Description

“Lore of Nutrition gives Noakes's take on the 'code of silence' that he feels pervades the scientific and medical community.” ( Lose It! Magazine ) Prof. Tim Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 16 000 times in scientific literature, has an h-index of 71 and is rated an A1 scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa. After coming across research which denounced current international dietary guidelines as fallacy and being left frustrated by a decline in his own health, Prof. Noakes started researching the effects of carbohydrates, proteins and fats on the human race. His research convinced him that a high-fat, low-carb diet is the healthiest option for many.Marika Sboros, publisher and editor of Foodmed.net, is one of South Africa’s top writers on health and well-being. She started her journalistic career at the Rand Daily Mail and has written for major newspapers, including The Star and Business Day, as well as the BizNews website, and has worked in radio. Features & Highlights

  • “In the context of junk diets, embedded scientists, corrupt – or simply ignorant – doctors and dietitians, human health and omertàs, what you believe about your personal nutrition will determine not just how you live, but also how you die.” – Tim NoakesWhat would you do if you discovered that the food you have been told is good for you is actually the cause of your ill health …? In December 2010, Professor Tim Noakes was introduced to a way of eating that was contrary to everything he had been taught and was accepted as conventional nutrition ‘wisdom’. Having observed the benefits of the low-carb, high-fat lifestyle first-hand, and after thorough and intensive research, Noakes enthusiastically revealed his findings to the South African public in 2012. The backlash from his colleagues in the medical establishment was as swift as it was brutal, and culminated in a misconduct inquiry launched by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The subsequent hearing lasted well over a year, but Noakes ultimately triumphed, being found not guilty of unprofessional conduct in April 2017. In Lore of Nutrition, he explains the science behind the low-carb, high-fat/Banting diet, and why he champions this lifestyle despite the constant persecution and efforts to silence him. He also discusses at length what he has come to see as a medical and scientific code of silence that discourages anyone in the profession from speaking out against the current dietary guidelines. Leading food, health and medical journalist Marika Sboros, who attended every day of the HPCSA hearing, provides the fascinating backstory to the inquiry, which often reads like a spy novel.Lore of Nutrition is an eye-opener and a must-read for anyone who cares about their health.

Too little on the science

I was misled by the title; I thought the book would deal wholly with the science of low carb diets. This book did contain a lot of science, and one of the chapters was dedicated entirely to the LCHF evidence base. A large part of the book was about the trial of Prof Noakes vs. the Health Professions Council. In my opinion there was too much about the trial, and not enough about the science. Even so, it was still gripping and well worth a read, except one or two chapter that read like a newspaper article. I am looking forward to his second book on the topic, the one where he will do a deep dive into the science.

Too much detail on the trial.

It seems this book was re-released in 2019 as “Real Food On Trial: How the diet dictators tried to destroy a top scientist.”
The new title better reflects the content of the book.

I purchased the “Lore of Nutrition” expecting an analysis of the evidence supporting a Low Carbohydrate, High Fat diet. To a large degree that’s what I got. However I felt there was too much detail regarding Dr. Noakes’ trial/hearing with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Hence I feel the title of the re-released book better reflects the content.

I read the first two chapters of the “Lore of Nutrition” then skipped to Part III: The Science. On page 308 Dr. Noakes states “we soon realized that if we were to include ALL the scientific evidence supporting the … LCHF diet, the book would simply be too overwhelming. Instead, we agreed that to supplement the science in the preceding chapters [that cover the trial], I would write a couple of chapters at the end outlining the key themes underpinning the evidence…” Those two chapters are worth the price of this book.

Dr. Noakes went on to state the intention “to save the more complex details for a second book… for doctors, dietitians and others interested in the complete evidence that supports our promotion of the LCHF eating plan.” I’m a physician and I want that book — though as far as I can tell it is not yet published.

Love it! but not what I expected.

This book is intense and fascinating! A lot of the reading is technical, so I keep my highlighter close by and use as many reading strategies as possible-I don't want to miss anything! Fortunately I am old and cynical so am not traumatized by the extent of the megacorps slyness, irresponsible, and downright mean behaviors. They seem to have no boundaries when it comes to protecting their profits. In spite of what Tim Noakes has to go through to "get the word out", he just states the facts and doesn't waste pages on bashing those who fight hard to discredit his good name. We need more brave, noble people like Mr. Noakes to stand up for what he knows to be true.

Important science

This was a great read. If you are interested in nutrition, science or law you should love it. I realize there are people who will quickly “disagree” with Dr. Noakes, as you do. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t read this. If you write off this book out of hand without reading it, you’re the quack.

Dr. Noakes is simply one of the best thinkers and scientists of our generation. He’s asking hard questions and seeking answers. Even in the face of great resistance.

This was an extremely interesting book!
