Daly has a gift for realistic, snappy dialogue . . . This story is as much about cornering a criminal as it is about aiming a light on the human knack for acquiring martyr complexes, an affliction that sticks to all the characters in varying degrees.” — Maclean’s “A pacy psychologival thriller that perfectly captures the voice of a stressed-out working mum.” — The Sunday Mirror “Here’s reason for celebration: a first novel that lives up to the billing, with italics and asterisk, page-turner! . . . Daly describes the crimes and the characters with prose that never pauses for breath and leads us through stunning mini-climaxes until we reach the big whammo.” — Toronto Star “ Just What Kind of Mother Are You? is the very definition of a page-turner – the sort of book that causes you to lose half a day without even noticing. A compelling read." —Alison Gaylin, bestselling author of Into the Dark “Paula Daly's finely-wrought debut thriller deals with overburdened working women who are doing their best but are in danger of being swamped by the conflicting demands being placed upon them. Daly's characters are well-drawn, complex individuals who oftentimes are not what they seem to be, and her small-town settings seethe with twisted dynamics lurking just below the bucolic surfaces.” —Lisa Brackmann, author of Hour of the Rat and Rock Paper Tiger “An assured and nail-biting debut which gives an authentic portrayal of modern family life and the pressures of being a working mother. Daly writes eloquently about an ordinary family plunged into a nightmare and sets her story in the wintry landscape of the English Lakes. A tense and satisfying read.” —Cath Staincliffe, author of Split Second and Dead to Me “A terrifically assured debut—a compelling read with a wholly appealing protagonist and great doses of humor along with the suspense.” —Kathleen George, author of Simple and The Odds “This is a superb debut novel, which engages the reader from the first page and doesn't let up until the final twist at the very end. An unsettling portrayal of just how easily lives can unravel amid the pressures of modern life. Close the curtains, stoke up the fire and prepare for an excellent read.” —Diane Janes, author of Why Didn’t You Come for Me? “I read it all in one sitting. It's unputdownable: exactly the kind of book I love—a slow burning psychological suspense with lots of twists. As well as being full of suspense, it is rich in domestic detail and brilliantly examines the pressures that working parents—specifically working mothers—are under to be perfect in every way. Annoyed, really annoyed...

A first-class rip off. The title is awkward. The book is trashy. Literary gimmicks are borrowed from more successful authors (the chapters in italics, for instance, which illuminate the thought processes of the bad guy). I am dismayed at and fed up with spending money on junky books with 5-star ratings. What is the sense behind a 5-star rating for this blatantly cheapo book and a lesser rating for Anne Tyler or Nick Hornby or Doris Lessing or or or.... SHEESH! My fault for being taken in, I guess. I'll cart this one off to the paper recycling today. I dislike being ripped off.

A Fast, Fun Read That Will Hold Your Interest

With a title like this, who wouldn't read the book? I picked it up Paula Day's novel not really sure what it was about. Indeed, not being a "mom" myself, I had some trouble relating to the Lisa's sense of guilt. The book begins with a missing child. The child is the best friend of the protagonist's daughter. The two girls were supposed to spend the night together, but the friend didn't come. The story revolves around Lisa's guilt. She considers herself responsible because she never called the mother to tell her that her daughter didn't come spend the night. She puts the blame on herself. And as it turns out, so does everyone else. Personally, I couldn't see that it was her fault. Forgetting to call the mom doesn't seem to rank up there in my guilt world. But, the author tried to make it as poignant as possible. In this world of helicopter moms, perhaps this storyline has some merit. For me, it didn't quite ring true. There were a few things that didn't quite tie together once the truth is told. I can't elaborate on those because I don't want to create spoilers. As the story unfolds, the reader becomes aware of Lisa's tremendous insecurity. She not just an insecure mom, she's also an insecure wife. I suppose the only thing she feels confident about is her job in animal rescue.

The author does a nice job of setting the suspense. I didn't like many of the characters--particularly the missing child's parents. Even though I could feel their pain and the agony, I never "liked" them. And, neither did the protagonist. She did the "right" thing, but did she do it out of genuine friendship or guilt? That was the question the story kept asking. If I had to pick one likable character it would be Lisa's husband Joe. Otherwise the rest had major flaws. That didn't diminish my enjoyment. In fact I like books where the author shows flaws in the characters. Perfect protagonists are no fun to read!

This book was well-written and a fast read. You'll keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. The chapters are short and before you know it, you are turning to the next one and the next.

The ending surprised me but the author set it up nicely. I didn't feel cheated (as I did in Gone Girl). The only reason I would give this book four rather than five stars is the few inconsistencies I noted earlier. It's a good read and I definitely recommend it to my mystery/suspense readers.

Interesting (with spoilers)

This book was a page turner & the story itself was good. But I almost quit reading this book as soon as Lucinda disappeared. Lisa immediately starting blaming herself & I kept thinking "why didn't Kate check on her child". But Lisa continually whining & crying "its all my fault!" literally had me pissed off.
The lead detective & her aunt-that whole story line was unnecessary.
This story just had a lot going on but overall I thought it was an okay story

good choice

Enjoyed this book very much. Main character is a woman who is overwhelmed with life in general and her struggle to keep up the seemingly glamorous moms in her community. When a teenage girl goes missing on her watch, secrets of a small community are revealed as well as a bit of a side story. Fast, interesting read, a bit of suspense, but nothing deep or profound. Don't expect to fall in love with any characters.

Great writing, ridiculous story

Overall it was just ok. The writing was great, the story not so much. The characters said and did things that would never fly in real life. Too many loopholes in the story. The ending was ridiculous. The book drags on and on and then bam the mystery is revealed quickly at the very end. The behavior of the characters was inconsistent. For example one is very submissive and meek, but at the end is suddenly brazen and not like she has been at all. Also happened with the others. Its hard to describe without spoiling anything! Basically good writing, ridiculous story and characters. I would still read more from this author.

Good read, ended too fast

This was a pretty good read, kept me turning pages for sure. Did not see the ending coming, but once everything was revealed, I felt like it ended too fast. Could've definitely used another chapter!

Amazing thriller

Holy cow! So many twists and turns throughout this novel, secrets and lies all throughout this little town but the REAL story is even more intense! Paula Daly has a gift! She keeps the reader intrigued from the very first chapter and it just gets to a point in the novel where I do not want to put the book down.

This novel follows Lisa, a small town very busy working mom, who always is juggling many things all in the air but all at once feels as though everything has plummeted to the ground; Lisa is the cause of her best friend Kate's daughter missing, or so everyone is ready to say very quickly. Lucinda (Kate's daughter) and Sally (Lisa's daughter) were supposed to have a weeknight sleepover because of a school project, but that day of Sally felt sick and didn't go to school so juggling Lisa didn't think anything about it....until no one had seen Lucinda for over a day. And everyone, including Kate, is blaming Lisa. As the story unfolds all these little secrets and lies begin coming out and Lisa is not as guilty as she seems, but the most surprising people in the town are the ones who are really guilty.

A must read for those that like mystery thriller novels, this is definitely an author I will keep coming back to.

TV OFF BOOK OUT!

A great read-Daly has managed to combine humour and tragedy -no mean feat. An interesting switch from first person to third person adds to this refreshing writing style, direct voice reads like a really good friend telling you a very interesting story.

I really enjoyed this book and switched the tv off early on an evening to get stuck into it.
