Review “Startling...[Carroll] raises critical questions about the ever-changing balance between science, security and safety...Right on target.” — Popular Science About the Author Michael Christopher Carroll spent seven years researching and writing Lab 257 . A native of Long Island and an avid outdoorsman, Carroll is now general counsel of a New York-based finance company. He lives on Long Island and in New York City.

Features & Highlights

  • Strictly off limits to the public, Plum Island is home to virginal beaches, cliffs, forests, ponds -- and the deadliest germs that have ever roamed the planet.
  • Lab 257
  • blows the lid off the stunning true nature and checkered history of Plum Island. It shows that the seemingly bucolic island in the shadow of New York City is a ticking biological time bomb that none of us can safely ignore.
  • Based on declassified government documents, in-depth interviews, and access to Plum Island itself, this is an eye-opening, suspenseful account of a federal government germ laboratory gone terribly wrong. For the first time,
  • Lab 257
  • takes you deep inside this secret world and presents startling revelations on virus outbreaks, biological meltdowns, infected workers, the periodic flushing of contaminated raw sewage into area waters, and the insidious connections between Plum Island, Lyme disease, and the deadly West Nile virus. The book also probes what's in store for Plum Island's new owner, the Department of Homeland Security, in this age of bioterrorism.
  • Lab 257
  • is a call to action for those concerned with protecting present and future generations from preventable biological catastrophes.

Insightful, chilling, disturbing.

I came to this book after reading the book Bitten: The Secret History of Lyme Disease that kept referencing Lab 257. Since I enjoyed that book so much, I thought I would enjoy this one as well. Though this book was written years ago, it is important to note the problems that can result when a lab is doing experimental work that can leave an unsecured area. This is one of many tales of good intentions (e.g. doing scientific work to learn more and to help defend against worst case scenarios) and the unintended consequences of choosing a site that is less than ideal and protocols that were not consistently adhered to. Even though it is dated, it is good to go back and read the history of this area and the type of research done. I would recommmend this to anyone who is able to stomach things that are disturbing to know but important to have an awareness of.

Great information and history of the Lab, but a Bash book

It started off well and carried on well into the book with great information about the history of germ and agriculture virus research and how it was fused in with the military. Great details. Who would have thought Lyme disease was likely an escape!!! The only issue is that it becomes a BASH book and that takes over and finishes off the book like that. I kind of struggled to stay interested a few times, but it was able to draw me back in. It finished with the continuing and sustained narrative of bash and thats not what I really wanted out of the book. Good, well written book by someone who knows how to investigate and research.

Carrol covers Plum Island in great depth and leaves little to the imagination

Mr. Carrol covers Plum Island in great depth and leaves little to the imagination. I would definitely suggest anyone interested in the origins of Lyme to read this book.
