Description

From Booklist Long before he was one of the stars of the TV series Storm Chasers, Timmer was no stranger to the thrill and danger of storm chasing. Ever since he was in college in the late 1990s, studying meteorology, he was drawn to tornadoes, hurricanes, and other big-weather phenomena. This book, which will unavoidably remind some readers of the movie Twister, is a mixture of autobiography and edge-of-your-seat adventure. Timmer tells us with almost breathless enthusiasm about tracking Hurricane Floyd as it approached the U.S. in 1999; about following Katrina in 2005 and helping its victims in the aftermath; and about, in 2000, barely escaping a potentially lethal hailstorm. The author also takes us through the history of storm chasing, which began with a University of Oklahoma project in the early 1970s in which meteorology students filmed tornadoes to learn how they behaved. For fans of “extreme weather” adventures, this is a must-read. --David Pitt About the Author Reed Timmer is one of the most successful and daring storm chasers in the world. Not only has he intercepted over 250 tornadoes and a dozen powerful hurricanes during the last decade, Timmer is also one of the few people in the field to document both an F5 tornado (the strongest level possible) and the most devastating hurricane in U.S. history—Hurricane Katrina. He stars on one the of Discovery Channel’s most popular series, Storm Chasers (19.3 million viewers in season 2). Timmer has also appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show , CNN and been featured in documentaries and on other television shows (“When Nature Strikes,” “Full Force Nature”). Every YouTube video he posts gets hundreds of thousands of views. He will graduate with a Ph.D. in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma in 2010. Timmer is a disaster educator, and conducts storm spotter seminars for the National Weather Service, emergency managers, and the general public. He lives just outside Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Decent read

As a storm chaser myself, I decided to pick up this book before a couple long flights to Asia. The book took me approximately 5 hours to read, and chronicles how Reed transitioned from a nerdy high school science nerd to a freshman at OU in Norman with an interest in weather all the way to involvement with the media to where he is now as a tv show star.

It definitely shows his deep rooted passion for weather and science, and how he has been different from other people, meteorology students and scientists. Reed talks quite a bit about what drove his passion to storm chase, and how each event affected him.

My only real complaint is that the story definitely wound down quickly after Hurricane Katrina. Whether it was loss of interest, or intentional, it makes you wonder what's next.

Really enjoyed this book

Surprisingly well-written, "Into the Storm" was an absorbing account of a fascinating person. Can't say I'm a Timmer fan because I'm one of those who believes his extreme chasing style will one day get him and his whole crew killed, but you can't help but be intrigued by someone with that kind of passion. I appreciated the glimpse into his mind, snd I did appreciate that he lays it all out there for the world to see. He admits he's a cowboy, and cops to some of his less-than-admirable traits, something a lesser character would have been incapable of. Overall, a very informative and entertaining read that was worth the time and money I invested in it.

I really enjoyed this book!

Having a lifelong curiosity about storms and living in Tornado Alley but never having the courage to storm chase myself, this book was a fantastic read. Although Im not a huge watcher of the Storm Chasers series, I had seen an episode or two before which helped me to understand a bit of the backstory - especially in the later chapters that discuss Reed's foray into TV and his Dominator vehicle. Unlike a lot of books that discuss weather related issues, this one was much more enjoyable because of the accessable language used. Everything weather related is really broken down into very simple terms that help you to understand clearly what you need to know. I probably learned more from reading this book than I have in many years of listening to weather forecasters just because of the very clear well written explanations. It was a very readable book and covers a time period of Timmer's life from his entry into meteorology school until the success of his TV show with highlights of select storm chases spanning the duration. If you are a bit of a weather nut, I think this is well worth a read!
