Description

“Chloe Esposito introduces a compelling and uncensored antiheroine in her trilogy’s first novel.” – US Weekly “Esposito comes on the scene at breakneck speed in this debut, combining sex, drugs, and a bloodlust that is never satisfied. Alvina is a character that readers won’t soon forget—funny, fierce, and fabulous... readers will clamor for the next two books faster than you can pull the trigger on a gun.” — Booklist ( s tarred review) “Mad is deliciously over-the-top, with a protagonist you’ll never forget and an ending that promises more chaos to come.” — Bookpage "Using Sicily as a backdrop with its gorgeous architecture, villas, and sexy men, Esposito pens an unforgettable summer debut headed by a no-holds-barred protagonist." — Library Journal “Pure, unadulterated entertainment. There is nothing Chloe Esposito’s Alvie won’t do. Strap in for a fun, fast and fresh read.” — Ali Land, author of Good Me Bad Me "I just read Mad in one go. I bloody LOVED it. Like Gone Girl , if Amy Schumer had written it. SUCH fun." --Bryony Gordon, bestselling author of Mad Girl Chloé Esposito grew up in Cheltenham, England, and now lives in London with her husband and daughters. She has a BA and MA in English from Oxford University and has been a senior management consultant, an English teacher at some of the UK's top private schools, and a fashion stylist at Condé Nast. A graduate of the Faber Academy, this is her first novel. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. There’s something you should know before we go any further: my heart is in the wrong place. So is my stomach, my liver, and my spleen. All my internal organs are on the opposite side, in exactly the place where they shouldn’t be. I’m back-to-front: a freak of nature. Seven billion people on this planet have their hearts on the left. Mine’s on the right. You don’t think that’s a sign? My sister’s heart is in the right place. Elizabeth is perfect, through and through. I am a mirror image of my twin, her dark side, her shadow. She is right and I am wrong. She’s right-handed; I am left. In Italian, the word for “left” is sinistra. I am the sinister sister. Beth is an angel and so what am I? Hold that thought.xa0.xa0.xa0. The funny thing is that to look at us, you couldn’t tell the difference. On the surface, we’re identical twins, but peel back the skin and you’ll get the shock of your life; watch in awe as my guts spill out all mixed up and topsy-turvy. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. It’s not a pretty sight. We’re monozygotic, if you want to know; Beth’s zygote split in two and I materialized. It happened at the very earliest stage of development, when her zygote was no more than a cluster of cells. Mum had been pregnant for only a few days and then—poof—out of nowhere, I show up, cuckoo-like. Beth had to share her nice, cozy amniotic bath and Mum’s home-cooked placenta. It was pretty crowded in that uterus; there wasn’t a lot of room for the two of us and our umbilical cords. Beth’s got tangled around her neck and then knotted pretty badly. It was touch and go for a while. I don’t know how that happened. It had nothing to do with me. Scientists think identical twins are completely random. We’re still a mystery; no one knows how or why I occurred. Some call it luck, coincidence, or chance. But nature doesn’t like random. God doesn’t just play dice. I came here for a reason; I know I did. I just don’t know what that reason is yet. The two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why. Read more

Features & Highlights

  • In this compulsively readable debut, set between London and Sicily over one blood-drenched week in the dead of summer, an identical twin reveals the crazy lies and twists she'll go through to not only steal her sister's perfect life, but to keep on living it.
  • Alvie Knightly is a trainwreck: aimless, haphazard, and pretty much constantly drunk. Alvie's existence is made even more futile in contrast to that of her identical and perfect twin sister, Beth. Alvie lives on social media, eats kebabs for breakfast, and gets stopped at security when the sex toy in her carry-on starts buzzing. Beth is married to a hot, rich Italian, dotes on her beautiful baby boy, and has always been their mother's favorite. The twins' days of having anything in common besides their looks are long gone. When Beth sends Alvie a first-class plane ticket to visit her in Italy, Alvie is reluctant to go. But when she gets fired from the job she hates and her flatmates kick her out on the streets, a luxury villa in glitzy Taormina suddenly sounds more appealing. Beth asks Alvie to swap places with her for just a few hours so she can go out unnoticed by her husband. Alvie jumps at the chance to take over her sister's life--if only temporarily. But when the night ends with Beth dead at the bottom of the pool, Alvie realizes that this is her chance to change her life. Alvie quickly discovers that living Beth's life is harder than she thought. What was her sister hiding from her husband? And why did Beth invite her to Italy at all? As Alvie digs deeper, she uncovers Mafia connections, secret lovers, attractive hitmen, and one extremely corrupt priest, all of whom are starting to catch on to her charade. Now Alvie has to rely on all the skills that made her unemployable--a turned-to-11 sex drive, a love of guns, lying to her mother--if she wants to keep her million-dollar prize. She is uncensored, unhinged, and unforgettable.

Absolutely awful.

This book is awful. In the first 18 pages (all I could bear to read), the "heroine": steps on a piece of pizza and eats the salami that sticks to her foot, has a pigeon defecate on her shoulder, eats a piece of gum from her computer monitor that is over a week old, ignores urgent work emails, tweets about watching porn at work, watches porn at work, discusses a recent "vajazzle," continues to describe the porn, gets fired, has a vulgar exchange with someone on Tinder, discusses her favorite sex toys, talks about how she likes fire and got in trouble for setting fire to the neighbor's cat and the shed with the dog locked inside, as well as setting a car on fire. I have no interest in a main character who is so obviously a psychopath. From reading other reviews it's obvious that she only gets more vulgar, crass, and violent from here on out and I'm not going to waste my time with such a loathsome character. Glad I got the book from the library and didn't waste any money on it.

Fast-paced and horribly funny

Alvie is a twin, and her life in London couldn’t be more different from that of her happily married sister Beth, in Sicily with her gorgeous husband and adorable baby, wearing designer clothes and living in a luxurious villa in the shadow of Mount Etna. Beth has the life Alvie wants.
Then Alvie gets an invitation (and a first class ticket) form Beth and she begins a sex and drug-fuelled trip that turns into a killing spree. At last Alvie’s found something she’s good at. But what’s really behind Beth’s invitation?
This is a really different book. It’s definitely uncensored and Alvie is definitely unhinged. It’s violent and Alvie is clearly a psychopath. But she’s also horribly funny and some of the situations she gets herself into are so mad that it’s difficult not to laugh. But she’s a horrible person and there really isn’t anything about her to counteract the terrible things she does.
But I think that that’s what makes this book so different. It makes you feel uncomfortable; Alvie makes you feel uncomfortable. There are no soft edges to her, nothing that invokes your sympathy. And that’s a brave character for the author to write.
I did think there were a few places where the writing could be tightened up a bit and where things were a bit too extreme, even for Alvie. But on the whole this is a fast-paced, uncomfortably funny book. And I’ll read the next in the trilogy, just to see what on earth Alvie gets up to next.

A scandalously fun page-turner!

As soon as I read the description of this book I knew I had to read it - it sounded edgy and a bit crazy, I couldn't wait to delve into the madness.

Wow, it was addictive right from the start. Alvina's behaviour was shocking but it was simply impossible to look away. I couldn't stop flipping the pages, I didn't just want to know what Alvina would do next, I needed to know! She was a pretty unforgettable character - blunt, mostly uncaring, unpredictable yet SO entertaining. There were certainly lots of laugh out loud moments.

Alvina was very sexually motivated so expect lots of explicit scenes. In my opinion these scenes were required to create the right atmosphere for the storyline, it needed to be edgy and gritty to successfully represent Alvina's strong personality.

I was surprised by Alvina's sister Beth, especially when she made her proposal - I had so many questions about her reasoning but feared I might never find the answers. I quickly forgot about the 'why' though as a crazy series of events followed, each of which had me on the edge of my seat wondering what on earth would happen next! Alvina seemed to thrive on all the drama as she rolled from one life-threatening situation to the next leaving all kinds of carnage in her wake.

Mad was a scandalously fun page-turner, complete with insane antics and heart-pounding action. I can't wait for the next instalment!

A writer to watch

I love the dual locations of London (Archway-UGH!. So perfect!) and Sicily (Oh, so beautiful). The contrast is beautifully executed. The author uses these two backdrops so masterfully. Yes, Alvie, the main character is "mad", but she is also so loveable and we can identify with her womanhood doubts, sibling rivalry and insecurities. She's a flawed heroine of an odd sort. Esposito makes us love Alvie, cheer for Alvie, but be disgusted with her at the same time. This is a writer to watch. She embraces the zeitgeist of fashion/celebrity/nouveau riche with such a beautiful writing skill, you just can't help but binge reading. I finished it in 24 hours, and read it again. The second time to soak in Esposito's beautiful writing. Bravo Chloe Esposito! I loved this book.

A fun romp.

Implausible bordering on the ridiculous at times, but if you're willing to suspend disbelief, it's darkly entertaining. A fun romp.

A roller coaster adventure

At the moment, Alvina Knightly’s life is a mess with her recent termination and mountains of debt. After several persistent messages from her twin sister, she takes up Beth’s invitation to visit Sicily.

Beth is not forthcoming about the reasons for Alvina to switch places with her for the day. When Beth finally returns, a roller coaster of events occur that no one could even fathom.

Chloe Esposito has written a widely entertaining novel that has the reader taking a double take and questioning whether what one has read has actually taken place. It’s incredible the adventures that Alvina/Beth gets involved with within a one-week period.

Thank you GoodReads for the book.

Not for the faint of heart

Pros: This book is not for the faint of heart. And this book is not my usual genre, either. It was recommended on the the Women's Podcast via The Irish Times. This book is witty, fast pace and has some twists and turns throughout the novel. Kind of like a Jackie Collins meets a Sheila Carter (Sheila is an "evil' character on the soap Bold and the Beautiful & Young and the Restless). If you are sensitive to sex scenes, drugs and murder, don't read this book. The main character is probably a psychopath, but it isn't "her fault". Or, she is the way she is because she wasn't wearing a helmet when she crashed and damaged her frontal lobe at the age of 7. Good dialogue, great scenery in Sicily, multiple references to current culture and lots of blood. Can't say that I root for Alvina and certainly wouldn't want her as a friend, but yet there is something likable or at least readable about her. Same goes for the other characters. No one is redeemable in any sense. Sets up nicely for book two. (What is Alvina going to do when she meets her mum?)

Cons: Not sure Alvina would be an accurate shooter (especially out of a Lamborghini and into a Land Rover for a first time gun user), but maybe there is something not reveled yet?

Art Cover: 5 out of 5 - Usually don't like it when the woman model is partially hidden, but this is perfect with the reflection of the villa on fire.

Wild Ride

This book is not for everyone, as will be obvious by all the 1 and 5-star reviews. The story itself was unique and quite the roller coaster, but the ending disappointed me. Whether part of a trilogy or not, I think every story should be complete, with a real ending, and this one was more of a "to be continued..." That was my greatest disappointment, but overall I found the book both compelling and enjoyable, although there were a couple of eye-rolling moments.

Everyone else seems to have glossed over what made Alvie so crazy. Someone posited that she hit her head at the age of 7, when in actuality, Alvie's craziness began on the day she was born. I haven't been able to get out of my head the concept of a mother who can lavish love on one child and none whatsoever on another. One who goes so far as to NEVER buy birthday or Christmas presents for one while buying piles for another. One who would go so far as to hold a birthday party and only give presents to one child in the presence of others, as if this is perfectly reasonable. Unless she goes out of her way to do something outrageous to get her mother's attention, Alvie is completely ignored. All her clothes are Beth's hand-me-downs, all her toys are things Beth no longer wants. ALL OF THEM. Though she never comes out and says it, Alvie is operating on a lifetime of pent-up anger and hatred. I don't think she even realizes it herself...yet, but the time will come. Her feelings toward her mother and sister come across as irritation, but they run much, much deeper. When Alvie has a chance to harm Beth, she does so with a vengeance. In this story, she feared her mother because her mother would be able to see through her ruse. But by the end of the book, that ruse is no longer necessary, so it will be interesting to see what happens when the new, unhinged Alvie sees her mother once again.

I'm really torn on whether or not I want to read the next installment. The author very skillfully wove Alvie's character and the things that drove her to be who she is. This book is only the beginning of Alvie's awakening to who she can become by running with it. She already tipped, quite easily, over the edge, and sees nothing but possibilities ahead. It's the kind of story that can be fun in fiction, yet horrifying in real life.

Though my feelings about it vacillate, I have to say, this is the kind of book that sticks in my head long after I turned the last page.

Tries but misses, still not as bad as some reviewers are making it to be

The book starts off fairly believable but it gets quite “comical” and tries too hard to be edgy. I can understand what the author was going for, bad girl goes quickly to worst girl. If you’re looking for a light read that tries to be serious but actually makes you end up laughing from the ridiculousness, it’s a perfect read.
