Description

WHO DO YOU LOVE? One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter? AND HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO . . . As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets. Would a trained police officer truly shoot her own husband? And would a mother harm her own child? . . . TO SAVE HER? For Tessa Leoni, the worst has not yet happened. She is walking a tightrope, with nowhere to turn, no one to trust, as the clock ticks down to a terrifying deadline. She has one goal in sight, and she will use every ounce of her training, every trick at her disposal, to do what must be done. No sacrifice is too great, no action unthinkable. A mother knows who she loves. And all others will be made to pay. Love you more . . . Guest Reviewer: Joseph Finder Joseph Finder planned to become a spy. Or maybe a professor of Russian history. Instead he became a bestselling thriller writer, and winner of the International Thriller Writers Award for Best Novel for Killer Instinct and winner of the Barry and Gumshoe Awards for Best Thriller for Company Man . I just took a break from writing my new book to read the latest by Lisa Gardner, who's one of the very few writers on my must-read list. Usually, when I'm deep into a novel, I read very little in the genre. But Lisa Gardner sent me an advance copy of Love You More , and I pretty much dropped everything and read it through the weekend. I've been a fan of Lisa's D.D. Warren series for some time, but she's truly outdone herself with this one. It grabs you on the first page and keeps you guessing until the final chapter, moving effortlessly between first person and third person narration, weaving an extraordinary amount of research into nonstop action. Love You More starts with a crime we think we understand. Massachusetts State Trooper Tessa Leoni's husband Brian is dead in their kitchen, and Trooper Leoni has been beaten almost to death. It looks to everyone like a case of a battered wife defending herself at last. But Leoni's six-year-old daughter, Sophie, is missing, and the trooper's story is full of holes--holes that become even wider and more curious as Boston Police Detective Sergeant D.D. Warren and her old lover, friend and former partner Bobby Dodge investigate. Warren is dealing with issues of her own, as her relationship with Alex (who never appears in person in this installment) reaches a major turning point, one with implications for Warren's investigation and beyond. (I'm not going to give away what that is. You'll have to read it to find out for yourself.) The nature and power of Trooper Leoni's attachment to her daughter are central to this story: just how much does Leoni love her daughter, and to what lengths will she go to protect her? Is it possible that a mother so devoted could kill her own child? As Warren and Dodge follow the trail of clues, they uncover secrets at every turn: a terrible crime in Leoni's adolescence, a shameful secret of her husband's, and unimaginable betrayal among comrades and friends. Stakes escalate to a climax that is shocking, sad and deeply satisfying. Love You More stands out in the crowded field of thrillers not only because it's a terrific book, but because it features two compelling and believable female protagonists. Trooper Leoni tells us her own story in the first person, alternating with the third-person narrative of Warren's investigation. Leoni's motives emerge over the course of the book, but her passion and conviction draw us in even before we know whether she's guilty or innocent. We cannot argue with her absolute drive, even as we root for Warren and Dodge to make sure justice is done. It's a remarkable juggling act that requires rare talent, and readers will be anxious for the next installment in D.D. Warren's adventures. I've noticed that a lot of guys have some kind of prejudice against thrillers written by women. Take my word for it: Lisa Gardner has the suspense chops to compete with Harlan Coben, Lee Child, and Michael Connelly. Anyone who's already read Tess Gerritsen, Karin Slaughter, Sandra Brown, or Mary Higgins Clark knows that some of the most gripping thrillers around are written by women. If you haven't yet discovered Lisa Gardner, now's the perfect time to start. Love You More is going to win her a legion of new fans and launch her right to the top of the lists along with Nora Roberts and Tami Hoag--and Stieg Larsson. A Letter from Author Lisa Gardner True confession time: for a woman who makes her living writing extremely diabolical suspense novels, I have no stomach for gore. Scary movies? Can’t watch them. Most of the crime shows on prime time? Egads, no way! Haunted houses? My husband has had to carry me out. It’s embarrassing but true. So when I first received the invitation to conduct research at the famed Body Farm at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, I didn’t know what to do with myself. As a forensics aficionado and thriller author, I just had to visit. A chance to learn first-hand how to search for buried remains? Or how to establish time of death for skeletal remains? Or the amount of forensic evidence that can still be retrieved from cremated bones? Sign me up! On the other hand, this would involve walking the fabled Death’s Acre, which generally features several hundred decomposing bodies. I had to consider not just what I was going to see, but what I was going to smell, touch, feel. The squeamish mom in me worried I wouldn’t be able to take it. And no one wants to be the one who barfs in front of trained professionals. What’s a girl gonna do? Of course I went. The Anthropological Research Facility, aka the Body Farm, was founded in the early ‘80s by Dr. William Bass. Up until then, the discovery of decomposed remains often led to a time of death plus or minus several years. Obviously, this complicated the homicide investigation. Dr. Bass’s solution: bury a body, see how long it took to skelatonize, and scientifically establish a rate of decomp. Of course, many variables immediately came into play: buried or unburied, clothed or clothed, hot humid conditions, cold frosty conditions, animal activity, insect activity, etc., etc. In the end, Dr. Bass couldn’t bury one body, he needed hundreds. Some donations were unclaimed remains from the ME’s office. Hundreds of others are directed donations from people who wanted to contribute to the advancement of science after their death. This kind of generosity makes Death’s Acre less a macabre wooded plot and more like hallowed ground. Instead of listening to anthropologists merely analyze body parts, I heard stories of people and families, of victims and criminal prosecutions, of crafty murderers and even craftier forensics experts. I learned of stories told in bone. Interestingly enough, the more the head anthropologist Dr. Lee Jantz humanized the remains we studied, the more bearable I found the sights and smells to be. When I cradled the feather-light cranial plate of a newborn infant in my hand, I could both marvel as its rose petal size and feel the weight of one parent’s heart-breaking contribution. I was both mesmerized by the skeleton collection, which took up endless rows of metal shelves, and amazed by how a scientist such as Dr. Jantz could pick up a single piece of cremated bone and tell you the person’s gender, approximate age, chronic health conditions and probable occupation. Bones, I learned, aren’t just body parts, but an organic record of who we are, what we did, where we lived, and often, how we died. And in the right hands, bones allow the dead to speak. Think a murderer can cover his tracks with a burn barrel and lighter fluid? Think again. Think you can thwart time of death by freezing remains? Nope. Think you can get away with murder? Thanks to forensic anthropologists such as Dr. Jantz, not likely. I came to the Body Farm expecting to be immersed in death, and instead, found a new appreciation for life. And while my family still refuses to let me tell stories about my research over dinner, I had a great time working with the anthropologists on my March 2011 release Love You More. Just remember, when you come to the key scene in the snowy woods—you’ll know which one I’m talking about—I worked for that scene. I walked Death’s Acre, and I never threw up. “One ofxa0 the best thriller writers in the business has written her best book to date.”xa0 —Associated Press“Having already produced a dozen successful thrillers, Gardner proves herself not only a very clever storyteller here, capable of pulling together a complicated series of events, but also a writer able to invest her characters (particularly her female ones) with emotional substance. It’s a question anyone should be able to answer. A question that defines a life, creates a future, guides most minutes of one’s days. Simple, elegant, encompassing. Who do you love? He asked the question, and I felt the answer in the weight of my duty belt, the constrictive confines of my armored vest, the tight brim of my trooper’s hat, pulled low over my brow. I reached down slowly, my fingers just brushing the top of my Sig Sauer, holstered at my hip. "Who do you love?" he cried again, louder now, more insistent. My fingers bypassed my state- issued weapon, finding the black leather keeper that held my duty belt to my waist. The Velcro rasped loudly as I unfastened the first band, then the second, third, fourth. I worked the metal buckle, then my twenty pound duty belt, complete with my sidearm, Taser, and collapsible steel baton released from my waist and dangled in the space between us. "Don’t do this," I whispered, one last shot at reason. He merely smiled. "Too little, too late." "Where’s Sophie? What did you do?" "Belt. On the table. Now." "No." "GUN. On the table. NOW!" In response, I widened my stance, squaring off in the middle of the kitchen, duty belt still suspended from my left hand. Four years of my life, patrolling the highways of Massachusetts, swearing to defend and protect. I had training and experience on my side. I could go for my gun. Commit to the act, grab the Sig Sauer, and startxa0 shooting. Sig Sauer was holstered at an awkward angle that would cost me precious seconds. He was watching, waiting for any sudden movement. Failure would be firmly and terribly punished. Who do you love? He was right. That’s what it came down to in the end. Who did you love and how much would you risk for them? "GUN!" he boomed. "Now, dammit!" I thought of my six- year- old daughter, the scent of her hair, the feel of her skinny arms wrapped tight around my neck, the sound of her voice as I tucked her in bed each night. "Love you, Mommy," she always whispered. Love you, too, baby. Love you.xa0 His arm moved, first tentative stretch for the suspended duty belt, my holstered weapon. One last chance . . . I looked my husband in the eye. A single heartbeat of time. Who do you love? I made my decision. I set down my trooper’s belt on the kitchen table. And he grabbed my Sig Sauer and opened fire. From Publishers Weekly Near the start of Thriller Award–winner Gardner's gripping fifth novel featuring Boston PD Sgt. Det. D.D. Warren (after Live to Tell), D.D.'s former partner and one-time lover, Det. Bobby Dodge, of the Massachusetts State Police, asks her to look into what appears to be a clear-cut homicide case. The evidence suggests that Tessa Leoni, a state trooper colleague of Bobby's, shot and killed her abusive husband, Brian Darby, who may have kidnapped her six-year-old daughter, Sophie. But Tessa won't talk about her bruises, her husband, or what might have happened to her child. D.D. examines every detail about the family, while Tessa uses her skills to manipulate the investigation. From Tessa's point of view, we learn about her and Brian's courtship, his affection for Sophie, and how the marriage began to disintegrate. Gardner sprinkles plenty of clues and inventive twists to keep readers off-kilter as the suspense builds to a realistic, jaw-dropping finale. Author tour. (Mar.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. From Booklist *Starred Review* Detective D. D. Warren of the Boston police and Massachusetts state trooper Bobby Dodge are together again, this time not as lovers but as partners in the investigation of a state trooper who shot and killed her husband. Tessa Leoni’s bruised face leads to speculation that she retaliated when her husband hit her. But there’s a lot that doesn’t fit the model, not the least of which is the disappearance of the couple’s six-year-old daughter, Sophie. Could Tessa, by all accounts an exemplary officer and an exceptionally devoted mother, have shot her husband three times in the chest and then killed her own child? If so, where is Sophie’s body? Just when D. D. thinks she has it all figured out, a curious new piece of the puzzle emerges. Gardner deftly entwines the stories of the two women officers—one, newly pregnant, charged with solving a strange case; the other a mother who, as it turns out, would do anything to protect her child. Having already produced a dozen successful thrillers, Gardner proves herself not only a very clever storyteller here, capable of pulling together a complicated series of events, but also a writer able to invest her characters (particularly her female ones) with emotional substance. Compelling and unexpected, this tale of mystery and maternal devotion shows Gardner at her very best. Enjoyable read but leaves one unsatisfied with character development and the plot...

I just finished reading the book. It is really easy to read. It is tight and moves beautifully. However, the book failed on the character development of D.D. and its ridiculous storyline in the latter chapters. One flaw of the book is that it is supposed to be a book about Detective D.D. Warren. It should probe and discover more about D.D: her rapidly changing life and unfortunate choices. However, this book is much better at exploring the horizons of the other woman, Tessa. I am disappointed that the book failed to build a comprehensive picture of D.D. Furthermore, the plot gets non-sensical as it moves to the end, especially (spoiler alert) when Tessa gets shot on the shoulder because she was hoping to use a knife (what?!) to fight a man with a gun. It just didn't make any sense when Tessa was all the more careful and wise girl who would never commit such a grave mistake in the entire book. To sum it up, it is an enjoyable read. But for the more critical readers like me, it would probably be better off if the plots make more sense and D.D more room to expand.

Unbelievable

This was one of the most unsatisfying books I've read to date. It's hard to pin down where the author went wrong. Was it the incredibly weak backstory of the heroine? Was it the improbable way she planned and escaped from police custody? OR how about the motive for the crime that the entire book relied on for credibility. In what world does a person willingly admit to murder1 without any discussion on whether or not they will be charged. The police are very subjective regarding which crimes, capital or otherwise, they pursue. The biggest crime was this rag of a book but together solely to introduce the new turn in DD's life. Completely unacceptable. If I'm paying higher prices for electronic books vs paperbacks I should at least get my money's worth. Did not this go around and will for sure never purchase another book by this auhor.

An action-thriller with an improbable plot, and lots of blood.

This is an action-thriller with a rather improbable plot, and improbable solutions along the way. So if you are looking for a fast-paced story with a super-heroine this might be the book for you. I had read Lisa Gardner before and I thought this might be a good place to start. It falls somewhere in the middle of her D.D.Warren series, and it's also the kickoff for her Tessa Leoni series - a spin-off, so to speak.. So the reader gets two super heroines for the price of one.

There's an opening murder, and it is the beginning of the "improbable" and rather artificially complex mystery that evolves. Tessa's husband is murdered in their kitchen with her weapon (she's a state trooper), Tessa's 6 year old daughter is missing, and Tessa is mum about the whole thing. D.D. Warren, a Boston Police Sergeant Detective is sent to investigate along with loads of other cops. D.D. is grumpy throughout the whole book - I don't know if this is D.D.'s usual thing, or if it has to do with her situation and the whole investigation. But it was more than a tad frustrating reading a long book, suffering through "Grumpy" and "Mum". Of course, in the last 20 pages or so, Grumpy starts to melt a bit (it's winter-time in Boston), and Mummy starts to open up, but by then I'd had enough of both of them.

There is one last thing that bothered me about this book, though I suspect it's true of many action thrillers, and just one reason why I generally don't read them. There are some unnecessary killings here (I counted three) that I feel were not justified. All three seemed to be motivated by revenge. They were executions, no question of self-defense. Does our heroine assassin get away with it? What do you think?

However, in all fairness to Lisa Gardner, she writes a gripping story here; it's a real page-turner. Just not my cop of tea.

A mother's love can lead to many crimes.

Another set of crimes to be solved by DD. She does this while accepting that she is pregnant and needs to decide what to do and how to tell the father. Meanwhile she is to assigned to work the case with Bobby, a former lover, now married to someone else and a new father. There relationship remains close as they struggle w boundaries needed to define a new relationship for them.

The murders build as layers of crime are explored. State Troopers, Boston Police, spouses of said, Russian crime lords and an enforcer are involved in the crimes. Tessa Leoni and her daughter are the primary focus. Tessa's evolvement in a shooting while in high school along with Tessa's difficult childhood play a role ad well.

Enjoy the reading.

Unbelievable action thriller

This is my 3rd DD Warren novel and I like her and her no-nonsense style but this a little too much imagination and bloodshed.
The plot is unbelievable, the heroine is an unbelievable giant that could operate so well after a concussion, drive a car after shoulder blade was damaged and the main villain is so stupid to throw away his life for 250K. I am sure his pension is much more than that.
The story made the police sound clueless. Just because Tessa destroyed the phone does not mean they can’t get the call history. They can get from the service provider of the officer’s phone!
I also don’t like thrillers where hero or heroine get away scotfree after killing 3 people.

A page turner!

I couldn't put this book down until I read the last page! What an exceptional read! Not once did I figure out the mastermind behind this captivating plan. Great action packed movement flow in the storyline. Kudos to Tess Leoni for being so well trained in her job that is usually seen as a man's territorial area. And for being the loving, caring mother we all hope we are, always ready to do whatever it takes to keep the demons away from our child. Definitely another amazing book from Ms. Gardner!!! (I'm off to read the next book in this series!)

Not as good as usual

I am a fun of Gardner's novels, but I did not like this one. Although the plot is good, it is dragging on at an incredibly slow speed. Also, D.D.'s permanent agony about her pregnancy does not help the matter. The entire book could have been written by using half the number of pages and it would have been much more entertaining. All in all, I personally prefer her other books (the other girl, Live to tell). Read it only if there is nothing else left from Gardner's books you have not read yet.

Where Have You Gone, Bobby Dodge?

DD Warren, apparently suffering from morning sickness, is called in by old flame Bobby Dodge to lead an investigation. Seems an abused cop has killed her husband--and her six year old daughter is missing. Kidnapped? Murdered by Mom?

Officer Leoni also has a past. She's a recovering alcoholic. She also killed a guy in self-defense as a teen. Killing one dude that way can be explained, but two? It seems hinky to Warren.

It's a solid plot, full of twists and turns. You'll change sides numerous times. The characters, particularly Leoni, sparkle.

However, the denouement rings a bit off key. The caper at the middle of the mystery is a tad ho-hum. And Bobby Dodge, so brilliant in ALONE, is reduced to a cardboard cut-out straight out of LAW AND ORDER.

Strongly recommended but not a must read.

disappointed

I did not think this book was as good as Gardner's others in this series. Yes, D.D. is pregnant but she is both too introspective and short-tempered. This may appeal to women readers; still I found the pregnancy test scene in the store to be overdone. There was a lot of pre-publicity about this book also; maybe to get us to pay the $12.99 more willingly than 9.99.
