Description

From School Library Journal Pre-Grade 1–In this cumulative picture book, Elephant wants to swim in the pond, so he chases Hippo away. Hippo forces Lion to move so that he can get by, and Lion chases Leopard out of his favorite spot. Leopard forces Monkey out of the tree, and he runs to Mama, who advises him to stand up for himself. With her help, he tells Leopard, Don't you tell me what to do, this tree's big enough for two. Share it with me as a friend, don't be mean to me again. This rhythmic refrain is repeated as each animal, with the help of his new friends, stands up to the bigger bully until all of the creatures are playing together in the pond. The watercolor and charcoal spreads with digital techniques are inviting and simple while conveying the animals' fear and then remorse when confronted. The predictable recurring text makes this a good read-aloud and a helpful way to introduce the topic to children. –Kristine M. Jungle Bullies - a much needed picture book!

Jungle Bullies is a picture book for preschoolers that teaches young children to identify the act of bullying and models an appropriate response in similar situations in a fun, non threatening medium. The illustrations are colorful and friendly. The book is repetitious and predictable. This book meets State standards for early education social and emotional development and is a great character builder. "Read it again." can be heard from my grandchildren frequently this summer (ages 2 and 3). We occasionally repeat the chant together when we are driving or at the park and we observe someone trying to display bully behavior. I am so glad a fellow early educator shared this book with me.

Teachers should appreciate this book

This simple story begins with a huge elephant throwing a smaller hippo out of the pond. The hippo then finds an animal smaller than him to bully. And it continues down the line with a variety of animals picking on smaller animals until Mama Monkey shares a little wisdom. "Jungle Bullies" offers a "pay it forward" type concept. The animals start out passing on bullying behaviors. Then they pass on how to overcome bullies. I like that the story emphasizes that you do not have to be mean to stand up to a bully. You just have to be smart and courageous - and in the end - kind and willing to share. Vincent Nguyen could not have created better animal images. They look cute and sweet when they are victims of bullies. Yet, they look a bit mean when they are bullying others. Although the illustrations are colorful, the color is muted just enough to give them the organic feel that the natural, jungle environment warrants. Teachers should appreciate this book, as the repetition and predictability in this story are perfect for teaching younger children.

Fun read with a lesson learned

This is a cute book that teaches kids about dealing with bullies in a positive way. I enjoyed the rhyme the momma monkey teaches her little monkey and that they share with all the other jungle animals. Not necessarily a realistic lesson but by giving young children more confidence and showing that an adult in the background is a good idea, this book can increase a child's self confidence when confronted with a bully. It also shows how easy it is to start picking on others once you've been picked on without really realizing that you've become a bully too.

Love this book

My youngest son LOVES this book! It's his favorite, so I splurged and bought the hardcover. It was good at telling a story about bullies before he could read.

Jungle Bullies

Our school was experiencing some bullying and exclusionary behavior at the kindergarten and 1st grade level. We got this book to read at storytime and the kids loved it. It was a great intro on this topic.
