Chapter One She walked among them undetected, just another afternoon rush-hour commuter trudging through the fresh February snowfall on her way to the train station. No one paid any mind at all to the petite female in the hooded oversized parka, her scarf concealing her face to just below her eyes, which watched the crowds of human pedestrians with keen interest. Too keen, she knew, but she couldn't help it.She was anxious being out among them, and impatient to find her prey. Her head rang with the pound of rock music blaring in through the tiny earbuds of a portable MP3 player. It wasn't hers. It had belonged to her teenage son-to Camden. Sweet Cam, who'd died just four months ago, a victim of the underworld war that Elise herself was now a part of as well. He was the reason she was here, prowling Boston's crowded streets with a dagger in her coat pocket and a titanium-edged blade strapped to her thigh.More than ever now, Camden was the reason she lived. His death could not go unavenged.Elise crossed at a traffic light and moved up the road toward the station. She could see people talking as she passed them, their lips moving silently, their words-more important, their thoughts-drowned out by the aggressive lyrics, screaming guitars, and pulsing throb of bass that filled her ears and vibrated in her bones. She didn't know precisely what she was listening to, nor did it matter. All she needed was the noise, played loud enough and long enough to get her into place for the hunt. She entered the building, just one more person in a river of moving humanity. Harsh light spilled down from fluorescent tubes in the ceiling. The odor of street filth and dampness and too many bodies assailed her nose through her scarf. Elise walked farther inside, coming to a slow pause in the center of the station. Forced to divide around her, the flowing crowd passed on either side, many bumping into her, jostling her in their haste to make the next train. More than one glared as they passed, mouthing obscenities over her abrupt halt in the middle of their path.God, how she despised all of this contact, but it was necessary. She took a steadying breath, then reached into her pocket and turned off the music. The din of the station rushed upon her like a wave, engulfing her with the racket of voices, shuffling feet, the traffic outside, and the metallic grate and rumble of the incoming train. But these noises were nothing compared to the others that swamped her now.Ugly thoughts, bad intentions, secret sins, open hatreds-all of it churned around her like a black tempest, human corruption seeking her out and hammering into her senses. It staggered her, as always, that first rush of ill wind nearly overwhelming her. Elise swayed on her feet. She fought the nausea that rose within her and tried her best to weather the psychic assault.-Such a bitch, I hope they fire her ass--Goddamn hick tourists, why don't you go back where you belong--Idiot! Outta my way, or I'll friggin' knock you flat--So what if she's my wife's sister? Not like she wasn't after me all this time-Elise's breath was coming faster with each second, a headache blooming in her temples. The voices in her mind blended into ceaseless, almost indistinguishable chatter, but she held on, bracing herself as the train arrived and its doors opened to let a new sea of people pour out onto the platform. They spilled around her, more voices added to the cacophony that was shredding her from the inside. -Panhandling losers ought to put the same effort into getting a damn job--I swear, he puts his hand on me one more time, I'ma kill the sumbitch--Run, cattle! Run back to your pens! Pathetic creatures, my Master is right, you do deserve to be enslaved-Elise's eyes snapped wide. Her blood turned to ice in her veins the instant the words registered in her mind. This was the one voice she waited to hear. The one she came here to hunt. She didn't know the name of her prey, or even what he looked like, but she knew what he was: a Minion. Like the others of his kind, he had been human once, but now he was something less than that. His humanity had been bled away by the one he called Master, a powerful vampire and the leader of the Rogues. It was because of them-the Rogues and the evil one guiding them in a growing war within the vampire race-that Elise's only son was dead. After being widowed five years ago, Camden was all she'd had left, all that mattered in her life. With his loss, she'd found a new purpose. An unwavering resolve. It was that resolve she leaned upon now, commanding her feet to move through the thick crowd, searching for the one she'd make pay for Camden's death this time. Her head spun with the continued bombardment of painful, ugly thoughts, but finally she managed to single out the Minion. He stalked ahead of her by several yards, his head covered by a black knit cap, his body draped in a tattered, faded green camouflage jacket. Animosity poured out of him like acid. His corruption was so total, Elise could taste it like bile in the back of her throat. And she had no choice but to stick close to him, waiting for her chance to make her move. The Minion exited the station and headed up the sidewalk at a fast clip. Elise followed, her fingers wrapped tightly around the dagger in her pocket. Outside with fewer people, the psychic blare had lessened, but the pain of overload in the station was still present, boring into her skull like a steel spike. Elise kept her eyes trained on her quarry, picking up her speed as he ducked into a business off the street. She came up to the glass door and peered past the painted FedEx logo to see the Minion waiting in line for the counter."Excuse me, miss," someone said from behind her, startling her with the sound of a true voice, and not the buzz of words that were still filling her head. "You going inside or what, lady?"The man behind her pushed open the door as he said it, holding it for her expectantly. She hadn't intended to go in, but now everyone was looking at her-the Minion included-and it would draw more attention to herself if she refused. Elise strode into the brightly lit business and immediately feigned interest in a display of shipping boxes in the front window. From her periphery, she watched as the Minion waited his turn in line. He was edgy and violent-minded, his thoughts berating the customers ahead of him. Finally he approached the counter, ignoring the clerk's greeting."Pickup for Raines."The attendant typed something into a computer, then hesitated a second. "Hang on." He headed to a back room, only to return a moment later shaking his head. "It hasn't arrived yet. Sorry 'bout that."Fury rolled off the Minion, tightening like a vise around Elise's temples. "What do you mean, 'it hasn't arrived'?""Most of New York got hit with a big snowstorm last night, so a lot of today's shipments have been delayed-""This shit's supposed to be guaranteed," the Minion snarled."Yeah, it is. You can get your money back, but you have to fill out a claim-""Fuck the claim, you moron! I need that package. Now!"My Master will have my ass if I don't turn up with this delivery, and if my ass goes in a sling, I'm going to come back here and rip your goddamn lungs out.Elise drew in her breath at the virulence of the unspoken threat. She knew the Minions lived only to serve the one who made them, but it was always a shock to hear the terrible depth of their allegiance. Nothing was sacred to their kind. Lives meant nothing, be they human or Breed. Minions were nearly as awful as the Rogues, the bloodthirsty, criminal faction of the vampire nation. The Minion leaned over the counter, fists braced on either side of him. "I need that package, asshole. I'm not leaving without it."The clerk backed away, his expression suddenly gone wary. He grabbed the phone. "Look, man, as I've explained to you, there's nothing more I can do for you on this. You're gonna have to come back tomorrow. Right now, you need to leave before I call the police."Useless piece of shit, the Minion growled inwardly. I'll come back tomorrow all right. Just you wait 'til I come back for you!"Is there a problem here, Joey?" An older man came out from the back, all business."I tried to tell him that his stuff ain't here yet on account of the storm, but he won't give it up. Like maybe I'm supposed to pull it out of my a-""Sir?" the manager said, cutting off his employee and pinning the Minion with a serious look. "I'm going to ask you politely to leave now. You need to go, or the police will be called to escort you out of here."The Minion growled something indistinguishable but nasty. He slammed his fist down on the countertop, then whirled around and started stalking away. As he neared the door where Elise stood, he swept over a floor display, sending rolls of tape and bubble packs scattering to the floor. Although Elise stepped back, the Minion was coming too hard toward her. He glared down at her with vacant, inhuman eyes."Get out of my way, cow!"She'd barely moved before he barreled past her and out the door, pushing so hard the glass panes rattled like they were going to shatter."Asshole," one of the patrons still in line muttered once the Minion had gone.Elise felt the wave of relief wash over the other customers at his departure. Part of her was relieved too, glad that no one met with harm. She wanted to wait for a while in the momentary calm in the store, but it was an indulgence she couldn't afford. The Minion was storming across the street now, and dusk was coming fast. She only had half an hour at best before darkness fell and the Rogues came out to feed. If what she did was dangerous in the daytime, at night it was nothing short of suicide. She could slay a Minion with stealth and steel-already had, in fact, more than once-but like any other human, female or not, she stood no chance against the blood-addicted strength of the Rogues.Girding herself for what she had to do, Elise slipped out the door and followed the Minion up the street. He was angry and walking brusquely, slamming into other pedestrians and snarling curses at them as he passed. A barrage of mental pain filled her head as more voices joined the din already clanging in her mind, but Elise kept pace with her target. She hung a few yards behind, her eyes trained on the pale green bulk of his jacket through the light flurry of fresh snow. He swung left around the corner of a building and into a narrow alley. Elise hurried now, desperate not to lose him.Midway down the side street, he yanked open a battered steel door and disappeared. She crept up to the windowless slab of metal, palms sweating despite the chill in the air. His violent thoughts filled her head-murderous thoughts, all the grisly things he would do out of deference to his Master.Elise reached into her pocket to withdraw her dagger. She held it close to her side, poised to strike, but concealed behind the long drape of her coat. With her free hand, she grasped the latch and pulled open the unlocked door. Snowflakes swirled ahead of her into the gloomy vestibule that reeked of mildew and old cigarette smoke. The Minion stood near a bank of mail slots, one shoulder leaning against the wall as he flipped open a cell phone like the ones they all carried-the Minions' direct line to their vampire Master."Shut the fucking door, bitch!" he snapped, soulless eyes glinting. His brows dropped into a scowl as Elise moved toward him with swift, deadly purpose. "What the hell is th-"She drove the dagger hard into his chest, knowing that the element of surprise was one of her best advantages. His anger hit her like a physical blow, pushing her backward. His corruption seeped into her mind like acid, burning her senses. Elise struggled through the psychic pain, coming back to strike him again with the blade, ignoring the sudden wet heat of his blood spilling onto her hand. The Minion sputtered, grasping out for her as he fell against her. His wound was mortal, so much blood she nearly lost her stomach at the sight and smell of it. Elise twisted out of the Minion's heavy lean and leaped out of the way as he fell to the floor. Her breath was sawing out of her lungs, her heart racing, her head splitting in agony as the mental barrage of his rage continued in her mind. The Minion thrashed and hissed as death overtook him. Then, finally, he stilled. Finally, there was silence. With trembling fingers, Elise retrieved the cell phone from where it lay at her feet and slipped it into her pocket. The slaying had drained her, the combined physical and psychic exertion almost too much to bear. Each time seemed to weigh more heavily on her, take longer for her to recover. She wondered if the day would come that she might slide so deep into the abyss that she'd not rebound at all. Probably, she guessed, but not today. And she would keep fighting so long as she had breath in her body and the pain of loss in her heart."For Camden," she whispered, staring down at the dead Minion as she clicked on the MP3 player in preparation of her return home. Music blared from the tiny earbuds, muting the gift that gave her the power to hear the darkest secrets of a human's soul. She'd heard enough for now.Her day's sober mission complete, Elise pivoted around and fled the carnage she'd wrought. Chapter Two The scent of blood carried on the thin, wintry breeze. It was faint, fresh, a coppery tickle in the nostrils of the vampire warrior who leaped soundlessly from the roof of one dusk-shadowed building to another. Snowflakes fell around him like floating white ash, blanketing the city that spread out beneath him some six stories down.Tegan crouched at the ledge and surveyed the tangle of bustling streets and alleyways. As one of the Order-a small cadre of Breed vampires engaged in war against their savage brethren, the Rogues-Tegan's primary nightly objective was dealing death to his enemies. It was something he did with a cold efficiency, a skill perfected during his more than seven centuries of existence. But down to his marrow, he was Breed, and there were none among his kind who could ignore the call of newly spilled human blood. Read more

Absolutely Delightful Read

I have been following this author since the first book and Tegan has to be one of my favorite characters. The lone, stoic, fighter who gets the job done but gives no quarter to emotion. He has totally closed himself down and lives only for justice and vengence.

Tegan lost his breedmate to the Rogues, 500 yrs ago and still he can't forgive them or himself. He feels he should have been there to protect her. The only way he exists is to focus totally on fighting the Rogues who threaten his people. Not that his people really appreciate the men of the Order.

Elise Chase has come to the place Tegan is, her son got hooked on the drug, Crimson, and turned Rogue, he was killed by her brother-in-law right in front of her. Four months later she has left the Darkhaven and is hunting minions with her psychic power. Although she is not able to shut out the many minds pierceing her brain she continues to fight for justice and vengence.

Tegan finds her being attacked by Rogues, he saves her and follows her home where he discovers she is hunting and killing minions by herself. A minion is a human totally belonging to a master vampire. Elise has stumbled on a rare book desperately wanted by Marik, the leader of the Rogues. Rescueing her from the Rogues one more time Tegan takes her to the Order. Everyone is trying to understand the old diary she has found.

All of the people we have met before are here in the story. And all are trying to decifer the verse in the book. More secrets are revealed and Elise demands Tegan help her in the battle by sharing his blood with her. The blood bond between mates in not to be used in this way and there will be a price for her and Tegan.

I loved this one it reminded me of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, I could not put it down and I recommend it highly. I have already pre-ordered the next book in the series. Lots of action, romance and a challanging plot. You do not have to read them in order, each book stands alone, but they are better and you understand more about the main characters if you read them in order.

Five Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies!

MIDNIGHT AWAKENING, book three of The Midnight Breed Series, features Elise Chase, a widowed Darkhaven female, and Tegan, the deadliest warrior of the Order.

Breedmate widow Elise Chase moved out of the Darkhaven enclave after the death of her son Camden. Vowing that he will not have died in vain, Elise uses her gift of hearing people's thoughts in order to stalk and prey upon the Minions of Rogue vampires. She has one focus in mind. Vengeance. She wants to avenge the death of her son and if she has to kill to do it, then she will kill. And for months she does so with outstanding precision until one night her gift's sensory overload is almost too much and Elise is seen leaving the scene of her latest kill. As if her night couldn't get any worse, she runs into a spitting and voracious Rogue bent on her destruction. Her unlikely savior just happens to be the deadliest vampire the Order has to offer. Later, once the battle is over and Elise is once again trying to drown out the thoughts of others, she comes face to face with Tegan and asks him to help her weed out and focus on those thoughts that will help her with her mission. Tegan does the one thing that Elise begs him not to; he refuses.

Tegan, a Gen One vampire, is the toughest and most deadly of the Order. Nightly he battles ruthlessly in the conflict against Rogue vampires and it is on one such night that he sees a small figure leaving the scene of a crime. Stalking the figure's scent, Tegan is led to an alley fight in which he realizes that the woman fighting for her life against a Rogue is none other than Elise Chase, a beautiful Darkhaven widow. Tegan orders Elise home where he follows her once cleanup is complete. Wanting to know why she is no longer within the safety of the Darkhaven, Tegan is surprised when Elise asks for his help to learn self control in dealing with her psychic gifts but not surprised enough to refuse. That is, until he realizes that the gift she possesses is slowly killing her inside.

The two unlikely lovers form an alliance. Each is committed to annihilating the Rogues that prey upon human and vampire alike. So committed in fact that they don't realize how much each will depend on the other for friendship, passion, and the ultimate - love.

Having been hooked on Lara Adrian's writing and this series since the release of Kiss of Midnight, I have been craving MIDNIGHT AWAKENING tremendously. Elise, the stunningly beautiful widow of a Darkhaven vampire, was pampered most of her life and told that vampires of the Order were the worst of vigilantes. I loved how her mind changed when she got to know the warrior that was Tegan. Most importantly, I found her character refreshing. While often times I was scared for her, I knew that Tegan would keep her safe. Ms. Adrian's series just gets better and better with Tegan now as my favorite of the vampire warriors. I found him to be quite realistic. Distrustful of commitment because of his past, Tegan vowed that Elise would mean nothing to him. That is one vow that I liked seeing this hero break. And break it he did - tenfold and quite sensually.

MIDNIGHT AWAKENING was exactly what I hoped it would be and then so much more. I was thrilled to see past heroes and heroines from the two previous books as well as a look at upcoming heroes. Tons of questions were answered and just when I thought I knew where the book would lead, Lara Adrian threw me for a loop and stumped me with the storyline. Intrigued, and without a doubt completely hooked, I am lying in wait for Midnight Rising, the next installment of this series. April 2008 can't get here quick enough.

MIDNIGHT AWAKENING releases from Bantam Dell on November 27, 2007. May I suggest running, not walking to the nearest bookstore and grabbing this book right off the shelf. You will be instantly addicted - I know I was.

This great vampire series continues

"Midnight Awakening" is the third in Lara Adrian's Vampire Breed series and it's another great read. Comparisons with J R Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood books continue, especially as this third book is about the emotionally damaged and loner vampire who finds his match in a damaged woman who no longer feels her place is in the society of her peers (rather like Z and Bella in Lover Awakened). However this story also has many differences, particularly in the locations in which it is set. Most of the action in this book takes place in Berlin and it's clear the author has some familiarity with the city, although I felt there were occasional lapses when the locals seemed to speak English automatically. However overall the change of setting made it an interesting book.

The hero of this book is Tegan, one of the Gen One vampires who are oldest and strongest but also the most liable to go 'rogue' and become bloodlusting dangerous vampires that have to be killed. He connected briefly with Elise, a vampire widow and sister-in-law to Sterling Chase, in the last book. In this book they find themselves meeting again unexpectedly and Tegan is shocked by the situation into which Elise has moved. She has vowed vengeance against the Rogues who killed her son and goes out at night attacking them; Tegan eventually has to take her to the warriors' mansion for her own safety, and it's at that point where they find themselves beginning to connect. When Elise has to come with him to Berlin to follow a lead, their relationship becomes more complex.

Much of the romance aspect of this book sees the characters alternately wanting to be together and wanting to stay apart to protect themselves from the fragility that love can bring. This sometimes felt a little repetitive, especially as various misunderstandings were occasionally engineered that were resolved a page or so later. We were introduced to a new character, a German man named Andreas Reichen, who may well feature in a future book as he was an intriguing person. However the bulk of the story follows the interactions between Tegan and Elise with the other warriors and their mates very much in the background.

The plot moved along reasonably in this story although towards the end it felt perhaps a little rushed. In some ways the 'baddie' was finished off rather easily but this was just to open the story up to the extra layer, the new 'baddie' who is rather badder than the old one! Elise's vengeance also seemed to subside as the book went along and it was unclear by the end whether she'd given it up, handed it over to Tegan or just forgotten about it. Although the story clearly continues, this particular episode finished in an acceptable manner and I found myself looking forward to the continuation of this interesting series. It's not groundbreaking stuff but it's still a good read.

Tame and somewhat dated.

Midnight Awakening reads like an average series romance. Perfunctory is the word I would use to describe it. I cannot believe this novel comes from the same pen what wrote in the lurid tattoo-sucking scene in Kiss of Crimson.

`Widow' romances are rarely much good and this is no exception. The heroine Elise subjects Tegan to one of the most outrageous teases I've ever read. First she comes on to him like she's ready to do the deed. Then at the last moment she changes her mind, runs away, and then comes back to finish the business! I thought her actions at the time almost amounted to the sadistic torture of a guy who admits he hasn't had biblical relations for 500 years. I don't like that kind of thing.

And lookee. The Order has got it's very own groupie, hanger-on. Chase. Just like Butch in the BDB. And he's just as much of a brown-noser. I want him to die. Or be the first Rogue to infiltrate the compound. But I just know he's going to get his own story some time in the future.

As an experienced romance reader I found Midnight Awakening to be such an eeeeasy read. However. Be aware that the story still has the quota of soft-core and violence required by the genre. But not too much of either. Neither is the heroine brutalized by the baddies. I think that's what I found a bit much in Crimson. When Tess got munched by the Rogues. Not to mention the imagery of blood that was thrust into the tattoo-sucking scene. All a bit too much for me. But. Wow! What an imagination on someone's part. Nothing like that in Midnight Awakening. Thank goodness. Sort of.

What is good is the non-romance plot. Something about a book and an ancient alien vampire. Marek gets his just deserts but someone worse is due to take his place. However like so often, the thrills and tension do not make any appearance until well over half way into the book. It was wonderful how all the riddles were solved by the females.

I absolutely did not get the character of Andreas. I kept expecting that continental creep and his floosie to turn bad. He takes up far too much of the novel for what is essentially a cipher role.

Absolutely not a patch on Kiss of Crimson. But perfectly acceptable nonetheless. And it was Tegan who turned out to be a cardboard cutout not Elise. I found it all a bit one-dimensional and...simple.

ADDICTIVE!!!

I must say that after reading this book I see only a vague similarity with the J.R. Ward books (I'm a huge fan of J.R.). For one thing J.R.'s books are sooooo much more intense, heartbreaking. In her books she creates a lot of conflict but the characters always immediately know they are bonded to one another.
In Midnight Awakening Lara Adrian has conflict throughout the book and keeps the reader guessing whether the lovers are just lovers instead of soul mates. Her writing is also very different, she seems to spend an equal amount of time with the hero and heroine while J.R.'s books focus nearly half the book on secondary characters, fight scenes and the enemy. I am a fan of both authors and think this series is definitely up there in my top favorite three (J.R., Lara Adrian and Kathryn Smith)!!!

Best of the Breeds

I have read all four of the Midnight Breed books that are out so far, but out of order, and think that this is the very best of the bunch. They are all good, but Tegan is just such a luscious damaged hero! And Elise is so cool and spunky, despite her own painful past. Adrian did an excellent job of developing the attraction between these two wounded souls who have no interest in falling in love. And she shows enough of the other Breeds to stay connected with their stories, without neglecting her principal pair. This one goes on my keeper shelf, and I look forward to what LA offers readers next.

worth the wait!!

I loved this story. Teagan and Elise were one of my favorite couples.
I wanted the story to go on forever. If you love J.R. Ward you will like these books. My only complaint is the books aren't published fast enough.
It had been so long since Kiss of Midnight. I kinda forgot the storyline. Can't wait for Midnight Rising.

Healing old wounds

The Story
Elise saw her rouge son killed infront of her eyes four months ago. She is now on a vendetta against the rouges and minions. Elise has been hunting and killing. One night she is out too late and is caught by a couple of rouges. Tegan comes to her rescue, unable to help himself he follows Elise to her new apartment. She has left the Darkhavens and now her gift is making her suffer. She has the ability to hear dark thoughts from humans. Tegan has a similar ability, but he has been practicing his apathy for centuries. These two are both wounded people by this war. Elise turns to Tegan for help and relief with her gift. Elise intercepts a package from a minion and it sends her and Tegan on a mission.

Thoughts
Tegan spends most of the book ignoring his feelings for Elise. Their connection is evident, these two are perfect for each other. They help heal each other from their sorrows. The book is fast paced. This one is more about the plot than the romance I think. Nevertheless, Tegan and Elise grow in this book. The plot thickens and is set up for the next book. Rio's book I believe. This isn't my favorite, but it is a good addition to the series.

Awakening works for me

I've read all in the series and Midnight Awakening is hands down a favorite. First and foremost, Elise is already clued into the breed world as she was a breedmate for years, so we don't have to skim our way through the perfunctory explanation, not to mention, the usual shock and doubt scenes that follow. That wears ... I suppose this is why I enjoyed Veil of Midnight, as well.

Adrian nails it with Tegan's character. The frighteningly strong, aloof guy with the haunting past ... And although Adrian attempts this with all her male leads, something just works with Tegan. Elise is a fantastic counterpart: intelligent, self-assured, capable (minus her 'gift' situation), and beautiful. She has clout and a long history in the breed community, which is refreshing to read. I would also like to add that I LOVED the fact that she has short hair! Thank you Ms. Adrian for writing a beautiful character who isn't sporting the long flowing locks.

Now Midnight Breed is starting to happen

The Midnight Breed series is something that requires patience.

On the first book you get a rough story, with not much of a plot line and lots of unexplained details. The heroine, Gabrielle, is nothing interesting, the conflicts are not well justified and the hero's nine hundred years of past are just boring.

The second book gets a little better. The heroine is more charming with a better constructed past, an amazing breedmate ability but still a little annoying. Dante, the hero, is less conflicted, more practical and just provides a better story than the first.

In the end of the second installment, it's clear to anyone that the bland Elise would be paired with the strong and mysterious Tegan.

After two books that featured a great idea poorly explored and the promise of a dull heroine you think to give up, I know I did, but hold on just a little. The third book is a surprise for those with patience to get to it.

I thought that Elise would never serve for a good heroine in the delicate way she's presented first, blushing for a stronger draft of air and shocked by any foul language. Boy, was I wrong?

Elise is so far the best heroine in the series: courageous, practical and mature. She's not a super woman, she has her flaws, some insecurities but nothing overplayed and all perfectly normal to a woman in her position. She's also one of the few heroines I've ever read who's stubborn without being stupid - this is an amazing achievement for the author, most don't get the difference.

Tegan is just as interesting as he's supposed to be: an idol to anyone watching his warrior skills, haunted by his past and seething with the idea of getting involved with a female.

This plot line is the best one as well, efficiently built and engaging. Adrian manages to explain some things left from the past stories, adding important details to the series as a whole and finally creates a captivating mystery. It's also the first one you don't get excessive pages of doubts and the main characters thinking of insignificant problems that won't get them anywhere. In this one they are either facing something important for the Order or doing something about their relationship, even if it's fighting. Great betterment.

I believe Adrian is getting more into the story as she goes, considering more details and how they'll develop further in the plot. There are still details thrown in the mix that end up insignificant in the end or just forgotten, like the relationship between Elise and Chase. It was an important part of the second book, it shows up on this one but nothing really happens, not even a conversation meaningful enough to be thought as closure. I thought the battle in the end was a bit of an anti-climax, surely after everything that drove to that moment it could have been at least more detailed. I still maintain my opinion that Adrian could use a bit more of description on her scenes, most places they go are just left to the reader to invent how they want it to be. It's an option some authors choose but when creating a whole fantastic society, you should expect a bit more of a guideline. As I said before about the other books, I'm still trying to figure out how a Darkhaven looks like.

Apart from that I was pleasantly surprised with this book, either if it was for lack of expectations or for it's betterment I can't really say, but I suspect this series is heading to be a good one.
