Danielle Quintero ***** Good Reads Review I loved how his mother made this book to help him better understand who he is and why things are the way they are for him. She made sure he knew he was special in the most amazing way and to never let other people tell him different. He was diagnosed with Autism/Aspergers as a child so his "superhero" power as his mom called it, should never define him, but just make him a stronger person. She goes on to help him and help others know their "superhero" powers as well. It is a sweet and touching book, and I love it even more because it is based on the life of the author and her son, so it's more real. Rebecca Maney ***** What a Wonderful Book! One of the best, yet simplest, conversations about a topic that touches the lives of so many children, their families, their friends, their teachers. The "Helpful Hints for Friends" sprinkled throughout the book are insightful and practical! Chris Wade ***** Great way to encourage the appreciation of diversity in the classroom! As a special education teacher I found this book very valuable not only in reminding myself of the special aspects of the child with autism (in particular the part about energy drainers and energy builders), but a great introduction for all students in the classroom to gain an understanding of some of the peers in their midst who might seem a bit different. I especially enjoyed the bits of humor throughout and the end where Nathan's states "That was exhausting" and goes to his room to play with blocks by himself. Such a great representation of student's with this disability, while still stressing the individuality of each child. xa0 . Sue Stone ***** Great book with awesome tips. For all ages. I was gifted this book by a friend. I have a grandson on the spectrum and this really helped me to understand what is happening with him. I've read several books but all were geared to adults and very clinical. This gave great tips and suggestions and will help us going forward. I bought 2 more copies for the other set of grandparents and his parents. I think it will really allow his big brother learn to help too. Love it. What makes Nathan a superhero? His Autism Spectrum Superpowers ! - Nathan's Autism Spectrum Superpowers , the first book in the One Three Nine Inspired series, offers a unique perspective on how kids with autism see the world. Each superpower also comes with a "Helpful Hints" section for friends, families, and caregivers because sometimes superpowers can spiral out of control . -Why this new perspective? I wanted my son to know that just because he reacted to things differently than his friends, that didn't make him odd, it made him special. So I came up with an idea to explain autism in a way that made sense to him . After I told Nathan about "Supersonic Hearing," he finally understood why noises could be so loud and overwhelming, and he wanted to know ALL his superpowers. -All kids need to believe they're wonderfully made. Nathan's Autism Spectrum Superpowers helps show them their value and encourages them to believe in their own worth. This book is an EDUCATIONAL TOOL to help children and their friends, family, and caregivers understand kids on the Autism Spectrum and Aspergers. The author, Lori Leigh Yarborough, is a physical therapist and graduate from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She makes her home in Texas with her husband and their four children.xa0*Her second son, Nathan, was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum with Aspergers when he was little. She came up with a creative way to explain to Nathan why he didn't respond to things like other kids did. After she told Nathan about his "Supersonic Hearing" he was so excited to finally understand in a way that made sense why things were so loud and overwhelming to him. He wanted to know ALL his superpowers. So she wrote this book for him. Read more

Loved It!

I am not one who usually writes reviews, but this book was a turning point for us. We are currently going through formal testing for autism. I got this book to help my child understand why we were going through testing for he calls his "computer brain." He completely embraced this book. We starred the super powers that he thinks he has, and he added his own super powers in the write in section in the back. After reading the story, he also asked if we could give a copy to his school teacher and counselor. He's also shared this with his grandparents. It's been a great way to help our child and those around him better understand how he thinks and how to support him.

Children's Librarian

A young boy equates his autistic traits to superpowers and describes why they can be overwhelming at times. For example, his sensory sensitivity to sound is his “supersonic hearing.” Small sounds can seem loud and distracting. Each superpower is accompanied by a helpful hint for friends about how to help their spectrum friend in overwhelming situations. The tone is positive and describes autism as a difference in processing and communicating information, not a disability. This would be a good resource for helping classmates or teammates better understand and support an autistic friend.

Should Be Used in the Classroom

I was gifted This book and love it. We are a large special needs adoptive family and are so glad to have this book in our toolbox. Though I've read it, I plan on reading it to all my kids. I hear stories time and time again of children (or even adults) being unkind JUST because they don't understand. This book will help change that.

What a blessing

This book came my way by accident and I'm so glad it did. My daughter is 6 and has high functioning autism. We bought this book for us, her teachers and family members. It helps explain some things in an easy manner. We will be purchasing as gifts again, for sure. Thank you to the author for this type of book that puts such a positive spin on things that can be challenging.

Fantastic!!!

I teach second grade at a school that hosts an annual Ability Awareness event. This book is perfect at teaching autism awareness in a bright light! Shortly after reading this to my students, one of my boys walked up to a student in our school's special day class to ask what super power he had... It was a great lesson and opportunity to build friendships!

A great little book.

This book is wonderful for helping to explain to children and adults the effects of autism and how to help someone experiencing them. It is expressed in simple easy to understand words and scenarios. I highly recommend this book.
