Description

Carol Ann Rinzler is the author of more than twenty books on health and medicine, including Nutrition For Dummies, an international bestseller translated into fourteen languages that led to a stint as nutrition columnist for the New York Daily News. Rinzler's award-winning Estrogen and Breast Cancer: A warning for women (1993, 1995) was among the first to document the link between hormone therapy and an increased risk of breast tumors. Her four books in the Dummies series (Nutrition plus Controlling Cholesterol,Weight Loss, and Heartburn and Reflux) make complex medical facts and figures accessible to the general reader. As for her own reading, she says that "as a writer who specializes in medical subjects, my absolutely favorite books are my almost-complete sets of the Merck Manual and the Merck Index. This wonderful collection is an extraordinary record of the history of illness and orthodox treatment in the United States that makes it possible to track the evolving diagnosis, description and treatment of a disease or condition over more than a century. For example, in one chapter of my new book, Leonardo's Foot, I was able to use the Manuals to show the changes in how people regarded and treated flatfoot, a seemingly non-controversial deformity once used to identify those believed to be Devil's disciples. I am still searching for the second edition of the Manual, published in 1901. Alas, each new volume in the series was so widely available that doctors simply tossed out the old one when the latest one appeared." RDA = Really Dumb Advice

The writing style is very good. Carol writes with a nice touch of humor that helps make this a very readable book.

Unfortunately this is not current, expert information. This is mainstream medicine's point of view on nutrition.

There is a lot of great information in this book if you don't know anything about nutrition. But there is also a lot of obsolete / incorrect information which unfortunately those who are uneducated about nutrition won't realize when reading this. Due to the title “Nutrition for Dummies”, I'm assuming the average reader won't have expertise in the field of nutrition.

Chapter 3 briefly covers RDAs and DRIs starting out with the statement “A healthful diet provides sufficient amounts of all the nutrients that your body needs. The question is, how much is enough?” but fails to point out that in our modern society it is impossible to consume a “healthful diet”. The implication is that if you eat a piece of cardboard that has been flavored like a pizza and it has been fortified with the RDA of vitamins then you are okay. That type of advice is terrible in my opinion.

Chapter 4 addresses the obesity epidemic and includes a table “How much should You Weigh?” with categories for 19 to 34 years old and 35 and older. Really? Just because you are older you should weigh more? Nonsense! A healthy weight at age 25 is the same as a healthy weight at age 55! This table isn't likely to help much either, if you are an average height male according to the table you should weigh between 125 to 164. Hmm... 125 seems absurdly skinny to me. Overall this is actually a very good chapter.

This is a terrible book for information about vitamins. For example Vitamin B12 is described as cyanocobalamin. Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of B12 which is cheap and shelf stable (cyanide bonded to cobalamin). It isn't what occurs in nature like methylcobalamin (a healthy methyl group bonded to cobalamin) or 5-deoxyadenosylcobalamin which are found in human metabolism. Likewise she gives the statement “Folic acid, also known as folate...” - Wrong! Folic acid (cheap and toxic in high doses) is NOT folate (vital for health).

This leads us to the flaw in the “Too Much or Too Little” section. “Too much” comes not from getting too much nutrition but rather from taking too much of synthetic, unhealthy forms of nutrients. Actually this is a topic that needs elaborate discussion because it is more likely that instead of getting too much of something you are getting an imbalance of something.
The author makes the point that we “process” food routinely in our own homes (by refrigerating it, cooking it, etc). This is true, but it's very different from the processing done by factories to create “food” items that are closer to flavored cardboard than true food. She defines the word organic but never addresses why you might want to eat organic food.

Essentially if you are happy with the health our modern society and allopathic medicine have created then you'll be happy with this book. If you're looking to optimize your nutrition and learn how to be truly healthy then this book is a terrible resource. It is a mix of great basic technical information and a lot of misleading, obsolete ideas carried forward by the standard “consult your doctor for advice” concept. (the typical MD has virtually no training in nutrition)
