Description

Jane Goodall, Ph.D., CBE Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace Angelina is living proof of the power we all have -- every one of us -- to make a difference. I was deeply moved by her descriptions of individual refugees struggling to live with dignity and hope, and found her personal commitment to be an inspiration. Angelina's journals document her awakening as a humanitarian activist and I hope they will move readers to act. I look forward to my continued work with Angelina on behalf of the United Nations. Angelina Jolie is an award-winning actress and has starred in over thirty films, including Maleficent, Girl, Interrupted , Changeling , and many more. She has directed four feature films and one documentary. She lives in Los Angeles with her children. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Introduction I was asked to write an introduction to my journals, to explain how my journals came to be, why my life took this direction, and why I decided to start it.As I try to find the answers, I am sure of one thing: I am forever changed. I am so grateful I took this path in my life, thankful that I met these amazing people and had this incredible experience.I honestly believe that if we were all aware, we would all be compelled to act.So the question is not how or why I would do this with my life. The question is, how could I not? Many nights I sat awake reading stories and statistics about national and international tragedies.I read about UNHCR:• More than twenty million refugees exist today.• One-sixth of the world's population lives on less than one dollar a day.• 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water.• One-third of the world has no electricity.• More than 100 million children are out of school.• One in six children in Africa dies before the age of five.I read about different organizations that do humanitarian work. I had been reading about Sierra Leone when I was in England. When I got back to the States it was difficult to follow the stories, so I called USA for UNHCR and asked if they could help me understand the situation there and similar situations elsewhere in the world. Three weeks later I was in Sierra Leone.I don't know how this will be as a book, how readers will find it. I am not a writer. These are just my journals. They are just a glimpse into a world that I am just beginning to understand, a world I could never really explain in words.Copyright © 2003 by Angelina Jolie --This text refers to the paperback edition. Good read for humanitarian beginners

Although not a scholarly work of literature, the book is a quick and good read about hr travels abroad. I would recommend this book to someone new to the humanitarian field or someone who has a very small world view. For those who have already been exposed to that realm, I would pass.

The sad true stories of the world

Angelina Jolie gives us a simple but powerful view of the conflicts around the world and how they affect people.

Her writting is straighforward and does try to tell the tales mildly. She describes the truth. The true stories of the victims of many conflicts.

It is quite wonderful to be able to see these events through her eyes, eyes that are not trained to understand them, but to feel them, just like our own eyes.

Some stories might make you feel sick and to wonder how men could possibly do this, but they also show us the will of amazing people who have been through many unfortunate events and still have the will to live on.

This book will help you understand some conflicts that happen in our world and will also make you grateful for what you have in your life, as most people in the stories have nothing at all.

Everyone should read it.

Loved this book
Angelina Jolie is an amazing and strong woman. I really admire her.
What's she's doing to help the world is tough on the soul and takes a special person.
I looked looking behind the screen image of her and actually getting to see her.
I cried several times.

Everyone should read

This is a wondeful book from a wonderful pearson, you can tell how truely passinote she is about what she dose. This book is very eyeopening to many heart breaking and devistating things so many people go through but so few people know about. I believe if we were more informed and more people understood that more people would care and take action to end these horrific events and save millions of people from this kind of devistaion, and heal the world.

Example in Humility

I appreciate that the writer didn't try to show that she knew it all, or be sophisticated about the issues. Her humility, politeness, and thoughtfulness showed in her writing. I bought this book a long time ago and keep it for my middle-school child to read as I feel it shows the correct approach in trying to learn and understand human beings who are in different circumstances than us.

Good read

A very sobering read. Very well written. It is written like you'd expect in a journal and it accounts Mrs. Jolie's observations and experiences during her introduction to working with UNHCR. Very thoughtfully written and you learn quite a bit reading it.
