Description

From Booklist The latest Oregon Files adventure opens with Juan Cabrillo breaking into a Russian supermax prison to free a friend, the man who had helped outfit Cabrillo’s ship, the Oregon, with its high-tech hardware. Shot during the escape, the man soon dies but not before uttering his cryptic last words, about an “eerie boat,” the Aral Sea, and a name: Tesla. Cabrillo soon—one might say almost too slickly soon—finds the boat, a pleasure craft built in Pennsylvania for George Westinghouse, who had been a big booster of inventor Nikola Tesla’s alternating current (AC) electrical system in the late nineteenth century. That pleasure boat vanished at sea in 1902. But what did a mysterious blue cloud have to do with the disappearance, and how did the boat turn up in the Aral Sea, 10,000 miles from where it vanished? And what does any of this have to do with a modern-day superweapon that could change the face of the world forever? The Oregon Files stories don’t represent Cussler’s finest work, but fans can depend on them to deliver action and adventure, if not full-bodied characters. --David Pitt Praise for Mirage “Whenever any reader thinks about the ultimate action/adventure books, Clive Cussler is the name that appears in their minds. And this new offering in the Oregon Files series is another stunner that can claim to be one of the best action books of 2013 . . . The conclusion is the usual Cussler nail-biter.”— Publishers Weekly Praise for The Jungle "Cussler's high-octane eighth Oregon Files novel, THE JUNGLE, is sure to delight series fans."— Publishers Weekly "With daring escapes, torturous imprisonment, heart-stopping action, and last-minute victories, THE JUNGLE is an action/adventure thriller reader's dream. Another Great Story From The Oregon Files

Clive Cussler and Jack Du Brul have written another great Oregon Files story, and in this one, the fate of the world hangs in the balance.

Juan Cabrillo and his crew mates of the ship Oregon are tasked with rescuing Yuri Borodin from a remote Russian prison. Originally an adversary of Cabrillo's, the two have become friends over the years. Borodin was put in prison by a corrupt Russian admiral. Now, Cabrillo and his crew must find a way into the prison.

Fatally wounded during the rescue, Borodin utters the words "Aral Sea", "eerie boat", and "Tesla" to Cabrillo. What do these clues mean? Soon, Cabrillo and his crew are off trying to unravel the mystery. Delving deeper, "Tesla" refers to Nikola Tesla. Famous for his numerous inventions and far-out theories, Tesla was a true pioneer in the electronics age. Apparently, Tesla was working on some sort of cloaking device which could possibly conceal an entire ship. Add this fact in to the corrupt Russian admiral who was none too happy with Borodin's escape, and Cabrillo's group is in for their greatest adventure yet. Spanning the globe from Siberia to Uzbekistan, and from the Atlantic to a military confrontation between Japan and China, Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon must act quickly before World War III erupts.

I'm a big fan of all of Cussler's series, including the Fargos, Isaac Bell, Kurt Austin, Dirk Pitt, and the Oregon Files. I especially enjoyed reading "Mirage". As always, the story is loaded with great action and adventure, and the characters are well-developed. This story does not disappoint. It was fun reading and trying to figure out what Cabrillo's next move would be. If you're a fan of action/adventure, then be sure to read "Mirage"; you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.

Cussler "borrowed" too many ideas from movies of old. But it's a good read.

Compared to the others in the Oregon Files series, the author puts Cabrillo in too many death spirals...... like one after another. Naturally, he escapes each one of them by the hair of his chinny-chin-chin. But in so doing, the author doesn't focus as much on the rest of the team individually, as he has so successfully done in the past. Linda Ross, for example, is nothing but a cameo in Mirage. Cussler (if he even had anything to do with writing the story at all), also did something I didn't like in this book. He copied the rescue of the people trapped in a capsized yacht straight out of The Poseidon Adventure. The only thing missing was Ernest Borgnine and Shelly Winters. I almost skipped those pages. The second thing that added to the triteness of the book was his ascent to the top floor of the baddy's penthouse was with a jet-pack - a stunt from a 40 yr. old James Bond film. These two examples were obviously "borrowed" from movies of old, and indicated the author was fresh out of imagination. Other than that, if the reader has a working knowledge of EMP, it helps him to navigate through an entertaining story.

Great, thanks

Thanks, I have waited three years to read this book. As always, I was not let down. I think to those of us that were raised in the 50s we love this kind of character hero...There is a part of Juan in all of us. Would love to see this turned into a movie. Who do you think should be in the cast? Juan....?

What a Fun Read!

This reader is a fan of author Clive Cussler and the 73 novels that he has written or co-authored with others and represents the most books of any author represented in this reader’s library. Since he co-authors with five others, including now his son Dirk, one typically gets behind on reading new releases. So, a stroll through the library shelves discovered that “Mirage” which was published in 2013 with author Jack Du Brul, was unread. “Mirage” is one of the 13 novels in the Oregon Files series. What a fun read it was.

Juan Cabrillo is the Chairman of the Corporation, or in other words the captain of the Oregon, a high-tech vessel, that looks like a floating dump. The Corporation is a group of talented individuals that take the Oregon on assignments that brings them a lot of money, whether from governments or private interests doing dangerous assignments.

While attempting to rescue a friend from a prison in Siberia, the mission fails when the friend is killed on the escape. Before dying his says a few words to Juan that involve a corrupt Russian admiral, the admiral who put the friend in this private prison. Juan decides to investigate. One of the words said was Tesla, meaning Nicola Tesla, the genius known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current electricity supply system.

Evidently the late Nicola Tesla was doing electrical experiments camouflaging a ship, as well as being able to destroy a vessel with electromagnetic radiation. The corrupt Russian has evidently secured the technology that Tesla was developing and now has a weapon no country could fight against. He must be stopped and Juan and the Corporation set off to do just that.

Most certainly does Juan and his team get into the most dangerous situations, and yet they always survive. “Mirage” was the last of the Oregon Files series that was co-authored with Jack Du Brul. The four novels that follow this one was co-authored with Boyd Morrison. It will be interesting to see if the stories will continue to flow in the same vein as those written with Jack Du Brul.
