Features & Highlights

  • An incredible 30,000 flights -- at least -- arrive safely at their destinations every day. But a handful don't, while some come terrifyingly close to crashing. When even the smallest thing does go wrong at 35,000 feet, the result is nearly always a fast-unfolding tragedy. This extensive collection of compelling real-life accounts of air disasters and near-disasters provides a sobering, alternative history of the just over 105 years that passengers have been traveling by air, from the very earliest fatality to recent calamities. But there are incredible stories of heroism against the odds, too, such as that of Captain Chesley Sullenberger who successfully landed his aircraft with both engines gone on the Hudson River in New York, saving the lives of everyone aboard, and of the American Airlines crew who prevented terrorist Richard Reid from exploding a bomb hidden in his shoe three months after 9/11. The book also details the often ingenious, always painstaking work done by air-accident investigators, while a glossary helps to clarify the occasional, inevitable bits of jargon.

Still there is NO HIGHWAY IN THE SKY !

With a loveable title like that.... A must-read book that should be in the pouch behind every airplane seat in the world, for people like me who hate flying. Lots of cases of Suspicions Confirmed. Two planes just collided over San Diego today. Many years ago I had just ended commuting between San Diego and Berkeley when a jet and a student's plane collided over North Park. I came within days of being on that airliner. In Hawaii, as I was boarding an island-hop jet with my family, I noticed cracks in the aluminum around the doorway and pointed them out to a stewardess, who probably did NOT tell the pilot. That was the same plane that broke open and just made it back to the airport, minus one stewardess. Now I feel like Jimmy Stewart in NO HIGHWAY IN THE SKY. (I love that movie!) I my life so far, I count that I have been within a mile of 5 airplane crashes. No wonder I got paranoid. Okay, read me the statistics again about the relative safety of autos and airplanes. At least a car can be pulled over to the side of the road when something fails.

This book has a lot of short chapters and gives an overview of each disaster. I read a chapter or two between other books. It's been interesting so far.

Excellent book.

Even though I had read some of these accidents reports in other publications, this book offered more details than I had read before.

Well written.

Wish it had pictures; not of all the death & carnage but at least points of reference like an L1011 or a Boeing 777.

HEELLLOOO ??

A recurring theme seems to be that many pilots approach their jobs like any other job, and it’s not. They sometimes seem to give little consideration for the lives of the people behind them that they’re 100% responsible for, which could be up to 500.
