She is a war refugee, cast out of her home country and thrust into another, where she has learned to fight against the many injustices around her. For some, the Glittering Court offers a chance at a life they’ve only ever dreamed of, one of luxury, glamour, and leisure. But for Mira, it’s simply a means to an end. In the new world, she plans to earn off her marriage contract price, and finally be free.    Mira pitches herself as an asset to one of the passengers on board the ship: the sardonic and aloof Grant Elliot, whom she’s discovered is a spy for the prestigious McGraw Agency—and her ticket to buying her freedom. His cover blown, Grant has little choice but to take her on. Mira applies herself by day, learning the etiquette and customs that will help to earn her anonymity. By night, she dons a mask and slips into the city, fighting injustice and corruption on her own terms—and impressing Grant with her extraordinary abilities and insights into a brewing rebellion. But the rebellion isn’t all they’re fighting…   Neither of them can ignore the attraction burning between them—an attraction so powerful, it threatens to unravel everything Mira’s worked so hard for. With freedom finally within her grasp, can Mira risk it all for love?

Not appropriate for Kids

Not appropriate for kids in my opinion. I suppose I'd say 16/17 and up. At least for our conservative family. It's such a bummer they market books like this to our young children. Could have been a great book for tweens and young teens if they left a few things out. I've attached some photos so you can read some of the parts that concerned me.

Better Than the First, But Forgettable

This novel is better than the first in the series, if only because Mira is a far more likable and interesting character than Adelaide. Grant Elliott is another interesting character - and a far better love interest than Adelaide's love interest in the first novel. Grant is intelligent, sneaky, and full of surprises.

Grant and Mira together and are really good - though they don't get as romantic as I would have liked. Honestly, I'm not totally sure what Grant and Mira were supposed to be doing. I know Mira was spying and gathering information, but it didn't stick with me. Either I read too fast, it was too forgettable, or it wasn't explained well.

The story moves along okay, but felt stiff at times - maybe because a lot of things I had already read about (or had been hinted about in the last novel.) If this were the first novel in the series, I would actually say the story moved too slowly. The ending was a little too fast-paced, but it worked out well.

Overall, the novel is rather forgettable.

Loved

Loved this book. I have been a huge fan of Richelle Mead for years. I was disappointed in Glittering Courts, however I feel as if she redeemed herself with this book.

NOT the same as Book 1

The Glittering Court (book 1) had world building, a journey and just more. It was originally written as a stand alone novel. Midnight Jewel and the 3rd book would be worth reading from your local library if you want more info on the other girls. Midnight Jewel felt more like the Vampire Academy which I did not like! Way too much sexy time and very little story.

Not as good as Glittering Court

Gave up about halfway through, this book repeated several scenes from the Glittering Court (which I thought was fantastic), and just didn’t hold my interest. It would have been better if it picked up from the end of GC instead of starting from about the same time, the only difference being the story was told from Mira’s POV. She wasn’t a memorable character and the romance fell flat for me. Sad this series isn’t as good as the Vampire Academy.

WAY BETTER THAN THE FIRST BOOK!

I liked the first book but there was a lot of boring information toward the end of the beginning and the middle of it. But in the second book all the boring details of life in the manor before they embark are not included.

I love Mira because she’s bolder and responsible and has a sense of adventure. She’s more relatable than Adelaide. She meets Grant who is rugged and a mystery and she figured out he’s a sort of detective and she gets wrapped into his business in hopes of freeing her brother.

She doesn’t really want to marry and no one is serious about marrying her. But she finds a way to have everything she’s ever wanted.

My only complaint is I wish we had met her brother.

Loved it

I just love this series! I loved the GLITTERING COURT, and MIDNIGHT JEWEL didn’t disappoint! The romance between Mira and Grant just kept me on my toes and made me swoon! And Mira herself was a character you can’t but love and cheer for. This book has everything: beautiful dresses, adventure, vigilante pirates, conspiracy and more. I’d definitely recommend reading this series and can’t wait to read the next one!

Nice Story

I really enjoyed listening to this novel via audio recordings. Richelle Mead is extremely talented with her writing and plot planning. I enjoyed learning about Mira and getting details of the story from her life events and perspectives. Certain peaces of the puzzle from the first novel were revealed and explained in the Midnight Jewel. Certain mysteries were added and new puzzles formed. I cannot wait for the third novel, The Emerald Sea, to learn about Tamsin and her story.

I would recommend this book to high school and older. It was entertaining, fun, mysterious, and completely enjoyable.

Happy Reading!
