Features & Highlights

  • In Millions Like Us Virginia Nicholson tells the story of the women's Second World War, through a host of individual women's experiences. We tend to see the Second World War as a man's war, featuring Spitfire crews and brave deeds on the Normandy beaches. But in conditions of "Total War" millions of women - in the Services and on the Home Front - demonstrated that they were cleverer, more broad-minded and altogether more complex than anyone had ever guessed. Millions Like Us tells the story of how these women loved, suffered, laughed, grieved and dared; how they re-made their world in peacetime. And how they would never be the same again ... 'Vividly entertaining, uplifting and humbling, Millions Like Us deserves to be a bestseller' Bel Mooney, The Daily Mail 'Passionate, fascinating, profoundly sympathetic' Artemis Cooper, Evening Standard Virginia Nicholson was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and grew up in Yorkshire and Sussex. She studied at Cambridge University and lived abroad in France and Italy, then worked as a documentary researcher for BBC Television. Her books include the acclaimed social history Among the Bohemians - Experiments in Living 1900-1939, and Singled Out - How Two Million Women Survived Without Men after the First World War, both published by Penguin in 2002 and 2007. She is married to a writer, has three children and lives in Sussex.

Excellent read!

As someone who likes to read both fiction and non-fiction about World War 2. I was very excited when to read "Millions Like Us" by Virginia Nicholson and let me say that I was not let down! This is clearly a well reseached book about the lives of women durning the war. I found myself being drawn in the book. The pictures that were included were an added bonus. This a great book that is a must for any history buff and I hope to read more by Ms Nicholson in the future

Not a compilaton of diaries

First of all, this is a very well-written and researched book. I only gave it 3 stars to bring attention to my disappointment that it wasn't the actual diary entries of the women involved. That's strictly my fault for either misunderstanding the description or reading more into it than I should have. It is strictly the war, from start to finish, from the women's point of view, as opposed to the standard histories involving military actions. The author shares what was happening on a national level and combines it with how various women reacted in their hometowns. If you want a well-rounded history of what normal, everyday British women were doing and thinking during a set time period, then this is the book for you. If you're like me and prefer to read individual chapters based on each woman's experience from start to finish, then skip this one.

The shop girls who worked on farms to feed Britain during World War II

This is a largely forgotten story of the tens of thousands of women who went to work on rhe farms to feed Britain in World War II. A miniseries of this book was made recently but it doesn't do justice to the book.

Vivid, visceral, well researched

Vivid, visceral, very readable. This is a brilliantly researched book, and I found the different stories of women on the Homefront (sometimes on the warfront!) fascinating. Thank you, Virginia, for including the story of Helen Forrester. When you read this book, you'll say to yourself, I have noooooo problems at all.
