Description

From Publishers Weekly Would-be mothers looking for precise, accurate information from a reputable source will appreciate this mammoth pregnancy guide from the celebrated Mayo Clinic. The volume actually provides much more information than most parents will need: week by week accounts of the babyx92s development, entries on how pregnancy can be affected by dozens of previous health conditions (such as HIV and diabetes), self-care tips for side effects like nausea and back pain, sidebars that explain the difference between identical and fraternal twins, etc. But the book contains at least one feature that most pregnant women will find indispensable: charts that indicate how to handle "troublesome signs and symptoms" during each three week period. For example, if a woman has slight spotting during the first four weeks of pregnancy, the chart tells her to notify a doctor during her next hospital visit. But if she has any bleeding at all during weeks 29 to 32, the chart indicates that she should tell her doctor immediately. Another stellar feature is the bookx92s even-handed series of "decision guides," which help parents make those hard (and even guilt-inducing) choices about breastfeeding, circumcision and whether or not to go back to work. Some parents may find the bookx92s cool, no-nonsense tone intimidating, or even scary, but when deciding what to do about mid-term cramps or pain, most readers will find great reassurance this volumex92s carefully vetted facts. It grew from the medical practice of a country doctor, William Worrall Mayo, and the partnership of his two sons, William J. and Charles H. Mayo #150; affectionately known as Dr. Will and Dr. Charlie. The brothers' innovative ideas and tireless work in learning and creating new surgical techniques attracted international attention. Physicians from around the world came to watch the Mayo brothers perform surgery. The Mayo brothers invited other doctors to join them, forming teams of medical experts. Today, Mayo Clinic #150; one of the world#146;s oldest and largest multispecialty group practices #150; comprises more than 45,000 physicians, scientists, nurses and other staff at its three locations in Rochester, Minn., Jacksonville, Fla., and Scottsdale, Ariz., and its regional community-based health care practices. To the point

The "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy" is a very clear cut and honest look at pregnancy. It does not pander to any fads or trends but reports actual issues that can occur and gives an honest look into what to expect. It won't tell you where or how to find the best pregnancy pants or give any frivolous thoughts on any of the subjects. Yet when you need to know what to expect health wise about your pregnancy, what changes at what times will normally occur, and statistical facts about what can go on, then this is the book for you. After reading all the garbage on the internet about fears based on very little study I was frightened about what my real chances of issues were. This book is frank and informs people based on decades of experience and study on the issue of pregnancy. I've stopped reading all the new articles about pregnancy as most of the information seems more than a little hysterical compared to the down to earth discussions that this book has.

Excellent pregnancy resource!

I am a Registered Nurse and I bought this book for my daughter-in-law for her first pregnancy because it is well-organized, thorough and a wealth of information for the expectant mother. My dtr-n-law called me several times telling me how much help and reassurance this book was.

Excellent guide and resource

When I became pregnant with my first child, who is now 6 weeks old, I quickly bought 5 books on pregnancy, including the controversial 'What to Expect.' :) (I am an avid reader as well as someone who likes to become 'expert' on whatever situation I may find myself in.) This book was far and away the best book I got. It had a section for each month and week of the pregnancy, which was really helpful - none of the symptoms, however weird, snuck up on me - I knew what was coming. I also looked forward to reading and re-reading the info for whatever week I was at. (Oh, the anticipation of pregnancy!) The 'decision guides' were interesting and informative, and the reference section was easy to use, and very helpful when it came to talking about potential complications without terrifying the expectant mother. And yes, it is much more well organized than 'What to Expect.' I also found it included a couple of tidbits and conditions that the other books I got didn't mention. And of course I really liked that it was from the Mayo Clinic. I totally recommend this book - again, it was the best book I bought about pregnancy. My sister just became pregnant and I am sending her a copy too (but saving my copy for myself,) that's how much I liked it!

Best Pregnancy Book

As a first time mother, I purchased several pregnancy books including this one. 'The Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy' is by far the best. I had always thought that 'What to Expect When Expecting' was "The" pregnancy book, but it pales in comparison to this one. This is the one that I took to the hospital and kept reading even after the baby came. Its the most informative and user friendly. I have been recommending this book to every new mom.

Very informative

Terrific for medical questions, diet suggestions, any concerns while you're pregnant. Also the Mayo Clinic in the title instills a sense of confidence that the information will be accurate and well-researched. Highly recommend this book to expectant mothers and their families.

Yeah for Mayo

Yes buy this item, it gives you awesome medical advice and wisdom for your pregnancy. I would also buy an additional book like "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" because this book doesn't give you a the full picture of what you should eat and other practical advice. A friend of mine and I were prego together. She had this book, I had the other so we shared info with each other that we wouldn't have known without these talks over coffee. So my advice, buy both books and avoid "What to Expect..." at all costs. It is sooooo negative and dramatic. Who needs drama while you are pregnant. This should be a time for excitement!

Great Book

This book is great and very informative. I read it as well as "What to Expect When You're Expecting". This book is slightly better, and also includes information not covered in other books. I would recommend this book mostly to first time moms, since it answered alot of my questions during my first pregnancy.

Fabulous and Informative!

I got this book when I was pregnant with my daughter. I also got Your Pregnancy Week By Week. Both were fabulous. I could read about what was going on and understand, with out the fear of What to expect, which I thought was a crappy book. I have talked with many friends and they too were frieghtened by what to expect, so I loaned out this book, and information without the fear. It is easy to understand, easy to find answers, and reassuring. Definitely worth your money! This is one that I want back for my second pregnancy!!
