" Lucifer is one hell of a reintroduction to Sandman's King of Hell." —CBR“Dense and macabre…10/10.” —Comicosity"Full of both narrative and artistic surprises." —A.V. Club Writer Mike Carey, best known for his work on Vertigo's Lucifer and Hellblazer , has made his mark in comics. Born in Liverpool, England, Carey worked as a teacher for 15 years before gaining regular work writing for several independent companies. This led to the Lucifer solo title, which earned him a nomination for the 2001 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards - Best Writer. The Fourth Rail said of his work, "Carey gives the characters in all of the stories believable motivations and characterization." His additional Vertigo projects have included Faker and Crossing Midnight . In 2007 he helped DC launch the Minx line of graphic novels for teen girls with The Regifters . Beyond DC, Carey was also recognized for his work on Marvel's X-Men titles. He makes his home in London with his wife, Lin, and his children, Davey, Ben, and Louise.

  • , the Fallen One begins his own epic journey in this first of two oversize omnibus collections featuring Mike Carey's acclaimed, Eisner Award-nominated series. Since resigning his throne and abandoning his kingdom, Lucifer Morningstar has filled his days supervising a considerably reduced staff at Lux, Los Angeles' most elite piano bar. The arrival of a once-in-an-eternity job offer, however, is about to put an end to his quiet retirement. The contract comes straight from the Creator Himself, and if Lucifer successfully completes his task, the former lord of Hell can name his own price. But negotiating this particular razor's edge between opportunity and catastrophe will require all of his legendary subtlety and will--and no small amount of sacrifice. For his part, the Lightbringer is prepared to risk everything to win the power of Heaven's reward. The Devil's hands have been idle long enough.

A wild ride worth repeat journeys.

I first read Lucifer, then Sandman, years ago. I had always enjoyed the imaginative interactions between various figures of religions and mythologies (see also: American Gods), and took a bit of a shine to its refreshingly complex nominal protagonist. The individual volumes being a notorious beast to find, an omnibus worthy of most shelves (I admit the Sandman omnibus is a bit classier a binding) was a welcome opportunity to revisit or share at will. Print quality is excellent; be wary of its heft; and I'd recommend sitting the book jacket down somewhere else if you're going to handle the volume frequently.

Please note: if you're considering the omnibus you probably already know this, but...the graphic novels have virtually nothing to do with the travesty of a similarly named show on Fox. The story here is nearly* devoid of sex and other vices or cartoonish notions of good or evil, but rich in ambiguity, examples of allowing people to believe what they want, using language quite precisely, and respecting the traditions of others while still traveling one's own path. 13/10.

Lucifer is great, but anti China cringe inside.

Lucifer is incredible, the only bad thing about this book is the cringe, reactionary nonsense about China. Hearing white people talk about Mao and “Tiananmen Square” is a particular headache, is it usually persists of Reddit born nonsense, and this comic is no exception unfortunately.
