Someone was bound to go after Michael Moore eventually and this book holds nothing back. An immensely popular figure to political left-wingers, Michael Moore presents himself as a regular working-class guy in a baseball cap with the courage to take some rich and powerful folks to task for their corrupt and deceitful ways. David T. Hardy and Jason Clarke say this populist, muckraker image is pure whitewash. Believing that this charade has gone on for too long, and done too much damage to the U.S., they have written this book to expose Moore as narcissistic and irresponsible and his body of work "as manipulative as totalitarian propaganda." To prove their point, they pick apart Moore's books and movies to illustrate how he is consistently manipulative, dishonest, and, at times, simply absurd. They show how he altered the timeline of Roger and Me in order to unfairly blame things on General Motors that happened before their layoffs, not as a result of them. Regarding Bowling for Columbine , the authors explain how he took quotes out of context and reassembled them to give the impression that people made speeches they did not make---most famously his interview with Charlton Heston, then president of the NRA. They also illustrate how Moore manipulated statistics in his books Dude, Wherex92s My Country and Stupid White Men to fit his theories, making some truly outrageous claims in the process. The authors have certainly done their homework, and it's impossible to view Moore's work the same way after reading this book. "How does a man with so many contradictions manage to blind his enormous trove of followers to how hypocritical he really is? How does he get away with it?" they ask. If the authors have their way, he won't much longer. Now that Moore has joined the ranks of the rich and powerful, Hardy and Clarke have engaged in bit of muckraking of their own. --Shawn Carkonen After ten years of service as an attorney with the U.S. Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., David T. Hardy returned to Tucson, Arizona, where he has handled everything from death penalty appeals to First Amendment cases. He is the creator of Mooreexposed.com. Jason Clarke has been at different times a telemarketer, proofreader, and an unemployed American. He is currently a website developer and writer living in New England. He founded Moorelies.com following the 2003 Academy Awards, and has since become one of the loudest voices answering Michael Moore's every public outburst.
Features & Highlights
Watching Michael Moore in action—passing off manipulating facts in
Bowling for Columbine
, spinning statistics in
Stupid White Men
and
Dude, Where's My Country?
, shamelessly grandstanding at the Academy Awards, and epitomizing the hypocrisy he's made a king's fortune railing against—has spurred authors David T. Hardy and Jason Clarke to take action into their own hands. In
Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man
, Hardy and Clarke dish it back hard to the fervent prophet of the far left, turning a careful eye on Moore's use of camera tricks and publicity ploys to present his own version of the truth.
Postwar documentarians gave us the documentary, Rob Reiner gave us the mockumentary, and Moore initiated a third genre, the crockumentary.
How, they ask, does Moore pull off a proletarian, "man-of-the-people" image so at odds with his lifestyle as a fabulously wealthy Manhattanite? And how large of an impact do his incendiary, ill-founded polemics have on the growing community that follows him with near-religious devotion? Loaded with well-researched, solidly reasoned arguments, and laced with irreverent wit,
Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man
fires back at one of the left's biggest targets—politically and literally.

Calm Down People
After readeing a sample of other reviews, I can't believe the venom in the attacks of those who disliked this book. Half the people who gave it one star don't even mention the book, just Bush's evil plans and the universal low IQs of all conservatives. Draw your own conclusions from that I guess.
Onto the book. I'll admit isn't a masterpiece by any strech. It's basically comprised of a number of chapters by the authors which are rehased from their websites, interspaced with third-party essays. While the writing is average at best, the information is all very interesting. I don't understand how people criticize the author's "fact checking" when the majority of thier case consists of fact checking Moore's work. Moore seems to be allowed to make any claims he wants, but when someone finds an inconsistancy suddenly they need to be held to the strictest rigors of research. The book appears to be very well researched and I would challenge any impartial reader to come away with a different impression.
Everyone who sees Farenheit 9/11 should be required to read this book for the same reason Moore supporters say everyone should see the movie: it offers another opinion of a man who has been irrationly idealized by his supporters and demonized by his detractors.

Good book, exposes the trainwreck that is Michael Moore
For starters, this book does an important service. It calls out Moore's many lies and editing tricks to misrepresent issues and people. From there, after it sets the record straight it debunks them one by one. For that it should be praised.
Secondly, what does the right have to fear? Fear, thats the wrong word. More applicable maybe that there is concern mindless people will buy into Moore's intellectual hash without even thinking about the issue beyond what Moore presents. Its important when someone puts out blatant propaganda that it be called out and responded to. If it sits too long in the public arena some people will believe it hook line and sinker.
Thirdly, Its ironic that Mr Moore while railing against the US capitalist system does use it to his own advantage. Maybe to the English reviewer that doesn't bother you. To me it does seem odd if one bashes a capitalist system - they below the radar use it to get wealthy. You'd think if Moore were honest in that belief he'd be living in Europe in a small apartment. However, ethics and logic aren't a fixture in Moore's life and propaganda.
Finally to the people who will chalk this up to right wing cashing in on his name. Sure, money is in the equation. Its not the primary reasoning for this books existance. Many people see Moore for what he is - A propagandist who throws out outrageous theories, goes around Europe bashing his own country and most viciously in his films using quotes and editing tricks to take comments out of context to represent what he wants to show - not what the truth is.
In closing, I'll offer one theory about Mr Moore. I think he appeals to the hard left extremist who loves to see him "give it to Bush" or "give it to the arrogant imperialist Americans" who has never grown up or been able to hold a real job in society. The types that live off government grants to shove thier agenda down your throat - those types.
The young skulls of unthinking neurons and perennial losers buy into his tripe. Those who never realized in the US its up to you to succeed - not what the government does for you.
I love the fact that when Moore had a real job, he only lasted one day. Says something there.

Great and Truthful Book
I had been having some of these same thoughts about Michael Moore and the "truthfulness" of his movies that are presented and discussed in this book. Michael Moore's movies certainly are not documentaries. They are funny and he is talented, but I think the power of the buck has clouded his integrity and decimated his moral compass. I was doing some of my own research into what he has presented because when I watched his movies, there were a lot of stories, scenes that just didn't jive. Sure enough, there is a lot of manipulation and just plain lies in his movies, that I had found out from other sources before I discovered this book. I just finished reading this book, I didn't even know it existed until a couple of days ago. I just happened to see it in a book store. So it has been pretty interesting to read, and confirming information that I had already discovered on my own. Which doesn't mean I'm smart, it just means it isn't that hard to seek out the truth. The authors present many facts that contradict the info in MM's movies and put a lot of holes in MM's theories. The sources are listed in the back of the book, so you can go check and verify for yourself. I am just totally blown away by how many people actually believe the movies that Michael Moore has produced and actually think that the movies are documentaries!!!! It is very scarey. Based on some previous reviews made here, I think when you are looking at movies Michael Moore has made, and he puts so much of himself and his views and his propaganda into the movie and has changed and manipulated facts, and then appears to claim or present them as documentaries or truth, then you must, you absolutely must, look at the person who has produced them. For example, if Hitler produced a movie, if God produced a movie, if the Pope produced a movie, if Mother Theresa produced a movie, if John Kerry produced a movie, and each one was trying to promote their own agenda, wouldn't you take the person who produced the movie into consideration and do an intelligent analysis and evaluation before deciding whether the movie was truthful, fictional, a documentary, whatever. I think this book makes some very good points and of course, the authors have their own agenda, but this is a must read and folks, there is no camera magic being performed here. As related to Michael Moore, I just hope Abraham Lincoln was right, "you can fool all the people some of the time, you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

Exposing Moore's lies
I would recommend this book for any American who is overcome with nausea every time an uninformed friend or relative fires off a quote from Moore's bestseller Stupid Whire Men or calls Bowling for Columbine a masterpiece. In this book, author's Hardy and Clarke go for the throat with documented facts (Moore could learn a thing or two), and point out the mis-truths, half-truths and out right lies in Moore's books and movies. Still more amusing and interesting are the authors efforts to show the reader the real Moore: A self riteous, libelous and angry man who produces vitriolic leftist propoganda and refuses to acknowledge his critics -- choosing instead to spew out conspiracy theories and lawsuits everytime his work is challenged.
Hardy and Clarke may find that they are preaching to the choir with their critique of Moore's work and character and their blow by blow analysis of his 'documentaries,' but they hit the nail on the head and should be commended for their guts (as Moore has loudly threatened legal action against his 'wacko attackos').
Disregard the criticism in the previous posts. Its doubtful the critics have read the book. If they did they'd have to take a long look in the mirror as this book exposes Moore and his blind followers for the true, lying, whiny malcontents that they are.
Final word: Buy the book. Its a very well researched and written critique of America's foremost blowhard.

Solid evidence for the rest of the story
First I think it needs to be said that the title of this book is inappropriate and uncalled for. It is an obvious play on Moore's own attempts at degrading and insulting others in his book "Stupid White Men". That said, it is simply unfortunate the authors here chose to dig a hole down to Moore's level because the information and facts in this book are too important to be dismissed because of the insulting book title. I fear that the factual information will not be read by those who are turned off by the title. I have enjoyed some of Moore's work, and in fact gave "Downside This" a favorable review here, but Moore obviously has some issue with his tactics, which are exposed in this book.
In regards to the book content, it is excellent. I am sure by now that everyone knows Michael Moore is far from the "man of the people" he pretends to be. He is a very wealthy member of the celebrity circles, owns more than one million dollar home, and in fact is quite smug about his wealth. He charges up to 30k to speak out about the perils of wealthy, white men, which in a twist of irony he seems unaware of - he is. In fact several Moore quotes show a man who is overtly arrogant about his wealth and how he has become rich while other journalists are struggling by "playing by the rules".(page 120).
In regards to his films and books, it is unfortunate he falsifies information to the extent he does. I think that he makes some good points. In "Bowling for Columbine" I agreed with his stance on gun control, yet he wasn't content with facts, he had to lie and misrepresent the truth to get there. For example, in one sequence he makes the claim that the young men who murdered their classmates did so while local corporation Lockheed-Martin rolled weapons of mass destruction through the streets. Well, not quite. Lockheed makes satellite rockets for placing satellites in space. (Page 87). What is even more disturbing is that this information was known, and filmed at the time, yet edited out.
In "Roger and Me" Moore commits one of his favorite tactics. He goes with a film crew outside of the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, and a Yacht club in Michigan to try and film GM President Roger Smith. However, it was known to Moore that Smith had never stayed at the Waldorf and is not even a member of the Yacht Club, so obviously he wouldn't be filmed there. (Page 25) This tactic Moore uses often to try and paint a picture that is patently false and misrepresents the truth - deliberately. A bigger surprise for me is the quote from Moore that he doesn't even drive GM cars, preferring foreign cars! This is hardly the man of the people who took on a major corporation for laying off its workers at the GM plant in Flint Michigan, when the result of his own consumer choices places their jobs at risk.
In "Fahrenheit 911" he commits yet another series of misrepresentations. I even know some people who are otherwise quite smart and level headed who were taken in by Moore's tactics. He claims that the Bush family has ties to the Bin Laden family. (Page 129). I would hope so. The Bin Laden family is huge, something like 50 or so sons. They are one of the wealthiest and most influential in Saudi and lean heavily towards the west and America. Having long since disowned "Osama" (who considers them all to be traitors to Islam) they are allies to our cause in the Middle East. He claims that Bush invited the Taliban government to Texas. Well in fact it was President Clinton who authorized and endorsed the visit, and Clinton who was supporting a pipeline which would have benefited the Taliban, while Bush opposed it. (Page 177). There are too many other discrepancies to count.
Overall, the book is full of factual and well documented information, though often redundant, and mean-spirited in its presentation. There are hundreds of Moore's lies and mistruths uncovered and exposed. While this may align to Moore's own style itself, I expected better from them, therefore only three stars. The index itself is worth reviewing. If you are a fan of Moore's then continue to admire his talent in making fictional films to make his own self serving political points, but educate yourself on the truth behind his claims to better decide these issues for yourself.

Literary toilet paper
Oh, come now! Is this the best these Bush lackeys can offer? One has to wonder if Michael Moore hadn't achieved the heights associated with his searing film, "Fahrenheit 9/11," would Hardy and Clarke have anything to write about. But hey, like typical conservatives, I guess they saw a buck to be made. Granted, I don't always agree with Moore. I think he's at times abrasive and a little too personal on certain issues, but there's no denying his patriotism and his dogged plight for the everyman. So I went to the nearest bookstore on my lunchbreak, chuckled at the lack of imagination regarding the book title, and proceeded to read, hoping for a good laugh. Bar none, the funniest book I've read this year (for you humorless conservaties, that's sarcasm). What struck me about this drivel is the total lack of any referencing material to back up it's limitless accusations. Hold on... I had to flip through the book to make sure because I still couldn't believe it. But yes, no referencing material. No footnotes, no index... Instead the book is written in a He Said, She Said style which just doesn't cut it, especially when confronted with facts. But, perhaps the funniest line in the book goes, "How does a man with so many contradictions"...*cough*...*Bush*..."manage to blind his enormous trove of followers to how hypocritical he really is? How does he get away with it?" Hmmm, perhaps the authors should ask themselves that question.

This is PRICELESS
I haven't read the book yet but I'm sure it will be very intresting. Moore has gone far to long without someone questioning his credability. I am sick and tired of people not confronting him on the parts that have been proven to be stanged in "Columnbine". And this new piece if propaganda (9/11 movie) has already been pulled apart by people who actually think. Read Christopher Hitchens piece. Bush bashers are even smashing into each other over this film. Mike Moore said one thing and then Richard Clarke said another thing. There is so much hatred for Bush the Bush bashers are saying opposite things. And for the other reviewer who said it was disgusting that the book is making fun of Moore's weight, go talk to Rush Limbaugh and ask him how he felt when Al Franken published a book calling him a "big fat idiot".

Thoughtful and intelligent
What is really sad is that Moore even needs debunking. I would have thought Americans are more intelligent. Moore has turned lying into a cash cow. Since the left wing laps this stuff up, it's only fair that a dose of reality is injected into the debate, and this book delivers reality in large doses. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Awesome depiction of the truth behind deceit!
Michael Moore may use his high-priced legal team to sue me. he already threatened me once elsewhere. So I have to stay anonymous. In any case, Michael Moore is an incredible hypocrit. While I was cleaning the ashes off my apartment window after 9/11, he was enjoying his very rich existence which allows him to enjoy the tax cuts he can manage thanks to his accountantd and extremely high tax bracket. Dontcha just love the hypocrisy?
Anyway, if you don't want to be part of the brainless herd, if you want to question what media figures feed us, read this book. You may disagree. You may agree. But you'll be working to form your own opinion. Something Michael Moore repeatedly tells our friends in Europe and Japan that we Americans are totally incapable of doing.

Moore fair and balanced?
Michael Moore is in Florida ostensibly to prevent any "foul play." A voter after being harrassed and after contacting the sheriff's dept when ahead and contacted Michael Moore's people. They were ecstatic to hear about harrassment against Florida voters untill they foud out that the harrassed voter was a republican. The Moore rep responded "You're a republican!" like to was some dire disease. Te tone was they only wanted complaints about republicans not from them.
In lake county, Fl., police had to be called when anti-Bush people were harrassing voters at the polls and passing out anti-Bush literature. Some people with Bush/Cheney bumper stickers on their cars had their tires slashed.
Moore people couldn't have cared less. Michael Moore fair and balanced? Yeah he is in great physical shape too.
