Description

First, thank you all for your support over the years. After selling over 1.2 million sets ofxa0 "Knot Cards", I decided to expand the format *a little*! A book offers so much more space for the illustrations and text and of course more pages can be done than with the portable little cards. But since with a book you do lose that portability factor, I included with this title a set of the best selling version of my knot cards. It's the best of both worlds! It has been a great labor of love bringing this book to fruition. I believe we have one fantastic knot book here! I truly hope you all enjoy it and the knots you will learn. John Sherry has been illustrating knots and writing about knots for more than 25 years. His knot illustrations are used for training by the US Department of Defense, US Customs and Border Protection, municipal fire departments, scout troops, sailing schools, utility companies and many search and rescue organizations. He is president of Pro-Knot, a company that publishes waterproof plastic knot cards for fishermen, boaters, campers and anyone that finds themselves with a rope in hand, and has sold over one million of the popular knot card sets. Sherry is a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers and lives in Bend Oregon with his wife and daughter, where he enjoys fly fishing, hiking, camping, and maintaining the internet's most popular knot tying website, netknots.com.

Expand Your Knotledge With This Set!

I have always been fascinated by people who know how to tie a knot for any situation. I have historically been the guy who makes every knot a double (or triple) half hitch. That’s been the extent of my knotledge. (See what I did there). This book (and the included cards) are perfect for someone like me! I have had the products about a week and I already feel that I have come close to mastering 4-6 knots! It is amazing to me how many different useful knots there are!! My favorite part about this set is that the author gives you a description of the knot, how it is typically used, and how “secure” the knot is. For example on some of the hitch knots the author will note “not to be trusted in critical applications” or “use with caution because this knot can slip” or “this knot can be used in an emergency rescue situation”. The pictures and “how to tie” descriptions are super clear and easy to follow. All around 5/5 stars!! Totally recommend!

Buy this now!!

I'm an avid camper/backpacker and have always wanted to hone my knot skills. There are so many in the world and I find myself just falling back on the same old overhand knot we learned to tie our shoes. Not anymore! I've already designed adjustable dog tie outs, for my campsites, made from store bought rope.
The little cards that come with the book are very handy. The author decided which knots are the most useful, and included them in the cards. The book is very detailed and walks you through each knot. How to tie it and how and why it can be used in real life. All the knots take practice, of course, but this books illustrations and design help a lot. I highly recommend. Very happy I chose this over others. So many knots in the book, it's great!
Plus, the book is strong/sturdy and well made. There really are no disadvantages.

Hubby Loves It!!!

I purchased this book for my hubby and he has been working on his knots every night since it arrived.

He's loves this book!

It's a great new hobby for him and it's also a really useful craft to learn.

He says the directions are super easy to follow and he's so proud of himself each time he learns a new one.

He's so cute when he shows the latest knot he's mastered.

He practices the ones he has learned to really commit them to memory.

This is a great how to book if you want to learn knots for camping, fishing, or just to use around the farm.

You won't be disappointed with this book. Comes with cheater cards and even a bit of rope to practice.

10+ stars for this one! It's a great purchase.

I hope this helps you.

Great diagrams, easy to follow tying sequence

This is one of the best -- clear diagrams and descriptions show how to tie each knot, nice paragraph about usage, strengths and weaknesses about each knot. I highly recommend this book. (I haven't opened the included cards and string -- I've got ample practice cordage all over the place.)

Great birthday present for a 12 year old

He loves it! Interesting how the practice cord is attached and “hidden” inside the cover

Too much

I wanted a book about fishing knots, not about knots I'll never ever use. Save your $$ and use YouTube.

Lots of knots, nice quality book.

Nice book of knots. Bought for husband that is getting back into fishing, for his birthday.
The pictures look nice and easy to follow, and the book is a good size so you can see the pictures also. The binding is really nice and lays flat easily. It has a thick hardcover with cards and nylon cord in the front. The cord looks cheap and has fraying ends, I didn't open that part though. It looks like the ends can be melted to stop the fraying on the cord. The cards are pretty nice and easy to get out and put back away. The sections are color coded, so it is easy to jump to the area in the book you need.
I can't wait to give it to him. I think he will have fun learning new knots and can teach our kids some too. And it will come in handy for camping too.

Excellent book, with a few extremely minor flaws

Very good book, easy to read, easy to follow. The five star review stands, despite a few items I would like to see improved.

The good:
The book shows how to tie 100 knots. The pics are clear, and generally easy to follow. It is unrealistic to expect to follow every knot instruction without flaw on the first try, so I will not nitpick the graphics. Sometimes, you just have to pick up a few pieces of rope and do it as you read the instructions.

The bad:
Not much bad. Few items. The length of rope included with the book is probably about three feet/one meter long. The product description shows what looks like 50 feet of paracord. No, you are not getting that.
The rope provided is a single color length, I HIGHLY recommend getting two different color ropes to practice the knots. I pulled the lace from a worn out pair of hiking boots (green) and use it with the red cord provided. Makes it much easier to follow the illustrations.

The ugly:
(My failure here), but this is not a class in knot tying. The book lists the knots alphabetically, not in order of complexity, strength, or other "usefulness". Knots that appear early in the book depend on knots that do not show up until much later.
There is no discussion on terminology used. You are expected to know working end, free end, bight, loop, etc... There is a short glossary at the end, but it is just that... short. Similar gripe about the illustrations. There is no legend provided that explains any of the conventions used in the illustrations. Granted, they are easy to figure out, but a legend would have a huge help.

Overall, the bad and ugly items are very minor complaints, and I hope the author reads this review and takes them into consideration for any update in the works.

Good for creating ridgeline systems...

This book is fantastic. The knots are clearly illustrated and explained. It contains a good variety of knots. I used it to create a fairly advanced pre-made ridgeline system for hammock camping using a combination of the knots in this book. The cards will be good to have as well in case I forget the knots I plan on using to hang the line in the field. Thanks for this awesome book!
