PRAISE FOR MARC DAVIS IN HIS OWN WORDS #1 of "19 great coffee table books for Disney fans"― Business Insider PRAISE FOR MARC DAVIS IN HIS OWN WORDS One of "20 Books Every True Disney Fan Should Have in Their Collection"― POPSUGAR PRAISE FOR MARC DAVIS IN HIS OWN WORDS "The Disney Publishing team did a fantastic job at reproducing and printing Davis' work; it really is visually stunning. As far as content, what better way to learn from a master than in their own words? It's a wonderful opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at what went into all those classic Disney attractions."― Business Insider PRAISE FOR WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS-THE ARCHIVE SERIES: WALT DISNEY'S NINE OLD MEN-THE FLIPBOOKS "This pet project of UP director Pete Docter is among the more unique book concepts, and pays tribute to the work of the Nine Old Men in the best way possible: by displaying scenes their animation work. Amazingly, none of the Nine Old Men's full animation scenes have been made available to the public before, which makes this both a valuable historical and educational project. There's no better choice than Docter to spearhead the project; he's a big fan of the flipbook format and creates a flipbook ever year as his personal Christmas card."― Cartoon Brew PRAISE FOR WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS-THE ARCHIVE SERIES: WALT DISNEY'S NINE MORE OLD MEN-THE FLIPBOOKS "Docter doesn't make a big deal about his knowledge of the art form, but he is a first-class historian."― Cartoon Brew Pete Docter is an American film director, animator, and screenwriter from Bloomington, Minnesota. He is best known for directing Inside Out, Monsters, Inc. , and Up and as a key figure and collaborator in Pixar Animation Studios. The A.V. Club has called him "almost universally successful." He has been nominated for six Oscars (two wins thus far for Up and Inside Out- Best Animated Feature), three Annie Awards (two wins), a BAFTA Children's Film Award (which he won), and a Hochi Film Award (which he won). He has described himself as a "geeky kid from Minnesota who likes to draw cartoons."Southern California native Christopher Merritt has more than twenty years of attraction and show design experience creating theme park attractions and environments around the world as an art director and production designer at theme parks located in California, Florida, Tokyo, Singapore, and Shanghai. Chris is the author of a Knott's Berry Farm pictorial history, Knott's Preserved (2010) and Pacific Ocean Park: The Rise and Fall of Los Angeles' Space Age Nautical Pleasure Pier (2014). Chris spent countless hours with Marc Davis (and Alice Davis)-both learning from the masters and documenting history. Chris is currently at work at Walt Disney Imagineering as lead show designer for the Tokyo DisneySea version of the Frozen attraction.

Features & Highlights

  • Award-winning filmmaker Pete Docter and veteran Walt Disney Imagineer Christopher Merritt share a deluxe two-book slip-cased set celebrating Disney Legend Marc Davis. The hefty volumes showcase Marc's mostly unseen Disney theme park concept art and offer a unique behind-the-scenes view as told through Marc's own words.
  • On February 16, 1962, senior animator Marc Davis officially transitioned from Walt Disney Feature Animation to a new division of the company: a group assembled to design Walt's new theme park. After thirty-plus years animating classic Disney features, Marc would become one of the most renowned of Walt Disney's new breed of employee-Imagineers.Marc would become a driving force behind the designs of many of the most iconic park attractions. Pirates of the Caribbean, The Haunted Mansion, it's a small world, Jungle Cruise, Country Bear Jamboree, and many others feature environments and storylines that were heavily influenced by his conceptual artwork. Featuring work from the sixties through the eighties, this two-volume set includes more than 1,500 pieces from the Imagineering archives, the vast majority of which have never been published. In addition, for the first time Marc's design theories as well as many of his stories of working with Walt are featured in his own words as recorded during hours upon hours of interviews by author Chris Merritt.

Should you get this?

Should I keep this? Mmm, not sure. It’s a lil pricey. Well...let open up and take a look...I mean I already have that other Marc Davis book...right, lets see...I’ll check out book 1 and we will just see. Mmm hmm, yup, a few more pages, just gonna flip thru a lil bit, yup...yup...yup.. my chest is getting all warm where my heart is and I can’t stop smiling...I’m happier...and inspired. This is like a trip to the Disney Archives. I’m still not sure if I’ll keep it it, but to give myself enough time to decide i plan on being buried with it.

O and there is a bit about his history and animation career in the beginning.

End.

A visually stunning look at the amazing work of Marc Davis!

This is one of the best books about Imagineering I've seen (and I have a pretty extensive collection). This is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in understanding how Imagineering and theme park design works. I'd also recommend it to serious fans of the Disney theme parks.

This is the most detailed volume of an Imagineer I have ever seen.

I got “Marc Davis in His Own Words: Imagineering the Disney Theme Parks” as a Father’s Day gift for my father, pictured here, since he is quite a fan of both Disney Animation and the Disney Theme Parks. When he opened it up we had no idea of the attention to detail and the quite stunning amount of photographs/original artwork that is present in the two-volume set. This impressive set covers Marc Davis’ second career at WDC as an imagineer who literally was a driving force behind the creation of so many second and third generation Disney attractions, especially in the field of audioanimatronics, with such timeless attractions as Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, America Sings, the Country Bear Jamboree, and the addition of audioanimatronics to the Matterhorn. Imagineering fans, Disney Theme Park fans, and fans of Disney history, would do themselves a huge favor and scrape the coin together to purchase and treasure this set for a lifetime of discovery and wonder.

MUST HAVE title for professional and amateur theme park scholars alike

Wow. As someone who studies theme park design professionally, there is a TON of never-before published imagery. Also, the quotes throughout are from the author's personal interviews with Marc Davis, and provide plenty of new insights, even if you already have the "Renaissance Man" volume from a few years back, or have already read the various interviews in Persistence of Vision or The "E" Ticket.

This book is a MUST BUY if you study this stuff.

A must have set of books for any student of Disney

Marc Davis, along with John Hench were, perhaps more than any other Disney artists, responsible for preserving Walt Disney's vision/look for his theme parks. Pixar director/animator Pete Docter and writer Christopher Merritt have created what is perhaps the finest, most thorough set of books on a Disney animator/imagineer. After 25-plus years as a Disney animator (one of the "Nine Old Men") Davis switched gears and became an imagineer for his second act. I knew of his involvement with the designs of the Pirates and Mansion rides. I had no idea just how far his art and influence reached into dozens of other Disneyland and Walt Disney World park attractions. These books are beautifully written and illustrated. There are photos and pieces of Davis's art I had never before seen. This is a must-have. This two-volume set will not always be available. Someday, it will be on Ebay at five or six times the cost. I recommend to any Disney/Davis fan to not miss this opportunity.

Wonderful Books

A wonderful behind the scenes look of the concepts and designs that the Disney theme parks are known and loved for. No issues with my copies/no missing or messed up pages.

This is a fantastic book. Quality control was another case entirely.

The two volume set is absolutely incredible. But I can't give it as many stars as I'd like because of the damage.
I was really excited to get this book and I poured over the first volume. Things came up and I didn't touch volume 2 until after Christmas. I finally got a chance to read through it only to discover bad printing on the binding and mechanical tears right down the middle of two pages. Unfortunately I can't return it to get a new one (it took me too long to discover the issues), but buyer beware.

Disappointment Strikes!

Loved the book—yet....I received it sealed from Amazon directly and four pages look to have been shredded and ripped in half and out!

Suppose to be "NEW" item arrived Damaged

The books are amazing, however, I purchased as New and they arrived damaged, corners smashed in and the binding broken in places.
