  • Daniel Liang teaches concepts of problem-solving and object-oriented programming using a fundamentals-first approach. Beginning programmers learn critical problem-solving techniques then move on to grasp the key concepts of object-oriented, GUI programming, advanced GUI and Web programming using Java. Liang approaches Java GUI programming using JavaFX, not only because JavaFX is much simpler for new Java programmers to learn and use but because it has replaced Swing as the new GUI tool for developing cross-platform-rich Internet applications on desktop computers, on hand-held devices, and on the Web. Additionally, for instructors, JavaFXprovides a better teaching tool for demonstrating object-oriented programming.

This is an excellent book on Java

This is an excellent book on Java. I was already familiar with most of the concepts, but they were solidified in this book. It's a great textbook or self-learning book.

ok - nothing revolutionary

Needed for a class, and then the instructor didn't even use the book. Covers all of the Java functionality and written like most other programming books, lots of options, features and functions covered all at once.

Worthwhile if you'll be using it for class

I do think this is a quality book but nowhere near worth the price. But that is more the fault of the college system as a whole. There are very likely books just as good if you are looking for reference but if you need it for class, you can make good use of it.

Four Stars

Easy to pick up JAVA, but why so expensive?

Decent coverage of an impressive array of topics

This book covers an incredible range of topics that will take a beginner to the next level. The one drawback is that as the book gets into more complicated stuff, the coverage can feel a little light-- but it is absolutely enough to get a foothold in advanced topics that is hard to find from other sources. Overall, this is a very well put together book.
