Description

About the Author Sonia Sotomayor graduated summa cum laude from Princeton in 1976 and from Yale Law School in 1979. She worked as an assistant district attorney in New York and then at the law firm of Pavia & Harcourt. From 1992 to 1998, she served as a judge of the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, and from 1998 to 2009 on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In May 2009, President Barack Obama nominated her as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court; she assumed this role on August 8, 2009.

Features & Highlights

  • The first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor has become an instant American icon. Now, with a candor and intimacy never undertaken by a sitting Justice, she recounts her life from a Bronx housing project to the federal bench, a journey that offers an inspiring testament to her own extraordinary determination and the power of believing in oneself. Here is the story of a precarious childhood, with an alcoholic father (who would die when she was nine) and a devoted but overburdened mother, and of the refuge a little girl took from the turmoil at home with her passionately spirited paternal grandmother. But it was when she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes that the precocious Sonia recognized she must ultimately depend on herself. She would learn to give herself the insulin shots she needed to survive and soon imagined a path to a different life. With only television characters for her professional role models, and little understanding of what was involved, she determined to become a lawyer, a dream that would sustain her on an unlikely course, from valedictorian of her high school class to the highest honors at Princeton, Yale Law School, the New York County District Attorney's office, private practice, and appointment to the Federal District Court before the age of forty. Along the way we see how she was shaped by her invaluable mentors, a failed marriage, and the modern version of extended family she has created from cherished friends and their children. Through her still-astonished eyes, America's infinite possibilities are envisioned anew in this warm and honest book, destined to become a classic of self-invention and self-discovery.

Great insight into a justice's personality.

This is a book that gives great insight into a Supreme Court Justice's thoughts and experiences that shape decisions. I don't agree with all of her decisions any more that I agree with the decisions of the other eight. However, I am proud to see her on the court from a "side of the tracks" that is difficult to walk over and speak for the people who don't grow up in country club privilege. This is a well written book and is a vital edition to the body of personal experience for justices and how they would come to the decisions that they reach.

Aren't we lucky to have her on the Supreme Court!!

By the time I finished this book, I was so proud to be in a country where Sonia Sotomayor was on our highest court. Following her account of her life, I was so impressed with her perseverance as she tackled her diagnosis of diabeties when she was eight, maintained her commitment to her education even when there were racial and gender obstacles placed in her way, and kept working hard throughout her professional endeavors. Yet through it all, she comes across as a very approachable person who cares about people and experiences the joy and beauty of her life. I would love to meet her. It is one of the best autobiographies I have read in a long time.

We are fortunate to have someone as accomplished on the Supreme Court

The book provided lively insights into Judge Sotomayor's character. My respect for her increased as I read about all she has overcome and what she has achieved. We are fortunate to have someone as accomplished on the Supreme Court.

Up close and personal

Other reviewers have already provided excellent comments. There isn't much more insight to add than to watch Judge Sotomayor talk about herself and the book, up close and personal.
