Description

“Just the sort of thing you hope will imprint on the memory screen of a young child: fresh, clear, pure, and good.” ― Commonwealth James Herriot (1916-1995) was the bestselling author of memoirs including All Creatures Great and Small , All Things Bright and Beautiful , All Things Wise and Wonderful , The Lord God Made Them All , and Every Living Thing . At age 23, Herriot qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College, and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of 50. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire (OBE). His veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England, is now tended by his son, Jim Wight. Ruth Brown illustrated James Herriot's Treasury of Inspirational Stories for Children.Peter Barrett co-illustrated James Herriot's Treasury of Inspirational Stories for Children from St. Martin's Press.

Re-release of James Herriott treasury for children

This book has beautiful pictures and is one of my favorites. All the kids I know love it. I highly recommend the book itself. However, it is a re-release of the book James Herriot's Treasury for Children. The Amazon website recommends buying the two books together, so I assumed they were different books. However, the copyright information for the Inspirational Stories book says clearly "Previously published as James Herriot's Treasury for Children ..."

Tender-hearted peak at the past

We bought this for our niece. The stories are heart-warming, but also sometimes realistically heart-breaking. I think it'll help any child develop sympathy and respect for other animals, plus city kids will get a glimpse of farm life.

We had read the comments about it being hard to read and understand, so my fiance read me a story from it before we wrapped it up and sent it out. We did get some good laughs from him trying to pronounce a few things. The problem isn't that the words are big, its that the author is doing a good job of recreating an accent and cultural slang that us americans haven't heard before. I think its probably healthy for parents and kids alike to be exposed to a different culture and way of talking. And even if you miss a few words, you'll still understand each story as a whole.

Parents should try reading Herriot's adult novels, too!

This is a wonderful book and the stories are delightful

This is a wonderful book and the stories are delightful!
Unfortunately, there is a misprint in the last chapter. The story Bony's Big Day is mixed with the last story Smudge, the Little Lost Lamb. If you purchase this book make sure to check it. By the time we realized the misprint it was too late to return it.

A Truly Wonderful Book!

I bought this book for my daughter who is a 6th grade school teacher. She has related to me how her students are enthralled with the stories and illustrations in this book. She is saving the 'Christmas Day Kitten' to read before the upcoming Christmas break. My daughter grew up hearing these stories and she was so excited to be able to read the stories to her students. A truly wonderful book!

James Herriot's story helps kids learn to read

My little Shetland sheepdog and I do Therapy Dog work. Whenever we have an older child who needs a bit of help learning to read, I pull out this treasury of James Herriot's tales. The stories are suitable for almost everybody except the youngest readers (they are a bit long for them to read, although they are very suitable for parents to read to little ones). Heart warming, well illustrated, these stories are suitable for 3rd grade level and up readers to enjoy. Adults can also enjoy these stories with their kids.
