Kate Tanner grabbed her notebook and headed out of the newspaper building to join the people spilling out onto the Lexington, Kentucky, streets. Tommy yelled that she could get a better view from the upstairs window, but she wasn't worried about the best view. This wasn't just the chance for another story. Her feet wanted to dance in the streets too. The boys were coming home! Japan had surrendered. The bombs, the terrible bombs, had finished the fighting. The war was over. The instant she stepped out on the sidewalk, a stranger grabbed her, lifted her off her feet, and spun her around. He was smiling. She was smiling. He said something when he turned her loose, but she had no idea what as church bells and horns drowned out his words. He laughed and slung his hat up in the air with no thought of retrieving it before he ran on up the street. Everywhere people waved handkerchiefs and papers in the air. Kate joined in with her notebook. Sal from the restaurant across the street grabbed her in a bear hug and knocked her notebook out of her hand. It didn't matter. She didn't need to take notes. Every second of this scene would be burned in her memory forever. The shouts and laughter. The boys shimmying up the lampposts who wouldn't have to go to war now. The girls sparkling at the thought of their sweethearts coming home. Sparkling like Kate. She felt the crackle of Jay's last letter in her pocket. His words played through her mind. I love you. I'll be coming home to Rosey Corner soon unless I have to ship out to the Pacific. Nobody's sure what's going to happen there. But now he could be sure. They could all be sure. He was in Germany. Not fighting anymore. Blessedly not fighting since the Allied forces rolled through Berlin in May. Hitler was dead and the Germans defeated. The prison camps had been liberated. Mike, her sister's husband, was free after two years in a German stalag. Praise the Lord neither he nor Jay would have to go to the Pacific. The only place they had to come now was home. Home to Rosey Corner, Kentucky. Kate wished one of the happy people pushing past her was Evie. Her sister would surely be dancing in the streets in Louisville where she worked. It would be even better if they were both in Rosey Corner with their other sisters. Lorena would be singing, her beautiful voice calling Jay and Mike home. Tori would be celebrating too, or trying to. She'd be happy for Evie and Kate. She would. Sincerely happy, but tears would be under her smile. Not all the boys would be coming home. Tori's Sammy would not. Sadness stabbed through Kate. How many other wives and mothers watched the celebration with sorrow in their hearts? Those like Tori who had taken down their Service flag to cover the blue star with a gold one, showing the terrible price of the war? She shook away the thought. This wasn't the time to weep for the dead. It was time to rejoice that the dying was over. Two girls she knew from the dime store grabbed Kate's hands to pull her on up the street. Not to get anywhere, but just because if they didn't move, they might explode from the joy. The boys were coming home! (Continues...) Excerpted from Love Comes Home by Ann H. Gabhart . I really felt for the characters and loved how the book wasn't just about one couple.

Love Comes Home was a really good read. I loved getting to know the characters I "met" in Small Town Girl (second book in this series, but first one I read) more.

This was definitely not an "everything's perfect" read, as several of the characters go through heartbreaking situations, which made it realistic. I really felt for the characters and loved how the book wasn't just about one couple.

While I did really like the book, I didn't care for the times when it seemed like the story was being told from characters' reflections/thoughts. I preferred it more when we learned things as they happened.

All in all, a great read that I enjoyed. If there are more Rosey Corner novels, I'll probably read them. I recommend Love Comes Home to fans of historical novels -- especially if you enjoy WWII novels and don't mind some sad scenes.

Lightly Heavy Christian Romance

Ann Gabhart is one of the authors I have enjoyed more than others. Her latest, this novel, is clearly a romance. It's funny to me that it's labeled "Historical Fiction". It should really just be labeled "Christian Romance" in my opinion.

This latest novel by Ms. Gabhart is about a family of sisters after World War II finding their way to love. There's pain and suffering in the novel. The recovery of the men from the war is only touched upon and not delved into. The story focuses more on the role of love in each of the sisters' lives and their trials, travails, healing, and blessings.

Picture four sisters ranging in age from 14 to 25 years old (I think). One wonders about the family who left her amidst the Great Depression. One adjusts to pregnancy and her husband, a rescued POW, returning from the war. Another grieves the loss of her husband to the war and processes how to heal and continue living with her toddler daughter. The last, who saw herself as the strong one, copes with her husband returning from the war who she loves but doesn't know that well. The story follows these four sisters and their stories.

I'm just going to consider this in terms of being a romance. If you enjoy Christian romance and want a book that isn't going to put things into your mind that you don't want there, this book will fit the bill. It does idealize love a little bit and make it seem as the be and end all of life, but don't most romance books do that? I appreciated the way the sisters bore with each other amidst different personalities, gave each other space when they needed it, but put each other first, too. It is a good, solid book about family and what it means to love one's family. The story is set in a time when families lived in closer proximity than they do today. Our culture has changed. But, the ideas of loving one's siblings and bearing with irritations are the same things that happen in families even from a distance when siblings communicate regularly and have relationships with one another.

If you enjoy Christian fiction set around the time of WWII and romances, you'll probably enjoy this one. I didn't realize that this was the third in a series at first and that Angel Sister was the first book. I much preferred Angel Sister and often recommend it. I didn't read the second book in this series, but it was easy enough to read this book as a stand alone series. I think I can understand now why there isn't as much character development in the book since it is the third book in this series. I had wondered about that a little when I had begun the book...

I have read other books by Ann Gabhart and she's a good writer. I did have trouble with Love Comes Home and a previous book in the same series. Lots of sisters to keep track of. It was very depressing to keep reading page after page about Tori's loss. Everyone can sympathize with her lose during the war, but it was a bit much. State the situation and move on from there.

Great read. This book has an awesome storyline. I did not want it to end. I sure hope there will be more books forthcoming in this series. This is the kind of book that leaves you with the impression that you have actually been with the characters in the story and have been influenced by them.

Heartwarming fiction

Love Comes Home drew me in right from the beginning. It was a joy to catch up on the lives of the Merritt sisters of Rosey Corner at the end of World War II. Ann Gabhart has done a masterful job of showing the reader how residents of a typical small town reacted when their servicemen returned.
On the other side of the issue, the reader also experiences the feelings of those same servicemen when they attempt to integrate what they’ve experienced overseas with the expectations of those who’ve waited at home.
Kate, Evangeline, and Victoria Merritt each have their place in the story, as does Lorena Birdsong. How these sisters learn to trust the Lord’s leading over their own plans makes for a heart-warming novel. Even though these characters were introduced in Angel Sister, the first book in the series, Love Comes Home can be read as a stand-alone.
However, after reading this one I’m sure you’ll want to go back and read Angel Sister and Small Town Girl as well. Personally, I’m hoping there will be more Rosey Corner stories to follow Love Comes Home.
I give Love Comes Home two enthusiastic thumbs up.

a great Christian fiction novel

Ann Gabhart is a very talented writer and I love reading her books. I have not read the first two books in this series but did not have any problems diving into Love Comes Home. I hope to read the first two books in the near future. I loved all of the characters and thought Fern was a novel addition to the story. Also liked the important roles Clay Weber and Aunt Hattie added to the story.
World War II is finally over and the troops are returning home to family and friends. Kate is waiting for her husband Jay. Ready to begin their life together and start a family. Evangeline is waiting for her husband Mike a preacher and longs for material things and for her husband to be a preacher in a large church. Victoria was waiting for Sammy but sadly is now a single parent to her daughter Samantha. Lorena their younger sister who was left on the steps of their church several years ago is wanting to find out more about her birth parents. Kate and Evangeline find that the war has changed their husbands. Rosey Corner is a small town where all are eagerly waiting to welcome the boys home. A town that knows what goes on in each others lives. They are not just friends but family. They are giving, and supportive.
The Merritt sisters are overwhelmed with happiness but also sadness. Challenges, heartaches, healing, over coming fears and struggles. You will shed tears and laughter with them. They are a strong family with a strong love for each other and faith in God.
Will Jay and Mike find their way and overcome the trauma of the war? Will Kate have the baby she longs for? How will Evangeline's plans for the future work out? Will Victoria stay a single parent or find a new love?
This is a heartwarming and inspiring story that will keep you turning the pages.

I received this book from bookfun.org for my honest opinion and review.

Stay for a good visit in Rosey Corner, read all 3 books!

I was very excited when I learned that I would be receiving a copy of Love Comes Home to review for The Book Club Network. I love the writing of Ann Gabhart. Since this is the final installment in the Rosey Corner trilogy, I knew I wanted to read Angel Sister and Small Town Girl first. I am so glad I did. The characters in these books are well developed and you do not want to miss any of the details of their story.
When Love Comes Home opens, the young husbands are coming home from
World War II to their brides with whom they had barely started married life. Mike, the young preacher who felt for his whole life that God had called him to preach, has changed. He spent much of the war as a prisoner of the Germans and he now doubts his call to preach. Jay, who after an abusive childhood, finally found love with Kate and her family, doesn’t want to talk about the war. He keeps that part of himself hidden from Kate. Sammy, who married Tori when she was sixteen, does not make it home. He leaves behind a nineteen year old widow and child. Lorena Birdsong, the precious little girl who was left on the church steps only to be taken in and loved by the Merritt family, now wants to find her birth family. Can the faith and love from those who surround them help them to heal? Will new love come to Rosey Corner.
The author does not gloss over the big issues of life. She addresses love and loss in a loving, straightforward manner. Her prose are beautiful and her application of spiritual truths is right on. This is a wonderful book, but don’t cheat yourself by just taking a passing visit to Rosey Corner. Stay awhile and read all three books. You won’t regret it!
