It's been a pleasant surprise to experience the recent upturn in the popularity of zombie fiction--a genre that somehow gets overlooked, or even denigrated, at times. In the vast overabundance of literature involving creatures of the night--vampires, I'm looking at you here--I think there's a marker to be laid down in favor of this breed of fiction. I think the post-apocalyptic genre, and the zombie sub-genre specifically, is indicative of a secret yearning. In a society full of people and technology and reality shows and tweets and blogs and constant information overload and ever-present presence everywhere, I think there is a buried longing for silence. For peace and quiet. For some piece of loneliness that can never truly be achieved in a society now so intertwined and interconnected.
