good intro

I picked this up for my recent college grad daughter, who is learning what to do with her money now that she has some. I wanted something that provides facts without "10 ways to beat the market" type schemes, and this is exactly that.
It provides factual information without much guidance. If you want to know what a REIT is, or the difference between an ETF and a mutual fund, it's in there. This is a great first step - understanding what all the things are, before you start wading thru advice on which things you should do.

Misleading, poorly written, and very out of date

Not a good introduction to the subjects. Poorly written. Has not been consistently updated. Publication date is 2016; however, much of the information in the book is outdated -- written in 1992 (see p. 230), 1999 (see p. 22, p. 189, p. 194), or 2005. Inconsistent and haphazard descriptions. Several subjects are introduced, and then not explained (example: derivatives). The information on futures and options is misleading, muddled, and often inaccurate. The photos are meaningless, they add nothing to the explanations -- why are they included? Unfortunately, I bought this book. I could not bring myself to give it away, and inflict the shallow out-dated information on someone else; so, I ripped it up and recycled the paper.

A Better Alternative To Dummies For.... INVESTING 101: A Critical Review.

I was a business and accounting major in college and I never found a book that succinctly breaks down the fundamentals of investing like this book.

This is literally a small book. I mean only slightly bigger than my hand, but it can fit in a handbag if needed.

This book is more of a glossary about investment terms with a brief synopsis of how it works.

The book is broken down into concise subjects:

Ch. 1- Basic Economics
Ch. 2- What Are Stocks?
Ch. 3- Bonds, Mutual Funds and ETF's
Ch. 4- Styles of Investing
Ch. 5- Investing In Real Estate
Ch. 6- Currency And Commodity Trading
Ch. 7- Education And Retirement Planning
Ch. 8- Socially Responsible Investing
Ch. 9- Your Investment Portfolio
Ch. 10- Advice From The Pros

This half size book is a little more than 250 pp's but the quality of information published here is more than a volume of dense academic books.

If you're looking a simple-to-understand book on investing and the Dummies.... leaves you desiring something more, this is the book for you.

The explanations are concise without the extra verbiage and confusing terminology that you might find in a college textbook. Used alongside when reading your favorite financial publication or website, you'll be ready to try your hand at investing in no time!
