Features & Highlights

  • Written in the tradition of Maggie O'Farrell and Louise Doughty, this is psychological suspense at its very best
  • Dan and a group of his friends enjoy a Sunday lunch together on a perfect summer's day. They're pleased to welcome their glamorous new neighbor and novelist, Ellie, who has rented a house in the village to work on her book. This book was a page-turner. I was so entangled with Cass's problems, I had to cheat and see how it came out in the end. The only problem was in the end the explanation for Dan's behavior was only somewhat credible. The plot unveiled itself seamlessly. On my download version, there were a lot of grammatical/editing errors, so those should be corrected in future editions.

Mixed review

I liked the concept of this book. It explores just how fragile our bonds and our sanity can be when deliberately manipulated by a calculating interloper. The book looks at the dark side of human nature and the many ambiguous motives that people can have. The concept is interesting, and the writing was good, but for me, there was still something missing. I did not like the character of Cass well enough to root for her.

Gaslighting

I enjoyed this book but at times it was uncomfortable reading because it was a little too close to the life my father inflicted on my beautiful, loving, faithful and trusting mother. Gaslighting ? Who knew?
