Features & Highlights

  • The good folks at Mt. Zion Baptist are doing their best to keep the church flowing smoothly while Pastor Phillips takes time off to be with his wife in her final days. Beatrice "Mama B" Jackson even opens her home so that the women's groups can continue to meet faithfully after some “rascal” stole the copper from the church’s air conditioning unit. With her semi-estranged granddaughter and great-grandson staying in the guest room, Mama B soon has a full house. When the interim preacher and his wife start touting messages that don’t line up with the Bible, Mama B wonders how and if she can intervene without causing strife in the congregation or discouraging the young couple. However, Mama B can only take so much of this foolishness. Though her own faith might be intact, she can’t have her great-grandson believing that God is a Sugar Daddy in the sky. Soon enough, Mama B will realize that there is much more at stake than she or anyone else at Mt. Zion ever imagined. And it’s time to speak. A Time to Speak, the first novella (short novel) in the Mama B series, is full of godly wisdom and humor that will make you take a deep breath after that last page and smile from the inside out.

I liked that the chapters were short

I liked that the chapters were short. I didn't care for the main character Mama B because she is in her early seventies and she is portrayed through her words and actions as a much older person. However, she drives a Mini Cooper, has an iPhone, email address, eats healthy, exercises, and has good fashion sense. She complains about the "world's" influence but seems to enjoy what benefits her from that world. This was my first time reading this author and I would be open to reading other books by her just not a Mama B series.

... soothing as going for a walk in your most comfortable walking shoes

Reading the first book in the Mama B Series was as soothing as going for a walk in your most comfortable walking shoes. You know walking is good for you, so you prepare yourself for the miles ahead. Mama B is spiritual and tactful, funny and most of all honest. She reaches in her old-school-charm bag of reasoning and pulls out sensible and biblical strategies that will take you on a walk with her as she journeys through present day problems: How to deal with a granddaughter who comes to visit (but really needs a place to stay) who has her little son in tow. How to let God help you sit through new church leadership while you struggle with their views on how to run a ministry. And best of all being truthful with your own motives, and not-so-godly attitude while going through your trials. These are the makings of a short, but fun read as we watch Mama B, a seventy-two year young woman of God, go to God about her own life, while imparting wisdom to others around her who make her life challenging.

Loved it!

I read Boaz Brown and enjoyed it but I love Mama B. What a wonderful character. How could anyone not fall in love with her? I loved the lessons in the book as well, it was all about God. I just downloaded the next in the series to my iPad and I can't wait to read it. Thanks to technology, I won't have to!!!
