Description

From School Library Journal YA?A fascinating glimpse into the life of the writer and artist. Over 200 reproductions of Tolkien's paintings, drawings, and sketches fill this engaging title. Basically arranged chronologically into six sections, the book explores the man's early work; visions, myths, and legends; art for children; The Hobbit; "The Lord of the Rings"; and patterns and devices. In a readable style, Hammond and Scull weave their subject's writing career with his love of art. Tolkien's use of inks, washes, watercolors, and pencil is examined. Many previously unpublished illustrations are included and preliminary sketches show how they developed. Excerpted text shows the art within the context of its completed work.?John Lawson, Fairfax County Public Library, VACopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Much has been written about Tolkien's work; Carpenter's splendid biography, Tolkien (1977), reveals fascinating insights into the man's life and books. Interestingly however, until now his art has been mostly ignored; Hammond and Scull reverse this oversight in an informative exploration that includes more than 200 reproductions of the drawings, sketches, and paintings Tolkien made from his early childhood through his final years. In a loosely chronological, well-documented text, the authors discuss Tolkien's early work, the "Father Christmas" letters to his children (recently released with facsimile letters), the images made in connection with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings cycle (which, unlike his stories, received mixed reviews), and his later fascination with decorative patterns and designs. The open and inviting format and the reproductions of his art make this a Tolkien lover's dream, and the insightful text will quickly capture attention as well. Barbara Elleman Wayne G. Hammond is a librarian at the Chapin Library of Rare Books, Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts. Read more

Author and Illustrator!

J.R.R. Tolkien was a great author (millions of readers can attest to that). His talents, however, weren't confined to the written word. Professor Tolkien was also a proficient artist and illustrator. His illustrations graced the cover of each book of the "Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) trilogy (paperback) in the early 80s -- when I first read the series. I was unaware at the time that the the covers were reproductions of the author's handiwork. The art enhanced my LOTR 'experience' (for me, an '80s teen, Tolkien's books were portals to alternate realities and were not simply good reads). "J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator" does, of course, present the expected, and I daresay obligatory, snapshots of Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth. However, it isn't limited to the vast expanse of that realm. The book also provides insights into what inspired many of his other artistic endeavors and shows many of the fruits of that inspiration. Truth be told, I purchased this book primarily for the eye candy. The commentary is an added bonus -- like a colorful eye candy wrapper imprinted with ingredients. If you like Tolkien, art and escapism, this book is for you.

Came as stated

First let's start with the condition of the book.
My copy was a hardcover that had been previously used as a library book, this meant that there was some clear wear and tear from previous uses. The edges of the hardcover are worn, but the spine and pages appear to be mostly intact. One-page has a small rip about 3/4 of an inch long, which I put clear tape over to prevent further ripping. One page is bent slightly where someone may have marked the page, there is not a lot that I can do to fix that, except bend it back and leave it alone.
The dust jacket was taped to the hardcover, sine this was a library book, and the library number and location tags were also attached by tape. I was able to gently remove these tags and it looks much better. There is a stamp on the top pages of the book saying Denever Public Library; this is par for the course since it is from a library. It doesn't, in my opinion distract from the book, since how often are you going to be looking at the top of the pages.
All in all the book came in a better condition than was stated by the seller.
Content: It's pictures largely made by Tolkien himself, combined with commentary by the two compilers of the book. If you love Tolkien for The Hobbit or LOTR then that alone is enough reason to get this book. There are however other equally interesting sketches not related to those two books.

Great Source of Information

I am an adamant fan of all Tolkien's work, and am becoming a "completionist" when it comes to his published work.

This is much more interesting than "another Tolkien book on the shelf", though - it is on our coffee table, to be constantly opened and looked through. Tolkien's art is amazing, and I love seeing how he pictured his creations. I especially love the detailed ink pen drawings.
