missing girls, and Ruth, the image conscious daughter of a strict minister, agree to keep the incident a secret. They quickly disband, leaving the small town behind. Fifteen years later sees a reunion. Kat is now a deputy at the police department. Shiloh returns home to see her ailing mother and winds up dealing with a step brother and a half sister. And ruth is now divorced, a psychologists with kids. Unfortunately for them their attacker is lying in wait, plotting revenge. But when the recently deceased body of one of the girls missing from fifteen years earlier shows up and another girl goes missing, the cold case goes into hard drive. Secrets will be revealed and lives placed in jeopardy.

this is a fairly predictable romantic suspense. the frothy romance is jarring next to the darker story of rape and sexual exploitation. there are too many characters and Identified the perpetrator at first appearance. This is the type of book that is a quick read and more enjoyable if you don't really think about it. I found the girls decision to keep the secret of the attack hard to fathom. It was obviously a traumatic and frightening event. If you overlook the implausibilities, it is a fast fun read I prefer my suspense with significantly less romance but overall it is a decent beach read. 3.5 stars

Aptly Titled!

Usually when I read a story set in a small town, like Prairie Creek, it is a place of serenity. However, these three authors takes readers away from the norm, allowing them to experience the atrocities. This story is filled with horrendous events, that made this reader extremely uncomfortable at times, but it is so well written that I was glad I finished the story. The authors did a fabulous job of collaborating - resulting in a seamless story, as if a single individual wrote it.

FYI - There was a prior release in this series, Sinister! But Ominous is completely stand-alone.

Recommended for anyone looking for a dark tale set in a small town.

Too many coincidences

Just a few too many coincidences for my taste. Fifteen years ago, three teens went skinny dipping at night. They were attacked, one raped, then rescued by the other two. The girls kept their secret, even as other girls disappear. Now, one girl is on the police force, and the other two return to town. So far so good, huh? Then all three find the man of their dreams, have steamy sex, and fall in true forever love. In the meantime, the rapist is caught. Id call this a beach read if it weren't for the dark theme of girls kidnapped and kept as sex slaves. The book can't decide whether to be sinister or romantic.

Ending felt very rushed

I enjoyed the first half of the book; the suspense was building and we were getting to know the characters. Then the middle started to really drag. Then - poof! - in one predictable and rushed scene, suddenly it was over. Very disappointing ending.
