Review Praise for Kismet “An amusing takedown of influencer culture.” — Kirkus Reviews “Readers will be curious to see what this talented author does next.” — Publishers Weekly “Akhtar turns her sharp wit on the wellness community and its dark secrets in a thriller equal parts vicious and funny.” — USA Today “Akhtar brings to her second novel…a gimlet-eyed view of Sedona, Ariz.’s wellness pretensions and a wicked way with one-liners…the surprises Akhtar has in store upend assumptions about trauma, healing, and the motivations of those who helicopter into lands they claim to hold sacred.” — Los Angeles Times “New age empowerment goes awry quickly as psychic slips into psycho in Kismet , Amina Akhtar’s second novel, a Hitchcockian horror thriller set in the red canyons of Sedona, Arizona.” — Mystery Scene Magazine “Twisty, sardonic.” — Oprah Daily “The alluring world of wellness gets a fatal awakening in Amina Akhtar’s darkly humorous thriller Kismet .” — Popsugar “Addictive.” — The Big Thrill “An impressive blend of mystery, thriller and dark humor that will draw you in almost instantly and not let go until all is revealed in the final pages.” — Bookreporter “[Kismet] skewers the wellness industry of Sedona (Amina Akhtar is now based in Arizona) and also includes a light supernatural touch that’s perfectly integrated into the thriller arc as a whole.” — CrimeReads “Amina Akhtar weaves a wickedly smart tale.” — Desi News “With Kismet , Amina Akhtar invites us into the foxhole with Ronnie Khan, a New Yorker stationed in Sedona, just in time for Wellness World War. I loved this book—the claustrophobia of wide ‘open’ exclusive spaces. Amina teleports us to the passive-aggressive front lines in this dry landscape where caftans and corpses are equally foreboding. You want Ronnie to make a run for it, but she’s a real hero—she wants to make a go for it. Lucky for us, she stays. Kismet is wicked and smart, a fly-on-the-wall humdinger where a light social gathering spikes your blood pressure. Amina deftly intertwines the earthly with the otherworldly. Read it now so you can be the one telling your friends about Kismet .” —Caroline Kepnes, New York Times bestselling author of You “Amina Akhtar had me at ravens! Then she kept me turning the pages with her colorful cast of characters, keen insights, and layered, engaging heroine. Kismet is darkly funny, sharply observant, and full of surprises. Don’t miss this utterly original and wildly entertaining thriller.” —Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of Last Girl Ghosted “The twists just keep coming in Kismet , Amina Akhtar’s dark and delicious thriller. I can’t imagine a better companion around these nail-biting curves than the novel’s protagonist, Ronnie Khan, who is wide eyed yet smarter than she lets on, naive yet world weary. In a nutshell: she’s the perfect heroine. I’d follow her anywhere.” —Jess Lourey, Amazon Charts bestselling author of Unspeakable Things “Dead bodies are turning up in Sedona’s upscale wellness community? Sign me up! I loved everything about Kismet , Amina Akhtar’s sharply observant, funny thriller. Gleeful and gripping, Akhtar has knocked it out of the park with this wickedly entertaining, twisty novel.” —Jennifer Hillier, bestselling author of Little Secrets “A chilling tale that lures in the reader with a seductive blend of friendship and tranquility, then transforms it into something evil and deliciously twisted.” —A. R. Torre, New York Times bestselling author of Every Last Secret “ Kismet is funny, sharp, twisty, and spot on. Whether she’s dealing with toxic relationships or everyday racism, Ronnie Khan is a character that you can’t help but root for. I can’t remember the last time I had this much fun reading a novel. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is going to be talking about those ravens.” —Kellye Garrett, Agatha, Anthony, and Lefty Award–winning author of Like a Sister “Wickedly smart and outrageously entertaining, Kismet grabs hold and doesn’t let go until a final twist that will have even the savviest readers gasping. Just like the clever, scene-stealing ravens, Akhtar skewers those who deserve it with her trademark wit while also layering in emotional nuance as compelling as the captivating mystery. At once atmospheric, chilling, and thought-provoking, Kismet will surely be this summer’s must-read thriller.” —Brianna Labuskes, bestselling author of A Familiar Sight “Gaspingly original. Kismet is brilliant and twisty—a knockout page-turner about guilt, revenge, and the toxicity of family and friendships. The oh-so-talented Amina Akhtar unleashes her keen eye and mordant wit—and exquisite understanding of human emotions—to reveal the dark side of the wellness industry and the terrifying reality behind the glam exteriors. Wow! This gripping, heartbreaking, and constantly surprising thriller is not to be missed!” —Hank Phillippi Ryan, USA Today bestselling author of Her Perfect Life “Amina Akhtar yet again brings her wickedly wicked style to this twisty thriller about a woman who’s finally taken charge of her life—only to find dead bodies piling up around her in the wellness community where she’s starting over. Kismet is a page-turner populated by eerie ravens and people who aren’t what they seem in a perfectly unsettling desert setting.” —Gigi Pandian, USA Today bestselling author of Under Lock & Skeleton Key “Kismet is the twistiest, most delicious take on wellness and self-care gone wrong. With a cast of unforgettable characters, a point of view you’ll never guess, and an ending that leaves you breathless, you’ll be busting down doors to join me as co-president of the Amina Akhtar fan club!” —Yasmin Angoe, author of Her Name Is Knight “ Kismet is a gleeful (and at times literal) skewering of influencer culture and clout chasing, as well as a deeply relevant look at how easily and often the white wellness world intersects with racism and cultural appropriation—and how blind we can be to that and to the stain it leaves on the world around us. A bold and insightful whodunnit that ensures you’ll never look at ravens the same way again.” —Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, bestselling authors of The Royal We and The Heir Affair “ Kismet is an unforgettable read, with a fantastic setting and backdrop—sharp, haunting, and loaded with Amina Akhtar’s hypnotic, visceral voice. Chilling, surprising, and loaded with biting commentary on the Sedona wellness community, this novel lingered with me for days after I finished it. Kismet is mesmerizing—a writer at the peak of her powers.” —Alex Segura, acclaimed author of Secret Identity , Star Wars Poe Dameron: Free Fall , and Blackout “Unsettling from the very first page, Kismet takes its readers on a wild ride set in Sedona’s wellness community, featuring a serial killer, crystals, and kick-ass ravens. It’s strange and smart and spellbinding, with sharp social commentary and huge surprises. Another eerie gem from Amina Akhtar.” —Megan Collins, author of The Family Plot “A mystery thriller just the way I like them—full of secrets and karma. Amina Akhtar creeps us out and keeps us guessing all the way!” —Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of Road of Bones and Ararat “ Kismet is as atmospheric as it is dark and twisted. An unsettling read with wholly original protagonists, this is one thrilling story I won’t be forgetting soon.” —Hannah Mary McKinnon, international bestselling author of Never Coming Home “A remarkably original, terrifying read that seized me from the first line. Kismet is an astonishing, expertly structured thriller. Akhtar’s signature creepy tone, suffused with dread and laced with wicked humor, is riveting. Her characters make you blur the lines of morality and justice. With brilliantly shifting points of view, a touch of magic, and a jaw-dropping ending, this is a stand-out suspense.” —Samantha M. Bailey, international bestselling author of Woman on the Edge and Watch Out for Her “A desert setting, crystals to ward off evil, cunning ravens, and murder. Amina Akhtar has whipped up a creepy mystery that will have you second-guessing what you know about the wellness industry, not to mention what to think the next time you see ravens!” —Wanda Morris, Lefty-nominated author of All Her Little Secrets “One of the most original, chilling, and startlingly honest thrillers I’ve ever read, Amina Akhtar plunges readers into an altogether fresh flavor of hell in Kismet . Balancing nail-biting terror with razor-sharp wit, Akhtar interrogates the feral side of the human heart with a rare fearlessness that is certain to make Kismet one of the year’s hottest titles and an absolute must-read. Period.” —P. J. Vernon, acclaimed author of Bath Haus Praise for Amina Akhtar “ #FashionVictim is sick and vicious and funny and voicey…I ‘totes’ loved this one.” —Caroline Kepnes, New York Times bestselling author “For those craving a new fashionably vicious read, this book is darkly satisfying.” — Martha Stewart Living “A diabolical page-turner…impossible to put down.” — Forbes “Darkly funny.” — Fashionista “As awesome as it sounds…welcome to the cruel world of fashion where women’s looks, weight, and youth are the only things to value.” — Book Riot “Hilariously funny as well as profoundly unsettling…will keep readers hooked and laughing, if a bit uncomfortably, from page one until the shocking ending.” — Kirkus Reviews “Full of suspense, social satire, and deliciously dark humor, #FashionVictim gives ‘killer wardrobe’ a whole new meaning. I couldn’t put it down.” —Alison Gaylin, USA Today bestselling author of If I Die Tonight “ #FashionVictim is sharp, stylish, and gleefully sinister; you’ll never read Vogue the same way again.” —Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks, founders of Go Fug Yourself and authors of the national bestseller The Royal We “ #FashionVictim gives new meaning to the phrase ‘dressed to kill’…instead of the devil wearing Prada, she’s wearing her victim’s blood in a perfect shade of Essie red.” —Aliza Licht, EVP marketing and communications and the author of Leave Your Mark “Every page of #FashionVictim pops with a dark and dishy verve. Fierce in every sense of the word.” —Jessica Tom, author of Food Whore “ #FashionVictim is a book to not only buy, keep, and read, but to inhale from page one. The sense of menace in the prologue will hook readers from the get-go, and Akhtar’s sharp-as-a-tack writing will carry you along this entertaining read to a stunning end, um, ending.” —New York Journal of Books “Gleefully bloodthirsty…this dark novel has the energy of Heathers gone twentysomething.” — Publishers Weekly “The characters reminded me a great deal of the dark movie Heathers …a whole lot of sick fun. All I can hope is that the author was not speaking from reality…and that another book will be written very, very soon.” — Suspense Magazine “The story’s dark humor is one of its best attributes, and while the reader may wonder if Anya will get caught, there’s no doubt that whatever happens, she’ll be dressed to kill.” — Mystery Scene Magazine About the Author Amina Akhtar is a former fashion writer and editor. WTH did I just read?!

SPOILERS ***
**WTH did I just read? First of all, the BIG plot twist was pretty clear from the introduction of the twins. Secondly, at the very end -- this still baffles me-- what paperwork did Caroline/Marley have on Ronnie?!? I get that they figured her out but what paper trail was there, causing her to do what she did.

Was enjoying it but.....

I was enjoying the book and storyline but as I continued to read Ronnie's continued references to "white people" started to grate on me. More then once she mocked the way a person would pronounce something. Maybe Ronnie could have said it is pronounced like this. Instead of digs within your book why don't you sit down and have a discussion to why someone voted the way they did, or why they fly a blue lives matter flag or why the fly the American flag, you might be surprised they are more like you then you think.

A Serial Killer is Slaughtering Scam Artists in the Land of Mystics and Misfits!

Ronnie Khan has sold her house in New York City and moved with her best friend, Marley Dewhurst, to Sedona, Arizona. She is finally free of her evil, abusive aunt, Shameem Khala. Unfortunately, because of her Pakistani heritage, Ronnie is often mistaken for being a foreigner from India and shunned or ridiculed. Many of Sedona's residents are hippies, healers, and New Agers. While hiking in the red clay mountains, Ronnie and Marley stumble upon the hideously dismembered corpse of a man, Matt Ford, who was reputed to be a scam artist. Other scam artists begin dying at the hands of a serial killer who is labelled the Sedona Slasher. Meanwhile, Ronnie has bizarre psychic dreams involving ravens and their foreshadowing of the serial killer's next victim. The body count rises, dark secrets are revealed, and Ronnie fears for the safety of her eccentric friends.

Amina Akhtar's "Kismet" is one of the creepiest, most bizarre mysteries I have read in a very long time. Reading it was a surreal experience that made me feel as though I was an active participant in someone else's nightmare. Extremely intriguing from beginning to end, it tackles sensitive issues of racism, child abuse, and product liability in the world of mystic wellness. Our heroine, Rania "Ronnie" Khan, is an American-born Pakistani who has done everything in her power to assimilate into modern society; however, after moving to Sedona, she is still ridiculed and humiliated because of her appearance. Throughout the novel, readers encounter flashbacks, titled BEFORE, in which they learn about the horrible abuse Ronnie suffered at the hands of her evil, jealous aunt, Shaheem Khala. I felt that I was reading a Pakastani version of "Cinderella." Shaheem would beat Ronnie, cut up her new clothes, and refuse to allow her to have any friends. Ronnie was also forced, like a slave, to perform all the cooking and cleaning.

Readers are introduced to the bizarre and mysterious world of mystic wellness. It is a world of healing crystals, tarot card readings, and practices of past life regression (reincarnation) and astral progression. This desert paradise quickly devolves into a type of living hell, especially for Ronnie who feels she doesn't belong. Our heroine should be very thankful she doesn't belong there with the New Age misfits who are divided into two categories: those with low self-esteem and those who are taking advantage of those with low self-esteem. (One of the characters nearly dies when a spiritual sojourn in the desert goes awry; no one takes responsibility for this near disaster.) The wolves are running amok, devouring the lambs, while the ravens--millions of them--are watching. Ravens are mystic creatures. While reading "Kismet," I kept thinking about Edgar Allan Poe's creepy, unnerving poem, "The Raven." Ravens play an extremely important role in the novel. In one pivotal scene, they physically attack a major character, nearly killing them.

It was the setting that intrigued me the most about "Kismet." Sedona is a small desert paradise that is very beautiful, but it has its hidden dangers in the forms of snakes, scorpions, ravens, and javelinas. Looking like a cross between a pig and a large rodent, the javelinas in this novel run in packs and can be aggressive. The humans in Sedona also run in packs, especially when they are organized into vigilante groups by attention-seeking Marley Dewhurst in response to the Sedona Slasher. In their natural state, the citizens of Sedona (comprised mostly of women) are shallow, egotistical, materialistic, and greedy. Most of the novel's major characters are bad; some are more bad than others. None of Ronnie's "friends" can be trusted. Ronnie begins to suspect that one of them is a murderer. As the novel progresses, she keeps stating that she doesn't know any of her friends very well. In fact, readers don't know Ronnie either. She hasn't been entirely honest.

Amina Akhtar's "Kismet" kept me mesmerized from cover to cover as though a magical spell had been cast over me. The setting, characters, and writing style are magnificent. The mystery itself is a great one. Who is killing the slimy scam artists of Sedona? Personally, I was having a ton of fun cheering for the Sedona Slasher. I was hoping they would never get caught. The plot is very suspenseful; it has more twists and turns than a desert sidewinder. After reading "Kismet," I plan to stay far away from mystic wellness centers. If I become ill, I will seek healing from certified physicians, eat my fruits and vegetables, and exercise on a daily basis. Shamans, crystals, and tarot cards are just not my cup of chai. However, intriguing serial killer thrillers such as "Kismet" are definitely my cup of chai. I would gladly take a long hike through an Arizona desert for an opportunity to read Akhtar's next mystery.

Too Bizarre, Dark and Disturbing for Me

So, this one was weird, so, so, weird, bizarre, creepy, dark, and disturbing - it was too disturbing once I figured out the twist and the ending. Also, the ravens were creepy too - gave me a whole new perspective on ravens.

This was a very different mystery/thriller type book. It's about Ronnie, who's ready for change and to leave all her old life behind and become a new person. Ronnie follows her life coach, Marley in a big move across the country from New York to Sedona, Arizona and they move in together to live a healthy life with yoga, crystals, healing, and everything. The relationship between Ronnie and Marley is a bit strange, to say the least. I mean, who picks up and moves across the country with their life coach and then moves in with them? Then there was mention of Ronnie's past life with her aunt, who was very nasty, mean, and abusive and it seemed like Ronnie realized the unhealthy nature of her aunt and their relationship - can we say codependency, etc and then went and repeated it in her leaving that past life.

Once they get to Sedona, AZ, things get weirder with how murders start happening and other things with Ronnie, Marley, the ravens, and Caroline - a new 'friend' they make and also the twins with the store where Ronnie gets a job. Ronnie tries to figure out what's happening some, stay safe and keep Marley safe, but then things take a turn with the twist at the very end and it gets very bizarre, dark, and disturbing.
If you like unreliable narrators, dark, disturbing, a bizarre mystery, thriller, and suspense books, then you'll like this one, but I am not a fan.

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for letting me read and review this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Fun skewer of the wellness industry in Sedona, AZ

This is Ms. Akhtar's 2nd book, and I'm impressed enough to want to read her first book as well. A seemingly well intentioned relocation to Sedona, AZ to restore and cultivate wellness, turns into murder and mayhem in Kismet.
Our main character, Ronnie, is a Pakistani woman living with her overbearing aunt in Queens, NY. She decides to take a wellness class from Marley, and seduced with a complete change in her life, is convinced to move to AZ with Marley to start her wellness business. Marley and Ronnie could not be more opposite. Marley is a privileged white woman who has had everything handed to her in life and always gets what she wants.

Ronnie's parents were killed in a car crash, and is now forced to live with her abusive aunt and take a menial office job from her aunt's friend. When she finds out her parents left the house to her she decides to sell the house and move with Marley, abandoning the sexist, controlling Pakistani people surrounding her aunt. She hardly knows Marley, but feels they have a good connection and will become fast friends. Ronnie has several secrets, one of which is her dreams, dreams that sometimes come true.

As she gets situated in Sedona, she feels a bit out of place, being the only person of color in the predominantly white city. Soon strange things begin happening, and mean people start dying. There's a great cast of supporting characters, of which ravens pay a big part. If you feed them, you may not be next.

I guessed early on who I thought the killer was, however there were several great twists at the end that were very unexpected. Ronnie is able to create a new life for herself, at a cost. A fun read and makes you think twice if you see a raven or two in your yard.

Beyond Spookily Twisted!

Ruffle My Feathers! 😳😯🤯🤯

This unique mystery type thriller, with just a touch of otherworldly magic & visions, is enough to break the mold of a typical thriller and call your name to be one of them. Akhtar spins a perfect weave of spooky, magic, mystery, suspense and one insane ending, while also dealing with stereotypes and racism. It will keep you on the edge of your bed, but fulfill you with quirky, dark humour at times. This is unlike anything I've read in this genre, and the interesting ingredients she uses to enhance the plot are divine!

Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: Ronnie has just done something life changing and completely out of character, especially for her being of and growing up with the culture from Pakistan. She's upped and sold her home in Queens, New York, met Marley at a Yoga class who is a life coach, and together they've embarked to Sedona, Arizona where it's all about healing, health, self-care and becoming your best self here. Which is exactly what Ronnie's been after. Is this town really all it claims and portrays, especially once a body turns up.

This thriller was such a refreshing novel! I absolutely loved it and the original twist of a plot to boot! The suspense and mystery with different POV's kept the intrigue and curiosity heightened. The ending was incredible. I was so satisfied when I read this, and I happily sped through it like a kid running down the stairs on Christmas morning to see under the tree! This is a book you need just for it's originality alone. She knows how to intertwine doom, gloom and spooky while throwing in some excellent humour. So insanely scrumptious!
PS: I'll never look at Ravens the same way again.

Creepy good!

I loved Fashion Victim so knew I had to request this one! It was just as creepy-weird as I'd hoped! Ronnie moves with "best friend" Marley to AZ as Marley has heard of this wellness clinic that's supposed to be world-famous. But people are being murdered and no one knows how or why; even in the "killer's" chapters, the character is unknown. Tension increases as Marley has many ideas and is anxious to get as many followers as she can since she is an internet glutton. Ronnie is increasingly concerned as she falls out of favor with Marley and many of her new friends, but she's a smart woman and attempts to "belong" even when she doesn't agree. Fast-paced and fun, this novel will have you looking at the world differently (and I will never be able to look at a raven the same way either)!

Darkly funny

If you can embrace all the psychopaths in this book, you can have a lot of fun. An entertaining look at "manifesting" your life at the expense of others. I loved the ravens, a Greek chorus of nature. Darkly funny and unsettling, a very satisfying read.

Quirky and fun read

Quirky but fun book that is outside of my normal reading genre preferences. I was entertained, and wanted to keep reading to see how things played out, and "who did it". My initial draw to the book was the setting in Sedona, AZ. I love the desert SW, and don't find many books set there. It was an interesting mystery set in Sedona and the community of healers, crystals, and such. I didn't relate to any of the characters, but was curious to watch things play out. I also enjoyed the ravens who play a part in the story, and even have chapters devoted to their thoughts. All in all it was an easy read that had humor and a good mystery at its core.
