Features & Highlights

  • There are few more satisfying sights on a city street than a well-stocked newsstand, hung with a hundred or more magazines and periodicals, each competing for the attention of the potential customer. The American magazine cover enjoyed a Golden Age during the period that opened with the high speed color press, and ended when subscription sales grew to paramount importance. Dozens of gifted artists - from J. C. Leyendecker to John Held - made their reputations in this field. None of them, however, achieved the immense and sustained popular success enjoyed by Norman Rockwell. At the outset of his career, Rockwell was not the most likely candidate for long-term celebrity; he was just one of many skillful illustrators working within the conventions of the day. But there was something tenacious about his vision, and something uncanny about his access to the well-springs of public taste. Although technically he was an academic painter, he had the eye of a photographer and, as he became a mature artist, he used this eye to give us a picture of America that was familiar - astonishingly so - and at the same time unique. It seemed familiar because it was everyone's dream of America; and it was unique because only Rockwell managed to bring it to life with such authority. This was, perhaps, an America that never existed, and never could, but it was an America that the public wanted to exist. And Rockwell put it together from elements that were there for everyone to see, so that he was able to give it the look of documentary reality. He held up a friendly mirror to the society he lived in, and Americans have looked into this glass and seen themselves as warm, decent, hard-working citizens of a country bountiful enough to accommodate their boundless optimism.Rockwell helped preserve American myths, but, more than that, he recreated them and made them palatable for new generations. His function was to reassure people, to remind them of old values in times of rapid change.

A disappointing publication of a Masters works

I love Norman Rockwell paintings, and I jump at the chance to see his works when possible. So when I found this book at my local book store, I was thrilled to have such a massive collection of Rockwell's paintings in one collection on my bookshelf. Sadly, in my stupor over my find, I failed to fully inspect the prints as closely as I should have, otherwise I would have noticed how washed and faded the colors are on all of the prints (the exception being the cover sleeve, which was more vibrant than the print found in the books pages). It's sad that so much of the color is just absent from the paintings, but I suppose that's what happens when a publisher cares more about money than about quality. Save your pennies folks and just go see the real things in a museum when they come through your neck of the woods.

Every home needs exposure to Norman Rockwell.

Wonderful. Even my grandkids enjoy this book. The covers were done long before even their parents were born, but the appeal is universal. It's fun when the grandkids ask questions and notice the little social intricacies which made Nornam Rockwell so loved by so many.

Not what I expected

OK for leisurely viewing but not for study. I do not recommend this to art students who are looking for high quality reproductions of the original paintings. The images seem to be SCANS OF THE PRINTS from the publications that Norman illustrated for. They have poor color and contrast, and some are poorly cut (to remove the magazine title, I'm assuming). It would have looked much better untouched.

I've seen better reproductions. I should have read all of the customer reviews before buying.

Nostalgic and delightful

Beautiful collection! Bought this gift for husband who's nostalgic and longs for simpler days. He loves it but won't put it out on the coffee table for us all to enjoy--stores it safely away from grandchildren. So, I haven't looked at it much.

If you love Norman Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post pictures, you will love this book! There are some pictures that I have never seen before. It is a great coffee table book. You will never get tired of looking at all the pictures. You get a sense of what life was like back when Norman Rockwell drew those pictures.

The 'coffe table' hardback arrived as scheduled and in mint condition. The book was for my 86 year old father. To him it is a pictoral history of his life. Thank you Amazon for stellar service, DR
