Description

Book Description The most comprehensive guide to Ireland.

Full of information, but probably not for everyone

LP guides are always known for their information, and although I've read a few reviews disparaging the guide's thin pages, this is precisely what allows LP to pack in 700 pages of rich information in a book that's just an inch thick. If you are going on an extensive trip all around Ireland, this is a great one-stop-shop with all the critical information that you need. In some ways, Ireland is the perfect kind of country for an LP guide: it is compact enough that LP can provide a large amount of information without either becoming too bulky or having to skimp on depth in order to have good breadth (these issues often creep up in LP guides on larger countries).

So, why not give it 5 stars? Because, for your average tourist, who probably has at most two weeks (and more likely a week or less) in Ireland, this guide has a lot of information you won't need or use, and the sections on the places you will visit are sometimes a little lacking or not quite as user-friendly as one would like. For your typical visitor to Ireland, I'd recommend a guide like Rick Steves', where you have just the right amount of information, which is well-organized and written in a more engaging and yet still informative style. LP has closed the gap in recent years, but when it comes to maps, walking and driving tours, and practical information, I'd go for Steves' more-information-on-fewer-places approach than LP's less-information-on-more-places approach. Now, obviously, if you're spending longer in Ireland or seeing a lot of places in the country, then LP might be more useful. But, I look at some of LP's suggested itineraries and just cringe ... why try to rush through Ireland and barnstorm the whole island in a week or two--the best way to enjoy Ireland is to take your time, savor it, and soak in the atmosphere ... not check dozens of places off your list. Especially in an age when all the information in LP (or any guide, for that matter) is readily available online, I'd rather have a guide that is more engaging and emphasizes not just "what's there" but also "how best to experience it." LP Ireland is a fine guide, but all things considered, not my favorite for Ireland.

Lonely Planet Does it Again

This book is a very thorough breakdown of multiple towns and cities in Ireland. A bit heavy if you are planning to carry it on a trip but it covers everything you might have a question on. Highly recommend it.

This book is packed full of great information!

This book is packed full of great information!! I am pleased that I purchased it. I did leave off one star simply because it is rather heavy and bulky. I bought it and I took it with me on my vacation to Ireland. I found it to be easier to pull out my cell phone and look up information on the fly rather than pulling out this book. But it was very fun to read before the trip to get excited and get some good ideas! But if you are a tech savvy person you might just find it easier to look up travel information on the internet.

I drover over 1800km and visited 8 cities countless sights and this was super helpful in that

Bought 3 books for my trip, this was the third. This was, by far, the most helpful thanks to the maps. I drover over 1800km and visited 8 cities countless sights and this was super helpful in that. Buy this if you're going to Ireland. Beware of the other Ireland book this company makes, it's not as good.

... book based on reviews on Amazon stating it was better than Rick Steeves book

I purchased this book based on reviews on Amazon stating it was better than Rick Steeves book. I respectfully disagree with those reviews. I personally find Rick Steeves book gives me more practical information. That is not to say this is not a good travel book and does have helpful information, but I was hoping for more specific details. I love the pull out map of Dublin and will be using it during our 4 days there.
