Features & Highlights

  • The final chapter of Jim Henson's The Creation Myths Trilogy.
  • BRIAN FROUD, legendary conceptual designer of the beloved Jim Henson fantasy film THE DARK CRYSTAL, returns to the world he helped create in this stunning conclusion of the official prequel to original movie. The world of Thra is shattered. Following the events of The Great Conjunction, the once-powerful Urskeks have been split into two separate beings: the Skeksis and the Mystics. Only Raunip and Aughra know their true origins, but they are trapped in the bowels of the world of Thra, searching for the shard of the Dark Crystal. But as the aftermath of the Great Conjunction wreaks havoc upon the Gelfling tribes, the Geflings may have no choice but to rely upon the one race offering aid: the Skeksis. The species of Thra will have to decide who they can trust if they hope to keep their world together. Written by Matthew Dow Smith (Doctor Who, X-Files) and gorgeously illustrated by Alex Sheikman (Robotika) and Lizzy John (Fraggle Rock), this third volume is the epic conclusion to the Creation Myths saga. This volume features behind the scenes photos and concept sketches from the Jim Henson Company Archives documenting how creature and puppet designs that never made it into the film were adapted and brought to life on the page.

A very disappointing conclusion

SPOILERS:
Part 1 and 2 have shown the history that led to the plot of the film. Many questions were answered, especially in Part 2. I liked it very much.
So it would be logical to assume that part 3 answered any of the remaining outstanding issues, for example. :
- Who wrote the prophecy?
- How did the Skeksis create their Garthim soldiers?
- How did the Skeksis create their crystal bats?
- How the Gelflings were enslaved?
- How were Jen and Kira saved?
- How did the Skeksis rebuilt their castle?

Instead, they dished out a story in Part 3, which actually has nothing to do with the film:
The villages of Podlings and Gelflings are being attacked by a new race, the Miners.
But even this story is unsatisfactory because many ends are open.
Also, it amazes me why the miners are depicted as giants. The original dolls were relatively small, maybe the same size as the Gelflings.

On the positive side I have to mention the coloring. The colors are very well done and add a lot to the little detailed drawings .
The background informations at the end of the book are also good, especially the 2 never before seen photos of the Miner creatures.

So, storywise this was a very disappointing conclusion.

One of the best things I've read in a while.

I you have any love in your heart for Dark Crystal, this and the previous two creation myth books are must have. They tell the tale of how the crystal was cracked and the origin of the dual beings that were split in two because of it. They also tell the story of Ogra (sp?). Brian Froud does a brilliant job of fleshing out the origin of his magical world. I would recommend these to anyone that loved the movie.

Very much worth the wait!

Absolutely fantastic piece, which we have come to expect from this series. The artwork is top notch, the writing is wonderful and the world itself that Brian Froud (and the legendary Jim Henson) has built is nothing short of brilliant. This is the 3rd (and I believe final) installment of this particular series and just like the preceding 2 volumes this book is worth every penny. There have been delays with just about each book, but the wait was always worth it. I can only hope that this is not the last release from Brian Froud and Archaia, but if it is I am thankful to at least have these 3 books.

Book came damaged...twice

Review has nothing to do with the story or artwork as I barely had a chance to glance through it. This has to do with receiving damaged items, not once, but twice. The first time there was a tear on the back cover jacket, which had been taped over into the book itself. The second one had wear spots on the front cover. Amazon won't let me replace the second one, I have to get a refund and buy it again. Probably not from Amazon, either.
