Disappointed

Had I read this book before the other three Liz Talbot books I doubt I would have read them! This book does not have the same personality as the other three. It bogs down and seems to not flow as freely as the other three books. I have laughed out loud at the shenanigans in the first three but not even a chuckle from this one. I own it so I read it but not with the anticipation of what would happen next as in the others. I feel a yawn coming on......

Four and a half stars...

I have become a big fan of Susan M. Boyer's Liz Talbot mystery series that takes place in Charleston, SC. The only thing that makes her novels even more enjoyable is when I read them while on vacation in the low country. Lowcountry Book Club is the fifth novel in this series and thoroughly suspenseful and enjoyable.

Lowcountry Book Club finds private investigators Liz Talbot and Nate Andrews newly married. A prominent Charleston wife, Shelby Poinsett Gerhardt was murdered and her former Army Ranger husband, Clint, is accused in her death. His lawyers from a prestigious Charleston law firm hire Liz and Nate to investigate who really killed Shelby and to keep Clint from going to trial. There is an awful lot that doesn't make sense about this case and the previous investigator the law firm hired seemed to be working against Clint and not for him. At the center of this novel is the Ashley Cooper Book Club. There is much high-drama surrounding this invitation-only book club including a waiting list and membership invites. But is it really possible that a murderer can be found in this group of proper Charleston ladies? Also, one of Liz's family friends and Charleston police detective, Sonny Ravenel, is also a suspect.

I especially enjoy the little “extras” that are included in Boyer's novels including Charleston history and current events. In Lowcountry Book Club, there is history about the Great Charleston Earthquake of 1886 as well as current invents that include the tent city under the Ravenel Bridge and the renovation project for Colonial Lake.

While I have enjoyed getting to know Susan M. Boyer and her characters, I suggest reading this series in order as the personal lives of the main characters progress with each book.

Charleston, SC hides a secret high class bordello where murder and family intrigues abound.

This entire Lowcountry series is a laugh riot, if a murder mystery is allowed laugh out loud moments. Scatty witted maiden aunty as the madam overseeing the educated, college/university students as 'ladies of interest' are 'kept' by various influential 'gentlemen' who pay the rent of their wards. The rent is for the upkeep of the beautiful, old gracious southern mansion in the posh part of Charleston and to provide a living for all who reside therein. Trouble comes one evening when a gentleman turns up dead in the parlor. liz Talbot, the heroine who keeps the series flowing is on the job to find out the who, what, when and most importantly, why?
