Description

Review “A frequently hilarious and too often heartbreaking story of life with the women he called “my girls”.… More than a Hollywood tell-all, Fisher’s memoir of a family’s love and endurance under trying and sometimes outrageous circumstances is a clear-eyed tribute to lives lived to the fullest. — Publishers Weekly Poignant and joyous, genuine and reverential, Fisher’s tribute to these larger-than-life creative ladies is a down-to-earth portrait of a loving mother and supportive sister. — - Booklist From the Back Cover In December 2016, the world was shaken by the sudden deaths of Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, two unspeakable losses that occurred in less than twenty-four hours of each other. Debbie’s only remaining child, Todd Fisher, somehow managed to retain his grace and composure as he confronted his overwhelming grief. In My Girls , Todd pays homage to these two unsinkable women who shaped him, celebrating their outspoken legacies with a candid yet uproarious glimpse at life in their one-of-a-kind family. The children of “America’s Sweethearts” Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, Carrie and Todd grew up amid the glamorous wealth and pretense of Hollywood, and here he shares stories from that incredible childhood—from dazzling parties to the MGM back lot. Detailing how this precocious youth and life with Debbie, a tender, hardworking career woman, set the stage for Carrie’s own budding career and meteoric ascent in Star Wars , Todd sheds new light on Carrie’s uneasy connection to fame and life as Debbie Reynolds’s daughter. Speaking openly about Carrie’s struggles with substance abuse and bipolar disorder as well as Debbie’s lifelong difficulties with men, Todd provides an honest look at some of their most challenging times together, illustrating the depth of the bonds that connected the three of them, even as they were tested time and time again. He also examines the unfailing bravery that Carrie and Debbie displayed as they dealt with their demons, demonstrating how through it all, no amount of darkness ever diminished their humor, talent, or spirit. With thirty-two pages of never-before-seen photos and memorabilia from his family’s private archives, My Girls is a moving account of two extraordinary women whose connection to each other proved so powerful not even death could separate them for long. About the Author Todd Fisher is a director, cinematographer, and producer of television, films, and documentaries. He lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his wife, Catherine Hickland. Read more

Inside Story of A Family of Hollywood Stars

Todd Fisher's tale of his life as son of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher and brother of Carrie Fisher is a delightful and fascinating read. Mr. Fisher has an enthralling story to tell, from his front-row seat in a tumultuous family with plenty of ups and downs. The book is extremely easy to read, and there are enough high and low points to keep the reader fully absorbed. A definite must for fans of both Hollywood's Golden Age and its Star Wars age.

A Love Story

When I purchased the book My Girls: A Lifetime with Carrie and Debbie I had expected a typical Hollywood story. I found myself crying through the last chapters of Todd’s love letter to his mother and sister. That he calls his big sister and his mother his girls should tell you right off that this is a love story. The fact that Carrie and Debbie are fan-favorite movie stars is only incidental to the story.
That sweet little Debbie Reynolds should tell a major director/actor that she would put out a hit on him if he touched her daughter, and that she was believable in her threat says something about how much she loved her children. That her son would use a similar sentiment to a man contemplating marriage,
“If anything like that should ever happen again… you’ll have me to deal with.”
He Laughed.
(I reminded him of that … latter. He wasn’t laughing then.)
It seems that Richard was not as smart as Warren, he didn’t take the warning seriously. These three protected each other. This memoir shows that and their love.
One of the most enjoyable biographies I have ever read.

not sure

Not sure what to think about Todd's book. Carrie's "The Princess Diarist" doesn't mention a lot of what Todd writes. I wonder if he could have gotten this book published if Debbie and Carrie were still alive. It seems a bit to me like he had the last word, and they have no opportunity to say anything about it.

Amazing read! I couldn't put it down!

I just finished reading this book and oh my God what a great read! I couldn't put it down. Todd writes so beautifully, Debbie created some talented babies! I really enjoyed hearing Todd's side of things. And boy did he really take care of his girls, particularly his mother. If it weren't for Todd I don't know where Debbie would be. By the end of the book, I was crying. Thank you, Todd, for writing this beautiful book, I'm sure Debbie and Carrie are very proud!
