Description

"[A] well-written and powerfully effective story whose protagonists (and readers) end up getting much more than they bargained for." — Wall Street Journal , Best Books of 2021 “Joshilyn Jackson’s latest riveting thriller starts with a bang and doesn’t let up, asking how well you truly know the people around you—and how far you’re willing to go for the ones you love. A true page-turner that will stick with me for a long time.” — Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author of The Girl from Widow Hills , on Mother May I "Longtime readers of Jackson’s who embraced her genre switch from Southern fiction to domestic thriller with Never Have I Ever will be glad to see she’s taken things a step grittier and darker with Mother May I. Jackson knows how to ratchet up the suspense." — Publishers Weekly on Mother May I “All the things we love about Joshilyn Jackson come together with panache in Mother May I : subtle yet scalding insights on the nature of privilege, compelling, vibrant characters, and the wily plot and breakneck pace of a thriller. Mother May I sets a new standard for the genre: it’s razor-sharp, merciless, and masterful.” — Rose Carlyle, #1 internationally bestselling author of The Girl in the Mirror , on Mother May I "If Joshilyn Jackson has not yet been deemed the Queen of the Twist, I would like to award her that title. I picked up Mother May I before bed, wholly unprepared for how immediately drawn in I would be. I stayed up way too late and then did not put it down the entire next day. Rarely do I say something is “unputdownable,” but I have no reservations about saying so in this case. Such a fantastic psychological mystery — I was enthralled until the very end!” — Shane Mullen of Left Bank Books forxa0Buzzfeed News, on Mother May I "One writer who never fails to amuse is Atlanta authorxa0Joshilyn Jackson. Intense Suspenseful Heart Pounding Thriller

"If you ever want to see your baby again, GO HOME. Tell no one. Do not call the police. Do not call your husband. Be at your home by 5:15 P.M. Or he's gone for good."

The above note is one of the most terrifying things a mother can experience. Just reading it makes my heart pound. From the beginning of Mother May I by Joshilyn Jackson I could feel my every heart beat until I reached the last page. Even then, this book stayed with me. I could not shake the repercussions that caused this kidnapping and the fact that money was not the ultimate goal.

Bree Cabbat is happily married to the man of her dreams who has given her three healthy children, a beautiful home, a place in Georgia high society and peace of mind. All of that is shattered when her baby boy is taken when her husband is away for the weekend. The culprit does not want money but wants her to attend a party at her husband's law firm and drug her husband's oldest friend. Needless to say everything goes horribly wrong leading Bree on a tension filled 72 hour quest to get to the truth of what started this nightmare and how to get her son back.

This author should give a master class on how to write an intense suspenseful novel.
The amazing thing about this story is all the complexities involved in what led to Bree's baby being taken. The idea that reality and our own truth are often in conflict with each other is a major theme.

There was so much I did not see coming in this plot, though one reveal at the end I knew pretty early on because I am a jaded thriller reader. Make sure you have no plans when you start this book because you will not be doing anything else until you finish it.

I received a free copy of this book from the publishers for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

What a page turner!

This is the 7th novel by this author that I have read. She is a local Southern author that I have followed for years. When my book club recommended this for our new book, I was glad. But this is nothing like Jackson's previous novels. It was a very tightly written thrill ride. Several in my club said they could not put it down. It is the story of a girl raised in poverty by a very strict mother who married well. She is a stay at home Mom to 2 teen girls and has just had a baby boy. One day at her oldest daughter's play rehearsal, her baby goes missing. This is the story of what lead to the baby's abduction and the aftermath. It was frightening and entirely believable.

What a Page-Turner!

I've read several books since finishing MOTHER MAY I, and I'm still thinking about the ending. No spoilers, but the twist is a timely, dark, haunting what-if? from several different perspectives.

The first sentence hooked me: "I woke up to see a witch peering in my bedroom window." And I could barely put the book down. Obviously the writing is gorgeous and smart and funny--Joshilyn Jackson, people!--the tension never lets up, and the characters are multi-layered.

It's a unique story about motherhood, revenge, trust, and unforgivable mistakes.

At the heart of the plot is a simple question: "How far would you go to save your child?" The answer is anything but simple.
