Features & Highlights

  • In the 25th anniversary edition of
  • Making Color Sing
  • , Jeanne Dobie teaches you new ways to think about color and make it work for you, through 31 clear, easy-to-follow exercises. No color exists in isolation; colors are always interacting with one another. As this nationally recognized author explains, understanding color relationships is the key to successful painting. Do you know how to use the push and pull of warm and cool colors to create a feeling of space? Can you generate exciting vibrations through the interplay of complements? Have you ever considered disguising one color in a scene to accent another color? All these possibilities—and more—are discussed and clarified with illustrations. The lessons on color lead into another essential painting consideration: composition and design. Painting is much more than copying what you see. It involves finding a structure that allows you to organize and thus communicate your impressions and reactions. Dobie encourages artists to experiment with different arrangements of shapes and values to build a dynamic foundation in their paintings. This manual stimulates new ways to think about colour, generating responses that unlock personal creativity and allow artists to express themselves with paint.

Excellent treatment of using color

An older book, re-issued with a new cover. This is the best book about using color that I've seen. Smart and articulate. Only problem is, it's nearly entirely about using watercolor. Doesn't say so on the sales page or on the cover. Even so, there's much here I can use with my chosen medium -- acrylics. Great title, too.

PALLETTE CHANGER

This book is very readable. After reading I have simplified my palette by using her colors. She makes the mixing of colors from this simple pallete very user friendly.

A solid reference

I used her recommendations to create a color chart of greens and neutrals. It was so impressive that all my fellow art students wanted a copy! I am using her palette for her greens and neutrals so far. More to do yet with her recommendations.

Making Color Sing, Jeanne Dobie

I have owned a copy of the earlier version of this book since 2006. I wanted this copy since I wished to give a copy of this book to an artist friend of mine. Jeanne Dobie, the author did an excellent job of describing how to use water colors with glazes, etc. I have recommended this book to a number of my artist friends and several have purchased the book and are impressed with it.

I learned so much from this book!

Best book on color theory I have ever read that was specific to water colors. It really changed the way that I paint.

Easy to understand, amazingly insightful

This is the best watercolor related purchase I have ever made. I’m only on page 14 and Jeanne Dobie has already answered every single problem I’ve had with mixing colors for the past two years. She pointed out things that I had noticed but been unable to change and gave such easy to understand solutions! I feel like I could move a mountain with this new knowledge (or at least paint myself moving one). HIGHLY recommend if you paint with watercolors you need this in your library.
